  • The objective of the present study were to evaluate nitrification characteristics and determine optimum treatment conditions of three phase fluidized bed reactor for recycling water treatment of aquaculture. When the loading rates were 2.739-0.086kg $COD/m^3/day$ and 1.575-0.128kg $NH_4\;^+-N/m^3/day$, COD and ammonia removal efficiencies were $56.3-94.7\%\;and\; 67.392.6\%$, respectively. The maximum removal rates of COD and ammonia were 1200mg/l/day and 488mg/l/day, respectively. Ammonia removal rates were more than $90\%$ beyond 1hr HRT. The ammoniaremoval efficiency was sensitive to the variation of media concentration and air flowrate.

  • A bubbling fluidized bed reactor was used to study $CO_2$ capture from flue gas using a sodium-based dry regenerable sorbent, sorbA which was manufactured by Korea Electric Power Research Institute. A dry sorbent, sorbA, consists of $Na_2CO_3$ for absorption and supporters for mechanical strength. $CO_2$ capture was effective in the lower temperature range of $50-70^{\circ}C$, while regeneration occurred in the range of $120-300^{\circ}C$. To increase initial $CO_2$ removal, some amount of steam was absorbed in the sorbents before injecting simulated flue gas. It was possible to remove most $CO_2$ for 1-2 minutes at $50^{\circ}C$ and residence time of 2 seconds with steam pretreatment. Little or no reduction in initial reaction rate and capture capacity was observed in multicycle tests. The carbonated and regenerated sorbent samples were analyzed by NMR to confirm the extent of reaction. The results obtained in this study can be used as basic data for the scale-up design and operation of the $CO_2$ capture process with two fluidized bed reactors.

  • This review focused carbon-free hydrogen productions from ammonia decomposition including inorganic membranes, catalysts and the presently studied reactor configurations. It also contains general information about hydrogen productions from hydrocarbons as hydrogen carriers. A Pd-based membrane (e.g. a porous ceramic or porous metallic support with a thin selective layer of Pd alloy) shows its efficiency to produce the high purity hydrogen. Ru-based catalysts consisted of Ru, support, and promoter are the efficient catalysts for ammonia decomposition. Packed bed membrane reactor (PBMR), Fluidized bed membrane reactor (FBMR), and membrane micro-reactor have been studied mainly for the optimization and the improvement of mass transfer limitation. Various types of reactors, which contain various combinations of hydrogen-selective membranes (i.e. Pd-based membranes) and catalysts (i.e. Ru-based catalysts) including catalytic membrane reactor, have been studied for carbon-free hydrogen production to achieve high ammonia conversion and high hydrogen flux and purity.

  • Simulated Moving Bed(SMB) process consists of multiple chromatographic columns, which are usually partitioned into four zones. Such a process characteristic allows a continuous binary separations those are impracticable in conventional batch chromatographic processes. Compared with batch chromatography, SMB has advantages of continuity, high purity and productivity. Various researches have been reported for the integration of reaction and recovery during process operation on the purpose of economics and effectiveness. Simulated Moving Bed Reactor(SMBR) is introduced to combine SMB as a continuous separation process and reactor. Several cases of SMBR have been reported for diverse reactions with catalytic, enzymatic and chemical reaction on ion exchange resin as main streams. With an early type of fixed bed using catalyst, SMBR has been developed as SMB using fluidized enzyme, SMB with immobilized enzyme and SMB with discrete reaction region. For simple modeling and optimization of SMBR, a method considering convection only is possible. A complex method considering axial dispersion and mass transfer resistance is needed to explain the real behavior of solutes in SMBR. By combining reaction and separation, SMBR has benefits of lower installation cost by minimizing equipment use, higher purity and yield by avoiding the equilibrium restriction in case of reversible reaction.

  • Devolatilization is an important mechanism in the gasification and pyrolysis of woody biomass, and has to be accordingly considered in designing a gasifier. In order to describe the devolatilization process of wood particle, there have been proposed a number of empirical correlations based on experimental data. However, the correlations are limited to apply for various reaction conditions due to the complex nature of wood devolatilization. In this study, a simple model was developed for predicting the devolatilization of a wood particle in a fluidized bed reactor. The model considered the drying, shrinkage and heat generation of intra-particle for a spherical biomass. The influence of various parameters such as size, initial moisture content, heat transfer coefficient, kinetic model and temperature, was investigated. The devolatilization time linearly increased with increasing initial moisture content and size of a wood particle, whereas decreases with reaction temperature. There is no significant change of results when the external heat transfer coefficient is over 300 $W/m^2K$, and smaller particles are more sensitive to the outer heat transfer coefficient. Predicted results from the model show a similar tendency with the experimental data from literatures within a deviation of 10%.

