This paper presents the effects of circumferential groove on the minimum oil film thickness in engine bearings. The fluid film pressures are calculated by using the infinitely short bearing theory for the convenience of analysis. Journal locus analysis is performed by using the mobility method. A comparison of minimum oil film thickness of grooved and ungrooved bearing is presented. It is found that circumferential $360^{\circ}$ groove only reduces the absolute magnitude of the oil film thickness, but $180^{\circ}$ half groove affects the shape of film thickness curve and position of minimum oil film thickness.

The lubrication state between contacting bodies with rolling and sliding under loaded condition is generally understood by the conception shown in Figure 1. When the lubricating oil film formation between facing bodies is good enough to separate these bodies by the hydrodynamic pressure, this state is called by the expression of "hydrodynamic lubrication". The thickness of oil film is so large that the lubricating oil between facing bodies behaves as fluid and metal-to-metal contact between surface roughness asperities on facing bodies does not occur. When the oil film thickness becomes thinner or when the surface roughness height becomes larger, top of surface roughness asperities on facing bodies reaches very near to each other and there the oil or absorbed oil molecules on the surface of facing bodies behave no more as fluid. Partly metal-to-metal contact of surface roughness asperities occurs. Such lubrication state is called by the expression "mixed-lubrication". When the oil film thickness becomes more thinner or surface roughness height becomes larger, metal-tometal contact or contact via absorbed oil molecules dominate at most of the part in contact zone. Such state is called by the expression "boundary lubrication". Schematic representation of these three regimes of lubrication is shown in Figure 1.rication is shown in Figure 1.

Laidback fan shaped film-cooling hole is formulated numerically and optimized with the help of three-dimensional numerical analysis, surrogate methods, and the multi-objective evolutionary algorithm. As Pareto optimal front produces a set of optimal solutions, the trends of objective functions with design variables are predicted by hybrid multi-objective evolutionary algorithm. The problem is defined by four geometric design variables, the injection angle of the hole, the lateral expansion angle of the diffuser, the forward expansion angle of the hole, and the ratio of the length to the diameter of the hole, to maximize the film-cooling effectiveness compromising with the aerodynamic loss. The objective function values are numerically evaluated through Reynolds- averaged Navier-Stokes analysis at the designs that are selected through the Latin hypercube sampling method. Using these numerical simulation results, the Response Surface Approximation model are constructed for each objective function and a hybrid multi-objective evolutionary algorithm is applied to obtain the Pareto optimal front. The clustered points from Pareto optimal front were evaluated by flow analysis. These designs give enhanced objective function values in comparison with the experimental designs.

