Finite element analysis tool was developed to analyze the casting process. Generally, casting processes consists of mold filling and solifification. In order to investigate the effects of process variables and to predict the defects, both filling and solidiffication process were simulated simultaneously. At filling process, especiallywe consider thermal coupling to investigate thermal history of material during the filling stage. And thermal condition at the final stage of filling is used as the initial conditions in a solidification process for the exact simulation of the actual casting processes. At mold filling process, Lagrangian-type finite element method with automatic remashing scheme was used to find the material flow. To avoid numerical instability in low viscous fluid, a perturbation method with artificial viscosity is adopted. At solififfication process, enthalpy-based finite element method was used to solve the heat transfer problem with phase change. And elastic stress analysis has been performed to predict the thermal residual stress. Through the FE analysis, solidiffication time, position of solidus line, liquidus line and thermal residual stress are studied. Finite element tools developed in this study will be used process design of casting process and maybe basic structure for total CAE system of castigs which will be constructed afterward.
A topological theory is introduced to extend Tsenoglou's theory to polymer blends having temporary and permanent networks composed of multicomponent polymers which have miscible and flexible chains. The topological theory may estimate the values of free elastic energy, the molecular weight between entanglements, and the equilibrium shear moduli, and it may establish more correctly the topological relations among these physical quantities. Through such introduction of the topological theory, there can be topologically analyzed the mixing law for the rubbery plateau modulus of a fluid polymer blend, and there can be considered the topological relationship to the equilibrium modulus of an interpenetrating polymer network containing trapped entanglements and dangling segments. The theoretically predictive values are compared and show good agreement with the experimental data for several miscible polymer blends.
The drop formation dynamics of a shear thinning, elastic, yield stress ($\tau_o$) fluid (Carbopol 980 (poly(acrylic acid)) dispersions) in silicone oil has been investigated in a flow-focusing microfluidic channel. The rheological character of each solution investigated varied from Netwonian-like through to highly non-Newtonian and was varied by changing the degree of neutralization along the poly (acrylic acid) backbone. We have observed that the drop size of these non-Newtonian fluids (regardless of the degree of neutralisation) showed bimodal behaviour. At first we observed increases in drop size with increasing viscosity ratio (viscosity ratio=viscosity of dispersed phase (DP)/viscosity of continuous phase (CP)) at low flowrates of the continuous phases, and thereafter, decreasing drop sizes as the flow rate of the CP increases past a critical value. Only at the onset of pinching and during the high extensional deformation during pinch-off of a drop are any differences in the non-Newtonian characteristics of these fluids, that is extents of shear thinning, elasticity and yield stress ($\tau_o$), apparent. Changes in these break-off dynamics resulted in the observed differences in the number and size distribution of secondary drops during pinch-off for both fluid classes, Newtonian-like and non-Newtonian fluids. In the case of the Newtonian-like drops, a secondary drop was generated by the onset of necking and breakup at both ends of the filament, akin to end-pinching behavior. This pinch-off behavior was observed to be unaffected by changes in viscosity ratio, over the range explored. Meanwhile, in the case of the non-Newtonian solutions, discrete differences in behaviour were observed, believed to be attributable to each of the non-Newtonian properties of shear thinning, elasticity and yield stress. The presence of a yield stress ($\tau_o$), when coupled with slow flow rates or low viscosities of the CP, reduced the drop size compared to the Newtonian-like Carbopol dispersions of much lower viscosity. The presence of shear thinning resulted in a rapid necking event post onset, a decrease in primary droplet size and, in some cases, an increase in the rate of drop production. The presence of elasticity during the extensional flow imposed by the necking event allowed for the extended maintenance of the filament, as observed previously for dilute solutions of linear polymers during drop break-up.

In this study, we proposed a pier of pontoon-type, "Very Large Floating Structure" (VLFS), with the length of 500m, breadth of 200 m and height of 2 m in Yeosu domestic port. Since this structure ought to endure wave loads for long periods at sea, it is essential to analyze the wave response characteristics. Direct-method is used to analyze the fluid-structure problem and the coupled motion of equation is used to obtain response results. The structural part is calculated by using finite element method (FEM) and the fluid part is analyzed by using boundary element method (BEM). Dynamic responses caused by the elastic deformation and rigid motion of structure are analyzed by numerical calculation. To investigate response characteristics of the pier in regular waves, several factors such as the wavelength, water depth, wave direction and flexural rigidity of structure are considered. As a result, wave response of pier changed at the point of $L/{\lambda}$ 1.5 and represented the torsional phenomenon according to the various incident waves. And the responses showed increasing tendency as the water depths increase at the incident point in case of $L/{\lambda}=8.0$ and peak point of vertical displacement amplitude moved from side to side as the flexural rigidity of structure changes.

The interaction of incident monochromatic waves with a tensioned, flexible, circular membrane submerged horizontally below free surface is investigated in the frame of three-dimensional linear hydro-elastic theory. The velocity potential is split into two parts i.e. the diffraction potential representing the scattering of incident waves by a rigid circular disk and the radiation potential describing motion induced waves by elastic responses of flexible membrane. The fluid domain is divided into three regions, and the diffraction and radiation potentials in each region are expressed by the Fourier Bessel series. The displacement of circular membrane is expanded with a set of natural functions, which satisfy the membrane equation of motion and boundary conditions. The unknown coefficients in each region are determined by applying the continuity of pressure and normal velocity at the matching boundaries. The results show that various types of wave focusing are possible by controlling the size, submergence depth, and tension of membrane.

