A program code was developed to calculate block hydraulic conductivity of the 2-D DFN(discrete fracture network) system based on equivalent pipe network, and implemented to examine the effect of joint orientation distribution on the hydraulic characteristics of fractured rock masses through numerical experiments. A rock block of size $32m{\times}32m$ was used to generate the DFN systems using two joint sets with fixed input parameters of joint frequency and gamma distributed joint size, and various normal distributed joint trend. DFN blocks of size $20m{\times}20m$ were selected from center of the $32m{\times}32m$ blocks to avoid boundary effect. Twelve fluid flow directions were chosen every $30^{\circ}$ starting at $0^{\circ}$. The directional block conductivity including the theoretical block conductivity, principal conductivity tensor and average block conductivity were estimated for generated 180 2-D DFN blocks. The effect of joint orientation distribution on block hydraulic conductivity and chance for the equivalent continuum behavior of the 2-D DFN system were found to increase with the decrease of mean intersection angle of the two joint sets. The effect of variability of joint orientation on block hydraulic conductivity could not be ignored for the DFN having low intersection angle between two joint sets.

In the design conditions of some research reactors, the siphon phenomenon can cause continuous efflux of water during pipe rupture. A siphon breaker is a safety device that can prevent water efflux effectively. However, the analysis of the siphon breaking is complicated because many variables must be included in the calculation process. For this reason, a simulation program was developed with a user-friendly GUI to analyze the siphon breaking easily. The program was developed by MFC programming using Visual Studio 2012 in Windows 8. After saving the input parameters from a user, the program proceeds with three steps of calculation using fluid mechanics formulas. Bernoulli's equation is used to calculate the velocity, quantity, water level, undershooting, pressure, loss coefficient, and factors related to the two-phase flow. The Chisholm model is used to predict the results from a real-scale experiment. The simulation results are shown in a graph, through which a user can examine the total breaking situation. It is also possible to save all of the resulting data. The program allows a user to easily confirm the status of the siphon breaking and would be helpful in the design of siphon breakers.
This is an explicit-Implicit, finite element analysis for linear as well as nonlinear hygrothermal stress problems. Additional features, such as moisture diffusion equation, crack element and virtual crack extension(VCE ) method for evaluating J-integral are implemented in this program. The Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics(LEFM) Theory is employed to estimate the crack driving force under the transient condition for and existing crack. Pores in materials are assumed to be saturated with moisture in the liquid form at the room temperature, which may vaporize as the temperature increases. The vaporization effects on the crack driving force are also studied. The Ideal gas equation is employed to estimate the thermodynamic pressure due to vaporization at each time step after solving basic nodal values. A set of field equations governing the time dependent response of porous media are derived from balance laws based on the mixture theory Darcy's law Is assumed for the fluid flow through the porous media. Perzyna's viscoplastic model incorporating the Von-Mises yield criterion are implemented. The Green-Naghdi stress rate is used for the invariant of stress tensor under superposed rigid body motion. Isotropic elements are used for the spatial discretization and an iterative scheme based on the full newton-Raphson method is used for solving the nonlinear governing equations.
Waxy barley brans were collected during the pearling process. The extraction of $\beta$-glucan from barley bran was effected by the extraction conditions. The $\beta$-glucan content increased with temperature, but not with pH. The highest yield, 6.5%, was achieved at pH 7.0 and 55$^{\circ}C$. At pH 10 and 45$^{\circ}C$, 48.5% of the $\beta$-glucan in barley bran was recovered in the gum product, with 54.6% purity. The protein and starch contaminations were high, reaching 13.6 and 23.7%, respectively. The $\beta$-glucan content was greatest in the subaleurone and aleurone regions (bran fractions 1, 2, 3 and 4), and declined considerably toward the inner layers. A monosaccharide analysis of the purified, $\beta$-glucan, from bran fractions 1, 2, 3 and 4, indicated that glucose constituted the majority of the gum. The small amounts of the arabinose and xylose found in the gum may indicate the presence of arabinoxylans as minor constituents. The molecular weights of the $\beta$-glucans isolated from bran fractions 1,2 and 3 were found to be 4.09${\times}$10$^{5}$ ∼-4.41${\times}$10$^{5}$ . The major glycosidic linkages of the $\beta$-glucans demonstrated the presence of 2, 4, 6-Me-Glc and 2, 3, 6-Me-Glc. When flow behaviors of barley bran $\beta$-glucan were examined, $\beta$-glucan exhibited pseudoplastic fluid properties.

In this study, a numerical simulation was performed using commercial code Fluent(v.17.1). The underground Combined Cycle Power Plant (CCPP) was simplified to analyze the methane gas leakage with the crack size and position. In addition, extensive numerical simulations were carried out for different crack sizes from 10 mm to 20 mm. The crack position is the gas leakage, which is assumed to be near the pipe elbow and the gas turbine. A total of 4 cases were compared and analyzed. To analyze the gas leakage, the concept of the Lower Flammable Limit (LFL) was applied. The leakage distance was defined in the longitudinal direction, and the transverse direction was estimated and quantitatively analyzed. As a result, the leakage distance in the longitudinal direction varies by 52.3 % depending on the crack size at the same crack position. Moreover, the maximum difference was 34.8 % according to the crack position when the crack sizes are identical. As jet flow impacts on the obstacle and changes its direction, the recirculation flows are formed. These results are expected to provide useful data to optimize the location and number of gas detections in confined spaces, such as underground CCPP.

