  • The objective of this work is not only to perform feasibility studies on the CFD (computational fluid dynamics) analysis for the capillary system design but also to provide an enhanced understanding of the autonomous capillary flow. The capillary flow is evaluated by means of the commercial CFD software of FLUENT, which includes the VOF (volume-of-fluid) model for multiphase flow analysis. The effect of wall adhesion at fluid interfaces in contact with rigid boundaries is considered in terms of static contact angle. Feasibility studies are first performed, including mesh-resolution influence on pressure profile, which has a sudden increase at the liquid/gas interface. Then we perform both 2D and 3D simulations and examine the transient nature of the capillary flow. Analytical solutions are also derived for simple cases and compared with numerical results. Through this work, essential information on the capillary system design is brought out. Our efforts and initial success in numerical description of the microfluidic capillary flows enhance the fundamental understanding of the autonomous capillary flow and will eventually pave the road for full-scale, computer-aided design of microfluidic networks.

  • Exhaust system is composed of several parts. Among, them , design of muffler system strongly influences on engine efficiency and noise reduction. So , through comprehension of flow characteristics inside muffler is necessary . In this study , three-dimensional steady and unsteady compressible flow analysis was performed to understand the flow characteristics, pressure loss and amplitude variation of pulsating pressure. The computational grid generation was carried out using commercial preprocessor ICEM CFD/CAE. And the three-dimensional fluid motion inside the muffler was analyzed by STAR-CD, the computational fluid dynamics code. RNG k-$\varepsilon$ tubulence model was applied to consider the complexity of the geometry and fluid motion. The steady and unsteady flow field inside muffler such as velocity distribution, pulsating pressure and pressure loss was examined. In case of unsteady state analysis, velocity of inlet region was converted from measured pulsating pressure. Experimental measurement of pressure and temperature was carried out to provide the boundary and initial condition for computational study under three engine operating conditions. As a result of this study, we could identify the flow characteristics inside the muffler and obtain the pressure loss, amplitude variation of pulsating exhaust gas.

  • This study deals with fluid flow and heat transfer around a module cooled by forced air flow generated by a piezoelectric(PZT) fan in an enclosure. The fluid flows were generated by a flexible PZT fan which deflects inside a fluid transport system of comparatively simple structure mounted on a PCB in an enclosure($270\times260\times90mm^3$). Input voltages of 30V and 40V, and a resonance frequency of 28Hz were used to vibrate the cooling fan. Input power to the module was 4W. The height in an enclosure was changed 23$\sim$43mm. The fluid flow around the module was visualized by using PIV system. The temperature distributions around a heated module were visualized by using liquid crystal film. As the height in an enclosure and the input voltage of PZT fan increased, the cooling effect of module using a PZT fan increased. We found that the flow type was T- or Y-shape and the cooling effect was increased by the wake generated by a PZT fan.

  • The flow characteristics under recirculation cool vent mode is numerically studied using commercial fluid dynamic code(CFX). For the reliable analysis, real vehicle and human FE model is employed in grid generation process. The geometrical location and shape of panel vent, and exhaust vent is set as that of real vehicle model. The flowrate of the working fluid is determined as 330CMH which is equivalent to 70 percent of maximum capacity of HVAC system. The high velocity regions are formed around 4 each panel vent. Because of the non-symmetrically located exhaust, non-uniform flow and partial backflow near the door trim is observed. Streaklines start from each panel vent show the flow pattern of the airflow in the passenger's compartment very well.

  • Cross flow fan system is widely used for various applications, especially for the air-moving device of heaters, air-conditioners, and air-curtains. Although there are efforts for the optimization of cross-flow fan flow path with different methods of approach, it is still being investigated by many researchers through experimentally and/or theoretically, because the flow pattern of the cross flow fan is not stereotyped. This paper presents some results from numerical experiments for the optimization of the flow path through a cross-flow fan to be applied to indoor wall-mounted room heater. Two dimensional analysis has been applied to a specific fan system including inlet and diffuser outlet. Flow characteristics art presented and discussed for two different flow path at three different operating conditions represented by rotational speed(800, 1,000, 1,200 rpm) of the In. According to the simulated results for the specific fan system under consideration, it could be found that the flow pattern resembles each other at different rotational speed (to say from 800 rpm to 1,200 rpm) for a fixed flow path, while the secondary flows mostly absorbs the speed effects. By changing the flow path significant increase in volume flow rate is estimated upto 2.65 at the same rotational speed. According to the present experience, fan flow path design can be performed more efficiently by incorporating this type of numerical experiments combined with the model tests.

  • An automobile engine has the Positive Crankcase Ventilation system (PCV system) for preventing air pollution as the environmental problem is important In this system, a PCV valve is the most important component to control the flow rate of Blowby gas which is generated by various engine powers. But, in the working place, the design of a PCV valve is very difficult because of interaction between fluid and solid motions. In this study, we investigated fluid flow characteristics using re-meshing method of a CFD technique to simulate spool behavior. As the results, a spool is periodically oscillated with time and is largely oscillated in proportion to the differential pressure between inlet and outlet. And, although the velocity at the orifice increases with the differential pressure, the flow rate of the outlet decreases. This research may give PCV designers visual flow information to help them

  • Hydraulic valve control the pressure and the How of fluid by the hydraulic oil transfered from pump but the ER fluid consists of solid particles of micrometer in size and insulating oil so in the general hydraulic valve. We invented ER-Valve using ER fluid as working fluid. The ER fluid, working fluid of ER-Valve is a functional fluid to represent the feature of fluid according to strength of electric field. In this research we made our own 4 types of plate type ER-Valve which has same surface but different width and length and then we conducted performance test. We measured flow rate and pressure drop of fluid which is flowing in the ER-Valve according to the electric field strength to conduct this test. We modeling ER-Valve relating to ER-Valve system and yield shear stress according to the strength of electric field. We used the pressure drop according to the strength of electric field by differential pressure gauge in the our own made ER-Valve. This test reviewed experimental the special changes of ER-Fluid in the steady flow condition.

  • The purpose of this study is to visualize the characteristics of ER fluids as preceding step of developing 3 port ER valves. ER fluids are made with silicone oil and 3 weight fraction starch having hydrous particles. The flow visualization of ER fluids flow is obtained by CCD camera with changing the strength of electric field to ER fluids flow. As the strength of the electric field increases, more clusters in flow are made and these clusters are though to be the reasons of the load flow rate being increased and the outlet flow rate being decreased. The ER Valves and load and outlet flow rate check method are considered to be applied to the fluid power control system.

  • The developed control valves, installed on the hot water distribution manifolds for the floor heating system, consist of the balancing valves and the shut-off valves. The balancing valve was designed to improve the flow control performance and to reduce the noise emitted from the valve by modification of the general V port. The port of the shut-off valve was designed with two ceramic plates, working by rotating upper plate, to improve the duration and to reduce the noise. For the evaluation of the new valves, the flow rate was measured and noise level test was carried out. The test results showed that the error of the flow rate accuracy test for the flow balance of each manifold circuit was less than ${\pm}3%$ and the noise level was less than 35 dB(A).