Elastic-plastic structural analysis for regenerative cooling chamber of liquid rocket thrust chamber is performed. Uniaxial tension test is also conducted for the copper alloy in order to get material data necessary for the structure analysis. The results of uniaxial tension test reveal that copper alloy become ductile after brazing process and flow stress becomes lower as temperature becomes higher. As a result of structural analysis using the material data, the deformation of cooling channel is more increased by thermal load than by internal pressure of cooling fluid. Therefore, the results of analysis show that structural stability and cooling performance of combustion thrust chamber which is designed to endure mechanical load and minimized a channel thickness are improved by decreased thermal load as possible.
To solubilize practically insoluble biphenyl dimethyl dicarboxylate (DDB), which has been used for the treatment of chronic hepatitis as tablets or hard capsules, the solubilities of DDB in various hydrophilic, oily and hydrocarbon vehicles, and aqueous surfactant solutions were measured by high performance liquid chromatography. It was found that, among the vehicles studied, polyethylene glycol (PEG) 300 revealed the best solvency, and the solubility reached 17.6 mg/ml at 37$^{\circ}C$. The addition of glycyrrhizic acid ammonium salt (GAA) to DDB-PEG 300 solution (5-20 mg/g) inhibited the formation of precipitates, and at the concentration of 10 mg/g, any precipitaction was not observed even after 2 years at 4$^{\circ}C$. Furthermore, GAA markedly enhanced the permeation of DDB through the rabbit duodenal mucosa in a concentration dependent manner. The addition of copolyvidone (ca. 1.0%) to DDB-GAA-PEG 300 system (1 : 0.5 97.5 w/w) was most effective in preventing the considerable precipitation of DDB-PEG 300 solution (7.5 mg/750 mg) when mixed with water of 300-900 ml at 37$^{\circ}C$. GAA showed a synergistic effect in the prevention of precipitate formation. This finding suggests that this DDB formulation may form less precipitation when DDB soft capsules disintegrate and diffuse into the gastrointestinal fluid, resulting in improving the bioavailability Dissolution rate of DDB (7.5 mg) from sort elastic capsules of DDB-GAA-PEG 300 system was rapid. The supersaturation state was maintained for 2 hr at the concentration of 7.35$\pm$3.3 mg in 900 ml of water without precipitation. The total amount of DDB dissolved from this new formulation was 5.3 and 6.1 times higher, when compared to marketed DDB tablets (25 mg) and capsules (7.5 mg), respectively.

Analytical study based on linear fracture mechanics was conducted on propagation behavior of inclined surface crack in semi-infinite elastic body. The analytical model was assumed to be inclined surface crack under plane strain condition upon which Hertzian stress was superimposed. Supposing continuous distribution of dislocation and applying Erdogan-Gupta's method to this crack problem, the stress intensity factors $K_{I}$ and $K_{II}$) at the crack-tip were obtained for various Hertzian contact positions. Analytic results have shown that driving force for crack growth is $K_{I}$ for non-lubricated condition and $K_{II}$ for fluid and boundary lubricated condition. The coefficient of friction at the hertzian contact and crack surfaces plays an important role in predicting the direction of crack propagation. It is also found that the maximum effective stress intensity factor exists at cracks of a certain specific length depending on lubricated condition.ion.n.
Estimating fatigue damage is a very important issue in the design of ships. The springing and whipping response, which is the hydro-elastic response of the ship, can increase the fatigue damage of the ship. So, these phenomena should be considered in the design stage. However, the current studies on the the application of springing and whipping responses at the design stage are not sufficient. So, in this study, a prediction method was developed using fluid-structural interaction analysis to assess of the fatigue damage induced by springing and whipping. The stress transfer function (Stress RAO) was obtained by using the 3D FE model in the frequency domain, and the fatigue damage, including linear springing, was estimated by using the wide band damage model. We also used the 1D beam model to develop a method to estimate the fatigue damage, including nonlinear springing and whipping by the vertical bending moment in the short-term sea state. This method can be applied to structural members where fatigue strength is weak to vertical bending moments, such as longitudinal stiffeners. The methodology we developed was applied to 325K VLOC, and we analyzed the effect of the springing and whipping phenomena on the existing design.
Wave-induced response, liquefaction and stability of unsaturated seabed are studied. The unsaturated seabed is modeled as a fluid-filled polo-elastic medium. The coupled process of fluid flow and the deformation of soil skeleton is formulated in the framework of Biot's theory. The resulting governing equations are solved using a semi-analytical method to evaluate the stresses and pore water pressure of unsaturated and multi-layered seabed. The semi-analytical method can be applied to calculate a pore pressure and the stresses of in anisotropic inhomogeneous seabed. The results indicate that the degree of saturation influences mostly on the magnitudes of a pore pressure and the stresses of unsaturated and multi-layed seabed. Based on the pore pressure and stresses in seabed, the analysis on the possibilities of liquefaction and shear failure was performed. The results show that the maximum depth of shear failure occurrence is deeper than the maximum liquefaction depth.