The combustion characteristics of anthracite, which follow a complex process with low reactivity, must be considered through the dynamic behavior of circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boilers. In this study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation was performed to analyze the combustion characteristics of anthracite in a pilot scale 0.1 MWth Oxy-fuel circulating fluidized bed (Oxy-CFB) boiler. The 0.1MWth Oxy-CFB boiler is composed of combustor (0.15 m l.D., 10 m High), cyclone, return leg, and so on. To perform CFD analysis, a 3D simulation model reactor was designed and used. The anthracite used in the experiment has an average particle size of 1,070 ㎛ and a density of 2,326 kg/m3. The flow pattern of gas-solids inside the reactor according to the change of combustion environment from air combustion to oxygen combustion was investigated. At this time, it was found that the temperature distribution in air combustion and oxygen combustion showed a similar pattern, but the pressure distribution was lower in oxygen combustion. addition, since it has a higher CO2 concentration in oxygen combustion than in air combustion, it can be expected that carbon dioxide capture will take place actively. As a result, it was confirmed that this study can contribute to the optimized design and operation of a circulating fluidized bed reactor using anthracite.

The structural integrity of a surface metal coating was evaluated through numerical results to improve the efficiency and reduce the damage caused by cavitation in ships and marine plants. The goal was to ensure structural strength and performance, even if the thickness of the wing is reduced to reduce the weight of the material and surface coating. Analytical methods were used for four models: a non-coating model, one with the same thickness after coating, one with a thickness reduction of 3% after coating, and one with thickness reduction of 5% after coating. With a thickness reduction of 5% after coating, the stress was increased to 12%, and the safety factor was 0.99%, so the structural integrity was insufficient. However, a better material or a thicker coating could allow a sufficient safety factor to be secured. The structural integrity was improved by the coating, and even when the weight was reduced up to 5%, the structural integrity could be sufficiently secured due to the coating effect.
In this study, the effects of urban redevelopment and building construction on the change of the detailed flows around the Pukyong National University (PKNU) campus located in the building-congested area was investigated using a CFD (computational fluid dynamics) model and GIS (geographic information system). For the analysis of the detailed flows before and after the constructions of the buildings around and within the campus, numerical simulations for the 16 inflow directions were performed before and after the construction. We used, as reference wind speeds at the inflow boundaries, the averaged wind speeds observed at the Gwangan light beacon (962) where there is no surrounding obstacle (i.e., building and terrain) acting as friction. We analyzed the area fractions in which wind speeds at z = 2.5 m changed after the construction for 16 inflow directions. The area fractions were relatively large in the east-south-easterly and southerly cases, because of the high-rise buildings constructed at the east and the apartment complex and the Engineering buildings constructed at the south of the PKNU campus. In the case of the easterly of which frequency is highest among the wind directions observed at the Daeyeon AWS (AWS 942) located inside the PKNU campus, the wind-speed change was not significant even after the constructions. It is shown that the building construction has affected the detailed flows around as well as even in the far downwind region of the constructed buildings. Also, it is shown that the GIS and CFD model are useful for analyzing the detailed flows in planning the urban redevelopment and/or building construction.

POGO is a dynamic axial instability phenomenon that occurs in liquid-propelled rockets. As the natural frequencies of the fuselage and those of the propellant supply system become closer, the entire system will become unstable. To predict POGO, the propellant (oxidant and fuel) tank in the first stage is modeled as a shell element, and the remaining components, the engine and the upper part, are modeled as mass-spring, and structural analysis is performed. The transmission line model is used to predict the pressure and flow perturbation of the propellant supply system. In this paper, the closed-loop transfer function is constructed by integrating the fuselage structure and fluid modeling as described above. The pogo suppressor consists of a branch pipe and an accumulator that absorbs pressure fluctuations in a passive manner and is located in the middle of the propellant supply system. The design parameters for its design optimization to suppress the decay phenomenon are set as the diameter, length of the branch pipe, and accumulator. Multiple-objective function optimization is performed by setting the energy minimization of the closed loop transfer function in terms of to the mass of the pogo suppressor and that of the propellant as the objective function.
To investigate the characteristics of detailed flows in a building-congested district, we coupled a computation fluid dynamics (CFD) model to the local data assimilation and prediction system (LDAPS), a current operational numerical weather prediction model of the Korea Meteorological Administration. For realistic numerical simulations, we used the meteorological variables such as wind speeds and directions and potential temperatures predicted by LDAPS as the initial and boundary conditions of the CFD model. We trilinearly interpolated the horizontal wind components of LDAPS to provide the initial and boudnary wind velocities to the CFD model. The trilinearly interpolated potential temperatures of LDAPS is converted to temperatures at each grid point of the CFD model. We linearly interpolated the horizontal wind components of LDAPS to provide the initial and boundary wind velocities to the CFD model. The linearly interpolated potential temperatures of LDAPS are converted to temperatures at each grid point of the CFD model. We validated the simulated wind speeds and directions against those measured at the PKNU-SONIC station. The LDAPS-CFD model reproduced similar wind directions and wind speeds measured at the PKNU-SONIC station. At 07 LST on 22 June 2020, the inflow was east-north-easterly. Flow distortion by buildings resulted in the east-south-easterly at the PKNU-SONIC station, which was the similar wind direction to the measured one. At 19 LST when the inflow was southeasterly, the LDAPS-CFD model simulated southeasterly (similar to the measured wind direction) at the PKNU-SONIC station.
