The mechanisms of pretilt angle generation for a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) with negative dielectric anisotropy on the blended polyimide (PI) surface containing trifluoromethyl moiety was studied. High LC pretilt angle on the blended polymer surface with F3 was measured and the pretilt angle increased with rubbing strength. However, the low LC pretilt angle on the blended polymer surface with F1 and F2 was measured. The high LC pretilt angle generated is attributable to trifluoromethyl moiety in backbone structure on the blended PI surface. Therefore, the high pretilt angle of NLC can be achieved by using the blended polymer surface.

In this paper, we report the fabrication of high quality polymer walls by using a monomer containing fluorine (F-monomer). Polymer walls with no phase retardation were fabricated by using photo-polymerization induced anisotropic phase separation of the mixture composed of liquid crystal (LC) and F-monomer. Thanks to the immiscibility of fluoride, we could form high quality polymer walls with no light leakage. We measured electro-optic characteristics of a twisted-nematic (TN) LC cell whose polymer walls were fabricated by using the F-monomer, and the measurements were compared with that fabricated by using the monomer without fluorine.
Environmentally friendly water dispersion polyurethanes containing fluorine were prepared with a fluorinated polyol having $62\%$ of fluorine $(Fluorolink^{(R)}\;M_n\;1000)$. In order to control the fluorine contents of the synthesized polyurethanes polytetramethylene glycol (PTMG2000) and $Fluorolink^{(R)}$ were mixed at assigned ratios and reacted with isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) as a diisocyanate used. Introducing hydrophilic anion to the polymer chain was achieved by applying dimethyl propionic acid (DMPA). The ionic groups were neutralized with triethyl amine (TEA) before dispersion into water. Chain extension was executed by adding ethylene diamine at the final stage. Mechanical properties of the polymers showed that modulus increased with increasing $Fluorolink^{(R)}$ content. Surface energy values obtained from contact angle measurement decreased with increasing $Fluorolink^{(R)}$ content up to $20\%$. We expect that the synthesized polyurethanes present reliable effect from the fluorine atoms incorporated even at a small amount of $Fluorolink^{(R)}$.

The influence of the reactant composition on the surface free energy and on the dispersity in water was investigated by using the fluorine-containing water-soluble polyurethane synthesized with the fluorine-containing diol and hydrophilic diol. The diol donating ionic characteristics was more effective than polyol, and stable emulsion with the diameter of 610~310 nm was obtained in the range of 0.3~0.7 molar ratio of the diol to polyol. According to the increment of fluorine-containing compound up to 10 wt %, the surface free energy of polyurethane was dramatically decreased from 22.3 to 12.6 dyn/cm, and the diameter of water dispersed polyurethane increased from 380 to 860 nm due to the strong interaction between polymer molecules because fluorine segments are arranged on the surface of molecules. The macromonomer with perfluoroalkyl group was more effective in complement of the weak point of water-soluble polyurethane, which is a decrease of hydrophobicity, because of strong hydrophobicity.
Manufacturing process of OLED contains adsorption-desorption process of glass substrate. There are several adsorption methods of glass substrate such as atmospheric pressure, vacuum and electrostatic adsorption. However, these methods are very complex to connect system. Therefore, the adsorption method using silicone rubber based sticking chuck was proposed in this study. Three types of silicone rubbers having 0, 19.3 and 32.2 wt% of fluorine were used and their mechanical properties, surface energies and adsorption properties were examined. According to the results ${\sigma}_{300}$ and hardness increased with increasing fluorine contents, but elongation was decreased. Also, fluorosilicone rubber containing 32.2 wt% of fluorine showed the lowest surface tension, among three types of rubber and resulted in the highest initial tack with glass substrate. After the adsorption-desorption test of 300,000 cycles was performed, the adsorption force of S-1 (silicone rubber) decreased largely from 2.34 to 0.73 MPa. However, the S-3 (fluorosilicone rubber having 32.2 wt%. of fluorine) decreased only from 3.15 to 2.24 MPa. From this study, we obtained the valuable equations related to long term durability of silicone based sticking chuck. Finally the transfer of silicone rubber to glass substrate with the adsorption-desorption process was not occurred and this phenomenon was examined by UV-Visible spectroscopy.
The dielectric constants of fluorine-containing epoxy resins, 2-diglycidylether of benzotrifluoride(FER)/4,4'-diamino-diphenyl methane (DDM) and diglycidylether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA)/DDM systems were evaluated by dielectric spectrometer. Glass transition temperature and thermal stability factors, including initial decomposed temperature, temperatures of maximum rate of degradation, and decomposition activation energy of the cured specimens were investigated by dynamic mechanical analysis and thermogravimetric analysis. For the mechanical properties of the casting specimens, the fracture toughness, flexural, and impact tests were performed, and their fractured surfaces were examined by scanning electron microscope. The dielectric constant of FER/DDM system was lower than that of commercial DGEBA/DDM system, and the mechanical properties of the cured specimens showed higher values than those of DGEBA/DDM system. This was probably due to the introduction of trifluoromethyl (CF$_3$) group into the side chain of the epoxy resins, resulting in improving the electric and mechanical properties of the epoxy cure system studied.

We have synthesized new blue light emitting random copolymers, poly(9,9'-n-dioctylfluorene-co-perfluorobenzene-1,4-diyl)s (PFFBs), via Ni(0)-mediated coupling reactions. The weight-average molecular weights ($M_w$) of the PFFB copolymers ranged from 9,000 to 15,000. The PFFB copolymers dissolved in common organic solvents such as THF and toluene. The PL emission peaks of the PFFB copolymers were at around 420, 440, and 470 nm. EL devices were fabricated in ITO/PEDOT/polymer/Ca/Al configurations using these polymers. These EL devices were found to exhibit pure blue emission with approximate CIE coordinates of (0.15, 0.11) at $100cd/m^2$. The blue emissions of these devices might be due to the restriction of the polymer chains to aggregation by introducing of the highly electronegative fluorine moieties. The maximum brightnesses of the PFFB copolymer devices ranged from 140 to $3600cd/m^2$ with maximum efficiencies from 0.2 to 0.6 cd/A. The enhanced efficiency of the PFFB (8/2) copolymer device results from the inhibition of excimer formation by the introduction of the electronegative fluorine moieties into the copolymers.