  • Biomass has been concerned as one of the alternative energy resources because it is renewable, abundant worldwide, eco-friendly, and carbon neutral. Quercus variabilis has been studied to understand pyrolysis reaction characteristics, and to evaluate the efficiency of bio-energy production from fast pyrolysis. Quercus variabilis were fast pyrolyzed in a bubbling fluidized bed reactor at various reaction conditions. The effects of pyrolysis temperature between $400^{\circ}C$ and $550^{\circ}C$ on product yields were investigated. The yield of bio-oil was changed between 36.98 wt% and 39.14 wt%, and those of gas yield was 33.40 and 36.96 wt% with increasing reaction temperature. The higher heating value (HHV) of bio-oil at $500^{\circ}C$ ($3.0{\times}U_{mf}$) was 20.18 MJ/kg. The gas compositions were similar for all reaction conditions such as CO, $CO_2$ and $CH_4$, and $CO_2$ selectivity was the highest (37.16~50.94 mol%). The bio-oil has high selectivities for furfural, phenol and their derivatives such as 1-hydroxy-2-propanone, 2-methoxy-phenol, 1,2-benzendiol, 2,6-dimethoxy-phenol.

  • In this study, fluidized-bed pyrolysis has been conducted in order to recover the bitumen contained in the oil sand. Canada Alberta oil sand contains 11.9% of bitumen and the bitumen-derived heavy oil produced in fluidizedbed tends to be upgraded relative to the bitumen. The continuous operation has been performed using $N_2$ as a fluidization gas at 1 atm and $500^{\circ}C$ in a reactor of 170 cm height. The results showed 87.76% of bitumen conversion, where liquid products are 74.45% and gas products are 13.31%. $H_2$, $O_2$, CO, $CO_2$, $CH_4$, and NO and $C_1{\sim}C_4$ hydrocarbons in the gas products were analyzed by on-line gas analyzer and gas chromatography, respectively. The pyrolysis oil was analyzed by using proximate analysis, heavy metal analysis, SIMDIS, asphaltenes, and heating value. By SIMDIS analysis, naphtha was 11.50%, middle distillation was 44.83% and heavy oil was 43.66%. It was obvious that the pyrolysis oil was upgraded compared with bitumens.

  • In this research, C/SiC composites, i.e. activated carbon coated with SiC obtained from dichlorodimethylsilane(DDS) and hydrogen, have been made by chemical vapor infiltration(CVI) in a fluidized bed reactor. Activated carbons of sizes of 4~12, 12~20, and 20~40 mesh were used. After deposition the surface area, the amount and the shape of deposit of each sample were observed at different concentrations of reactant DDS, sizes of activated carbon, reaction pressures and reaction times. The experimental results showed that uniform deposition in the pores of sample was obtained at a lower concentration of DDS and a lower pressure. Additionally, from the observation that the pore diameter and the surface area have minimum values at a certain time of deposition, it was known that deposition occurred inside of the pore at first and then on the outside of particle. Small particles of SiC were deposited uniformly on the surface of activated carbon at lower DDS concentrations and lower reaction pressures. The results were confirmed by SEM, TGA, the pore size distribution analyzer and BET.

  • Effects of multiple-cycle operation and $SO_2$ concentration on $CO_2$ capture characteristics of three limestones were investigated in a fluidized bed reactor. For each of these sorbents, the measured $CO_2$ capture capacity decreased as the number of cycles increased and as the $SO_2$ concentration increased. On the other hand, the $SO_2$ capture increased with the increased number of cycles and the $SO_2$ concentration. The total calcium utilization decreased as the number of cycles increased, but the effect of $SO_2$ concentrations on the total calcium utilization depended on the type of limestone. For Strassburg limestone, the total calcium utillization decreased with increasing $SO_2$ concentration. However, for Luscar and Danyang limestones, the total calcium utilization was almost independent of $SO_2$ concentration for the range investigated. The results showed that $SO_2$ in flue gas reduced the $CO_2$ capture capacity of limestone and that the sulfation pattern affected the $CO_2$ capture capacity.
