Fluorescence Sensing Properties of 2-(2'-Hydroxyphenyl)quinoline and Derivatives

  • Novel chemosensors based on 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)quinoline were prepared and evaluated for sensing metal cations. The photophysical properties of chemosensors 1-3 were examined and their ion-selectivity was evaluated by measuring their fluorescent emission responses to alkali, alkaline earth, and transition metal ions. Chemosensors 1, 2 and 3 show ratiometric and enhanced fluorescence changes with transitional metals that are efficient fluorescence quenchers, especially 3 has a high binding constant with $Hg^{+2}$ in $CH_3CN$.

  • In this study, we synthesized fluorescent sensors from rhodamine 6G derivatives and hydroxy coumarin. The synthetic routes to the rhodamine 6G derivatives containing hydroxy coumarin are shown in Fig. 1. Two derivatives were synthesized through Schiff base reactions. The structures of the new compounds were confirmed by melting point, $^1H$-NMR, and GC-MS analyses. The compounds were found to selectively bind to tin ($Sn^{2+}$) ion by fluorescence titration using various metal cations. Longer carbon chains gave more sensitivity. $Sn^{2+}$ ions exhibited the strongest fluorescence among the nime ions. The binding analysis using Job plots suggested that compounds form 1:1 complexes with the $Sn^{2+}$ ions.

Fluorescent Properties of Daehwangjam, Golden Silk, and Juhwangjam and Their Diminishing upon HCl Vapor Exposure

  • For over five millennia, humans have benefited from the valuable byproducts of Bombyx mori silkworms nourished on mulberry leaves and a multitude of potential applications remains available due to the diverse array of silkworm varieties. In this work, we discuss the utilization of Daehwangjam (DHJ), golden silk (GS), and Juhwangjam (JHJ), distinctive colored silks found in Korea, as chemosensors. These novel silks emit fluorescence under external stimuli and show a diminishing fluorescence intensity when exposed to HCl vapor. The considerable surface-to-volume ratio of these cocoons allows for the identification of 5 ppm, 300 ppm, and 3000 ppm HCl vapors through decreased fluorescence intensity. The results show the suitability of natural DHJ, GS, and JHJ for applications in biosensing applications.

효율적인 수은이온 검출을 위한 피렌-보론산 기반의 형광센서 개발 (A Pyrenylboronic Acid-based Fluorescence Sensor for Highly Efficient Detection of Mercury(II) Ions)

  • A new chemosensor based on a self-assembled system has been devised to detect Hg2+ions efficiently. We demonstrated that the amphiphilic building blocks consisting of pyrene and boronic acid (1) aggregate in aqueous solutions and provide an outstanding sensing platform for sensitive detection. The self-assembled 1 exhibited high selectivity and sensitivity for Hg2+ion detection via fluorescence quenching, where the Hg2+ion detection ensued from a fast transmetallation of 1. The Stern-Volmer (SV) quenching constant for its fluorescence quenching by Hg2+ions was approximately 1.58 × 108 M-1. In addition, self-assembled 1 exhibited excellent sensing abilities at nano-molar concentration levels when tap water and freshwater samples were contaminated with of Hg2+ ions.

Efficient Fluorescence Quenching of tert-butyl substituted Phthalocyanines with Picric Acid

  • Two tert-butyl substituted phthalocyanines(Pcs), in metal-free and metallated forms, were synthesized and the fluorescence responses toward various nitro derivatives, including picric acid(PA), 2,4-dinitrotoluene(DNT), 1,4-dinitrobenzene(DNB), 4-nitrotoluene(NT), nitrobenzene(NB), 1,4-benzoquinone(BQ), and nitromethane(NM) were investigated. Among the various nitro derivatives, current Pc derivatives exhibited efficient and exclusive fluorescence quenching in the presence of picric acid, which was readily observed by a naked eye. Quenching efficiency was estimated by the Stern-Volmer relationship, in which quenching constant, KSV, was calculated to be in the range of $10^4M^{-1}$. It was also found out that the aggregational behaviors of these Pcs are heavily dependent on the nature of solvent systems, subsequently affecting the quenching efficiency.

Hg2+-Selective Chemosensor Derived from 8-Hydroxyquinoline Having Benzothiazole Function in Aqueous Environment

  • Newly synthesized 8-hydroxyquinoline based benzothiazole derivative 2 showed a distinctive $Hg^{2+}$-selectivity over other transition metal ions in aqueous solution. The fluorescence emission at 455 nm of 2 was completely quenched upon interaction with $Hg^{2+}$ ions in dioxane-$H_2O$ system (9 : 1, v/v). The selectivity was decreased in the order of $Hg^{2+}\;>>\;Cu^{2+}\;>\;Cd^{2+}\;>\;Pb^{2+}\;{\thickapprox}\;Zn^{2+}\;{\thickapprox}\;Ni^{2+},\;and\;Hg^{2+}$ concentration dependent fluorescence quenching profile was observed in the presence of common interfering metal ions as background. The fluorescence behavior of 2 suggests that the prepared compound could be used as a fluorescent signaling subunit for the construction of new $Hg^{2+}$-sensitive ON-OFF type supramolecular switching systems.

  • A colorimetric chemosensors $Sn^{2+}$ have been designed and synthesized by three steps. The spirolactam ring-opening process of rhodamine B is one of the most useful mechanisms for controlling fluorescence properties. Herein, new fluorescent chemosensors 1 and 2 based on rhodamine B containing phenothiazine derivertive were synthesized. They exhibit selective fluorescence enhancement behaviour in the presence of $Sn^{2+}$ ion. Complexation between these compounds and the metal cations were confirmed through continuous variation method. It is observed that compounds 1, 2, and $Sn^{2+}$ ion are complexed by 1:1 formation. Especially the proposed compounds 1 and 2 exhibit quick, simple and facile synthetic route.
