In this study, hydrophilic coating characteristics of PVDF [poly(vinylidene fluoride)] hollow fiber membranes with flower type cross-section prepared by thermally induced phase separation were studied. The hollow fiber used in this study was provided from PureEnvitech Co. Ltd., and the hydrophilic coating experiment was performed with different concentration and number of coating of PEBAX 1657, 2533 and 3533 block copolymer solution using a dip coating method. The hydrophilic coated hollow fiber membrane was characterized to scanning microscope and contact angle measurements to determine the degree of hydrophilization. As a result of SEM characterization, it was confirmed that the thickness of the coating layer increased as the coating concentration increased and the number of coatings increased. Contact angle of surface of hollow fibers decreased as the concentration of the coating solution increased and the number of coatings increased. Gas permeance of oxygen gas was measured for the application of the hydrophilized hollow fiber to Membrane Areated Biofilm Reactor. As a result of gas permeation test, it was confirmed that gas permeance decreased with increasing coating concentration and number of coatings, and the more hydrophilized hollow fiber coated with PEBAX 1657 showed lower gas permeance than those coated with PEBAX 2533 and 3533.
We report a highly selective and sensitive 200 MHz Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) sensor that can detect cyanide ion in aqueous solution using surface immobilized thioester molecules in combination with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). To construct the sensor device, a monolayer of thioester compound was immobilized on the SAW sensor surface. At the sensor surface, hydrolysis of thioester group by nucleophilic addition of cyanide occurred and the resulting free thiol unit bound to AuNP to form thiol-AuNP conjugate. For the signal enhancement, gold staining signal amplification process was introduced subsequently with gold (III) chloride trihydrate and reducing agent, hydroxylamine hydrochloride. The SAW sensor showed a detection ability of $17.7{\mu}M$ for cyanide in aqueous solution and demonstrated a saturation behavior between the frequency shift and the concentration of cyanide ion. On the other hand, our SAW sensor had no activities for other anions such as fluoride ion, acetate ion and sulfate ion, moreover, no significant interference observed by other anions. Finally, all the experiments were carried out in-house developed sensor and fluidics modules to obtain highly reproducible results.

Vanadium oxide based materials have been studied as novel negative electrode materials in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) because of their high specific capacity. In this study, potassium metavanadate ($KVO_3$) was synthesized and its electrochemical properties are evaluated as a negative electrode materials. The aqueous solution of $NH_4VO_3$ is mixed with a stoichiometric amount of KOH. The solution is boiled to remove $NH_3$ gas and dried to obtain a precipitate. The obtained $KVO_3$ powders are heat-treated at 300 and $500^{\circ}C$ for 8 h in air. As the heat treatment temperature increases, the initial reversible capacity decreases, but the cycle performance and Coulombic efficiency are improved slightly. On the contrary, the electrochemical performances of the $KVO_3$ electrodes are greatly improved when a polyacrylic acid (PAA) as binder was used instead of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and a fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) was used as electrolyte additive. The initial reversible capacity of the $KVO_3$ is 1169 mAh/g and the Coulombic efficiency is improved to 76.3% with moderate cycle performance. The $KVO_3$ has the potential as a novel high-capacity negative electrode materials.

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membrane has a good membrane durability because of its high mechanical resistance, thermal and chemical stability. However, the strong hydrophobic property of PVDF membrane can induce a low water permeability and easy fouling by proteins and organic matters. In order to improve the anti-fouling properties of PVDF membrane, the PVDF mixed matrix asymmetric membranes impregnated with biofunctional material 𝛽-cyclodextrin (𝛽-CD) in the membrane structure were prepared by phase inversion method. The membrane filtration experiments of pure water and BSA solution were performed using the PVDF/𝛽-CD mixed matrix asymmetric membranes prepared according to the 𝛽-CD contents. The experiments showed that the introduction of 𝛽-CD into the PVDF polymer matrix contributed to increase in the hydrophilic property of the PVDF membranes, and this led to the reduction of contact angles and improvement of anti-fouling properties. The PVDF/𝛽-CD membrane which was prepared using the dope solution with a 2 wt% 𝛽-CD content represented 64 L/m2·h of pure water flux, 95% of BSA rejection and maximum 80% of flux enhancements compared to flux results of the pristine PVDF membrane.
