A Study on the Characteristic of Gas Pore Formation in Lost Foam Casting of Mg alloy;Comparison with Al alloy (마그네슘 합금의 소실모형주조 시 기포형성 특성에 관한 연구;알루미늄 합금과 비교)

  • The pore formation characteristic of Mg alloy during Lost Foam Casting(LFC) was investigated with reduced pressure test and real casting, which was compared with the results of previous work for Al alloy. Cast Mg alloys in LFC had much lower porosities in comparison with those of Al alloys. Also, the proper pouring temperature gave the minimum porosity like Al alloy although it was higher than that of Al alloys due to the worse fluidity of Mg alloy. The pore formation mechanism of Mg alloy in LFC was similar to that of AI alloy but the critical temperature showing the different mechanism is higher than that of Al alloy as much as $30{\sim}50^{\circ}C$. The result that Mg alloy in LFC had the lower porosity comparing with Al alloy was due to the extra solubility of hydrogen gas although the solubility of Al alloy was easily exceeded by the external sources like pyrolyzed polystyrene products. The mold evacuation gave the lower porosity due to the removal of polystyrene pyrolysis products, and reduced shrinkage defects. Also, there was a proper evacuation pressure that gave a porosity of almost 0vol%. But much higher vacuum degree than this proper pressure caused the severe entrapment of polymer pyrolysis products that gave the large porosity.

  • To produce higher quality of titanium casting at a lower cost, the new titanium casting technology by using a permanent metal mold was developed and applied to fabricate hip joint for biomedical application. The present study was carried out to investigate the reactivity and fluidity of the Ti-6.0 wt%Al-4.0 wt%V alloy with metal mold by applying various ceramic powders coating on the mold surface. The molten titanium for manufacturing hip joint was poured into steel mold. No reaction layer was formed on the surface of specimens fabricated steel mold coated with $Y_2O_3$ powder.

  • The effects of Mg and Cu amounts on the casting characteristics and tensile property of Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys were investigated for the development of high strength aluminium alloys for gravity mold casting. Increase of copper amounts in Al-6%Zn-3%Mgy% Cu alloys resulted in reduction of the fluidity of these alloys and had little effects on the tensile property of these alloys. Increase of magnesium amounts from 1.0wt% to 3.3wt% in Al-6%Zn-x%Mg-0.5%Cu alloys resulted in reduction of the elongation of these alloys from 12% to 3% and increase of the tensile strength of these alloys from 340MPa to 450MPa, but had little effects on the fluidity of these alloys.

Effect of Sc, Sr Elements on Eutectic Mg2Si Modification and Castability of Al-4wt%Mg-0.9wt%Si-0.3wt%Mn-0.15wt%Fe Casting Alloy (주조용 Al-4wt%Mg-0.9wt%Si-0.3wt%Mn-0.15wt%Fe 합금의 공정 Mg2Si 개량과 주조특성에 미치는 Sc, Sr 첨가원소의 영향)

  • The effects of Sc and Sr elements on the modification of the eutectic $Mg_2Si$ phase and the castability were investigated in the Al-4wt%Mg-0.9wt%Si-0.3wt%Mn-0.15wt%Fe alloy. Measurements of the cooling curve and microstructure observations were performed to analyze the additional effects of Sc and Sr minor elements during the solidification process. A prominent effect found on the modification of the eutectic $Mg_2Si$ phase with additions of the Sr and Sc elements. Here, a fine eutectic $Mg_2Si$ phase and a decrease in the growth temperature of the eutectic $Mg_2Si$ phase were evident with an addition of Sc element up to 0.2 wt%. The growth temperature of the eutectic $Mg_2Si$ phase decreased and the effect on the modification of the eutectic $Mg_2Si$ phase increased with the addition of Sr element up to 0.02 wt%. The addition of 0.02wt%Sr had the strongest effect on the modification of the eutectic $Mg_2Si$ phase, and the resulting microstructure of the eutectic $Mg_2Si$ phase was found to have a fibrous morphology with a decreased aspect ratio and an increased modification ratio. Fluidity and shrinkage tests were conducted to evaluate the castability of the alloy. The addition of 0.02wt%Sr effectively increased the fluidity of the alloy, while an addition of Sc did not show any effect compared to when nothing was added. The maximum filling length was recorded for 0.01wt%TiB-0.02wt%Sr owing to the effect of the fine ${\alpha}$-Al grains. The macro-shrinkage ratio decreased, while the micro-shrinkage ratio increased with the addition of various eutectic modifiers. The highest ratio of micro-shrinkage was recorded for the 0.02wt%Sr condition. However, the total shrinkage ratio was nearly identical regardless of the amounts added in this study.

Effect of the Holding Temperature and Vacuum Pressure for the Open Cell Mg Alloy Foams

  • Metal foam has many excellent properties, such as light weight, incombustibility, good thermal insulation, sound absorption, energy absorption, and environmental friendliness. It has two types of macrostructure, a closed-cell foam with sealed pores and an open-cell foam with open pores. The open-cell foam has a complex macrostructure consisting of an interconnected network. It can be exploited as a degradable biomaterial and a heat exchanger material. In this paper, open cell Mg alloy foams have been produced by infiltrating molten Mg alloy into porous pre-forms, where granules facilitate porous material. The granules have suitable strength and excellent thermal stability. They are also inexpensive and easily move out from open-cell foamed Mg-Al alloy materials. When the melt casting process used an inert gas, the molten magnesium igniting is resolved easily. The effects of the preheating temperature of the filler particle mould, negative pressure, and granule size on the fluidity of the open cell Mg alloy foam were investigated. With the increased infiltration pressure, preheat temperature and granule sizes during casting process, the molten AZ31 alloy was high fluidity. The optimum casting temperature, preheating temperature of the filler particle mould, and negative pressure were $750^{\circ}C$, $400-500^{\circ}C$, and 5000-6000 Pa, respectively, At these conditions the AZ31 alloy had good fluidity and castability with the longest infiltration length, fewer defects, and a uniform pore structure.

Influence of Cu and Zn Contents on the Properties of Al-Fe-Cu-Mg Based Casting Alloys (Cu 및 Mg 첨가량에 따른 Al-Fe-Cu-Mg계 주조합금의 특성변화)

  • Efforts have been made to develop new silicon-free aluminum casting alloys that possess high electrical and thermal conductivity. In this research Al-Fe-Cu-Mg alloys with various Cu and Mg contents were investigated for their various properties. As the Cu or Mg content was increased, the electrical conductivity gradually decreased, while the tensile strength of the Al-Fe-Cu-Mg alloy tended to be improved. It was found that fluidity was generally inversely proportional to the Cu content, but the alloys containing 1%Mg showed considerably low fluidity, regardless of the Cu content.

A fine grain size and an increase in the crystallization temperature for the ${\alpha}-Al$ solution were evident after the addition of 0.1wt% Al-5%Ti-1%B additive. The modification effect of the eutectic $Mg_2Si$ phase with the addition of 0.05% Al-10%Sr additive was prominent. A fine eutectic $Mg_2Si$ phase and a decrease in the growth temperature of the eutectic $Mg_2Si$ phase were evident. Fluidity, shrinkage and solidification-cracking tests were conducted to evaluate the castability of the alloy. The combined addition of Al-5%Ti-1%B and Al-10%Sr additives showed the maximum filling length owing to the effect of the fine ${\alpha}-Al$ grains. The macro-shrinkage ratio increased, while the micro-shrinkage ratio decreased with the combined addition of Al-5%Ti-1%B and Al-10%Sr additives. The macro-shrinkage ratio was nearly identical, while the micro-shrinkage ratio increased with the addition of the Al-10%Sr additive. The tendency of the occurrence of solidification cracking decreased owing to the effect of the fine ${\alpha}-Al$ grains and the modification of the $Mg_2Si$ phase with the combined addition of Al-5%Ti-1%B and Al-10%Sr additives.

Microstrucual Characterization of Vacuum Gas Gas Atomized AZ31+1%MM Alloy Powders (진공가스분무한 AZ31+1%MM 합금 분말의 미세조직 특성)

  • In this study, the characteristics of gas atomized Mg-3wt%Al-1wt%Zn-1wt%MM alloy powders under vacuum condition were investigated. In spite of the low fluidity and easy oxidation of the molten magnesium, the spherical powders could be successfully produced by using a modified three pieces nozzle attached to the gas atomization unit. It was found that most of the solidified powders less than 50$\mu$m in diameter were single crystal and the solidified structure showed a typical dendritic morphology due to supercooling prior to nucleation. The secondary dendrite arm spacing decreased as the size of powders decreased. The Mg-Al-Ce intermetallic compounds with chemically stable phase were found in the interdendritic regions of $\alpha$-Mg. It is considered that formation of the chemically stable phase may possibly affect to improve the corrosion resistance. Therefore, it is expected that the materials formed of these Mg-Al-Zn-MM alloy powders shows better mechanical properties and corrosion resistance due to the structural refinement.

  • Ti-6Al-4V has low specific gravity, high corrosion resistance and superior mechanical properties but it is very difficult to control oxygen content in MIM process. It is necessary to use powders with coarse particle size to decrease oxygen content of powders, so feedstocks with poor fluidity and sintered bodies with lower density are obtained in such cases. Fine titanium hydride-dehydride powders were blended with atomized powders to accomplish higher fluidity and sintered density. Sintered bodies had higher sintered density and mechanical properties equivalent to those of wrought materials by controlling oxygen content less than 0.35mass%.

  • The characteristics of two commercial 2xxx series Al alloy powders, AMB2712 and 201AB, were evaluated and their compacting and sintering characteristics were discussed in tems of compacting pressure. The particle shapes of both two powder mixtures were irregular and their particle size distributions were broad. The compactibility of AMB2712 was superior to that of 201AB because of better fluidity. The sintered density was higher than the green density at low compacting pressure, however, it was lower than the green density when the samples were compacted at higher pressure due to the selling during sintering. The sintered density was alomost the same as the green density at the "homogeneous deformation" stage. It was observed that pores were created at the triple points due to the rapid diffusion of Cu in Al. Cu in Al.