The purpose of this study is to compare and to evaluate the effects of the degree of saturation on the progression of artificial root caries lesion. A total of 8 human premolars without any defects and cracks selected and the cementum were removed and the teeth were cleaned with ultrasonic device and pumice without fluoride. Each tooth was sectioned into 6 pieces and they were ground with #800 sandpaper until they had a thickness of 200pm. Specimens were applied with nail vanish except for the 2-3 mm window area after application of bonding agent. Under the constant pH, the specimens were divided into 6 groups (degree of saturation: 0.1415, 0.1503, 0.1597, 0.1676, 0.1771. 0.1977). Each group was immersed in acid buffer solution for 1. 2, 3, 5 days under controlled temperature ($25^{\circ}C$) and imbibed in water and examined using the polarizing microscope. The results were as follows 1. Although the degree of saturation of demineralization solution decreased, the depth of penetration in the dentin was constant. 2. Erosion was observed on the surface of all the teeth in the group I, II. In the group III, IV, V, surfaces were not changed. The teeth in the group VI showed the more mineralized surface but not the shape of the dentinal tubules distinctively. 3. In all groups, the lesion progressed rapidly at the first day of the experiment, but increased gradually as time elapsed.
Hexavalent chromium may reduce on polyvinyl chloride (PVC) filter during sampling and storage of sample. Recently, new or modified filters for preventing Cr(VI) from the reduction has been introduced. Thus, this study was performed to compare the reduction behaviors of Cr(VI) on several sampling filters and to find the most appropriate filter for airborne Cr(VI) sampling in plating operation. The results were as follows. 1. There were statistically significant differences among PVC, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). glass fiber (GF) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) filters in recovery rates of spiked Cr(VI) samples by storage time(p<0.05). There was no significant difference between PVC and PTFE filters(p>0.05). The PVC and PTFE filters showed higher recoveries than GF and PVDF filters(p<0.05). 2. The quartz fiber(QF) filter treated with an alkali solution(2% NaOH/3% Na$_2$CO$_3$, 1% NaOH) showed a significantly higher recovery of Cr(VI) by storage time than other filters(GF and QF filter)(p<0.05). There was no difference in recovery of Cr(VI) between alkali-treated and untreated GF it filters(p>0.05). But the QF filters treated with two alkali solution showed a significantly higher recovery than the untreated QF filter(p<0.05). There was no significant difference in recovery of Cr(VI) between QF filters treated with 1% NaOH and 2% NaOH/3% Na$_2$CO$_3$(p>0.05). In conclusion, treatment of QF fillers with alkali solution was most effective in protecting from the reduction of Cr(VI).
A novel hydrophilic poly (vinylidene fluoride)/poly (p-phenylene terephthalamide) (PVDF/PPTA) blend membrane was prepared by in situ polycondensation of p-phenylene diamine (PPD) and terephthaloyl chloride (TPC) in PVDF solution with subsequent nonsolvent induced phase separation (NIPS) process. For comparison, conventional solution blend membrane was prepared directly by adding PVDF powder into PPTA polycondensation solution. Blend membranes were characterized by means of viscometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM). The effects of different blending methods on membrane performance including water contact angle (WCA), mechanical strength, anti-fouling and anti-compression properties were investigated and compared. Stronger interactions between PVDF and PPTA in in situ blend membranes were verified by viscosity and XPS analysis. The incorporation of PPTA accelerated the demixing rate and caused the formation of a more porous structure in blend membranes. In situ blend membranes exhibited better hydrophilicity and higher tensile strength. The optimal values of WCA and tensile strength were $65^{\circ}$ and 34.1 MPa, which were reduced by 26.1% and increased by 26.3% compared with pure PVDF membrane. Additionally, antifouling properties of in situ blend membranes were greatly improved than pure PVDF membrane with an increasing of flux recovery ratio by 25%. Excellent anti-compression properties were obtained in in situ blend membranes with a stable pore morphology. The correlations among membrane formation mechanism, structure and performance were also discussed.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of fluoride releasing orthodontic sealants, light-cured (Group L1&L2) and self-cured (Group S1&S2) $FluoroBond^{\circledR}$, on enamel microhardness under artificial carious solution in vitro.112 extracted human premolar teeth were collected for experiments and divided into seven groups. A Tukon microhardness tester equipped with a Knoop diamond indenter was employed to determine microhardness. Tukon 23 program converted the number of microhardness into KHN (Knoop hardness number). The results were as follows: 1. The microhardness of enamel depth of all groups were the least at the depth of $50{\mu}m$ and that of all groups except L2 group, the greatest at the depth of $200{\mu}m$, were the greatest at the depth of $300{\mu}m$. And as the enamel depth of all groups except L2 and S2 group increased, the microhardness value also increased. 2. There was a little preventive effect in enamel decalcification both light-and self-cured orthodontic sealant groups, but had no statistical significance between the groups(p>0.05). 3. Light-cured orthodontic sealant groups had a progressive inhibiting effect in enamel decalcification at the depth of $100{\mu}m,150{\mu}m,\;and\;200{\mu}m$ (p<0.05). 4. Self-cured orthodontic sealant groups had a progressive inhibiting effect in enamel decalcification at the depth of $150{\mu}m$ (p<0.05). 5. There was no difference of the anti-enamel demineralization effect between light- and self-cured orthodontic sealant groups (p>0.05).