GaAs film growth process from trimethylgallium(TMGa) and tertiary-butylarsine(TBAs) using a horizontal MOCVD reactor was numerically studied to explain the experimental result that the decreasing surface reaction rate as the increasing partial pressure of group III species. Using the non-linear model based on the Langmuir isotherm which considers the adsorption and desorption of molecules, film deposition over the entire reactor scale was predicted by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with the aid of the parameters obtained from the selective area growth (SAG) technique. CFD Results using the non-linear surface reaction model with the parameters determined from the SAG experiments predicted too high film growth rate compared to the measured values at the downstream region where the temperature was decreased abruptly. The pairs of ($k_s^n$, K) from the numerical simulations was $(2.52{\times}10K^{-6}mol/m^2/s,\;1.6{\times}10^5m^3/mol)$, whereas the experimentally determined was $(3.58{\times}10^{-5}mol/m^2/s,\;6.9{\times}10^5m^3/mol)$.
The ultrastructure ore of a nanostructured apatite film nucleated from solution was studied to gain insights into that of bone minerals which is the most important constituent to sustain the strength of bones. Needle-shaped apatite crystal plates with a bimodal size distribution $(\~100\;to\;\~1000 nm)$ were randomly distributed and they were found to grow parallel to the c-axis ([002]), driven by the reduction of surface energy. Between these randomly distributed needle-shaped apatite crystals which are parallel to the film, apatite crystals (20-40nm) with the normal of the grains quasi-perpendicular to the c-axis were observed. These observations suggest that the apatite film is the interwoven structure of apatite crystals with the c-axis parallel and quasi-perpendicular to the fan. In some regions, amorphous calcium phosphate, which is a precursor of apatite, was also observed. In the amorphous phase, small crystalline particle with the size of 2-3 nm were observed. These particles were quite similar, in size and shape, to those observed in the femoral trabecular bone, suggesting the nucleation of apatites by a biomimetic process in vitro is similar to that in vivo.
This study was performed to evaluate the sensitivity of conventional film-screen radiography (CFSR) and direct digital radiography (DDR) for detection of various amounts of free peritoneal fluid. Ten adult male healthy beagles were used in this study. Radiographic examinations were performed in the right lateral and ventrodorsal positions. Fluid was injected in increments of 2.0 ml/kg of body weight up to 20.0 ml/kg of body weight. The images of CFSR and DDR were evaluated by two veterinary radiologists for evidence of abdominal fluid without knowledge of injected fluid volume. Data were evaluated by using the receiver operation curve (ROC) analysis and the area under the curve (AUC). There was no significant difference in detection of peritoneal fluid between DDR and CFSR in the ROC analysis. The accuracy of CFSR (0.805) was relatively higher than that of DDR (0.733), based on the ROC analysis and AUC. AUC of CFSR was higher in most injection doses. These results suggest that CFSR is more accurate than DDR for the detecting peritoneal fluid. Therefore, for situation in which digital radiographs are equivocal or small amount of fluid is suspected, other imaging modalities, such as ultrasonography would be helpful for determining the presence of fluids.
Due to the effect of surface tension, liquid film around a curved edge of solid surface moves from the corner to the flat surface. During this behavior of liquid film, film sagging phenomenon is easily occurred at the solid surface. Behavior of liquid film is determined with the effects of the properties of liquid film and the geometric factors of solid surface. In the present study, 2-D transient CFD simulations were conducted on the behavior of liquid film around a curved edge. The two-phase interfacial flow of liquid film was numerically investigated by using a VOF method in order to predict the film sagging around a curved edge. In the steady state of behavior of liquid film, the liquid film thickness of numerical result showed a good agreement with experimental data. After verifying the numerical results, the characteristics of behavior of liquid film were numerically analyzed with various properties of liquid film such as surface tension coefficient and viscosity. The effects of geometric factors on film sagging were also investigated to reduce the film sagging around a curved edge.

In this paper, we describe a case study of the film 'Sector 7' which was produced by technologies applied fluid simulation. For the CG scenes in the movie which include highly detailed fluid motions, we used smoothed particle hydrodynamics(SPH) technique to express subtle movements of seawater from a crashed huge tank, and used hybrid simulation method of particles and levelsets to describe bursting water from a submarine's broken canopy. We also used detonation shock dynamics(DSD) technique for detailed flame simulations to produce a burning monster, the film"s main character. At this point, the divergence-free vortex particle method was applied to conserve the incompressible property of fluids. In addition, we used an upsampling method to achieve more efficient video production. Consequently, we could produce the high-quality visual effects by using the domestic technologies.

An overview is given on the work of the Laboratory of Nuclear Energy Systems at ETH, Zurich (ETHZ) and of the Laboratory of Thermal Hydraulics at Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), Switzerland on tight-lattice bundles. Two-phase flow in subchannels of a tight triangular lattice was studied experimentally and by computational fluid dynamics simulations. Two adiabatic facilities were used: (1) a vertical channel modeling a pair of neighboring sub-channels; and (2) an arrangement of four subchannels with one subchannel in the center. The first geometry was equipped with two electrical film sensors placed on opposing rod surfaces forming the subchannel gap. They recorded 2D liquid film thickness distributions on a domain of $16{\times}64$ measuring points each, with a time resolution of 10 kHz. In the bubbly and slug flow regime, information on the bubble size, shape, and velocity and the residual liquid film thickness underneath the bubbles were obtained. The second channel was investigated using cold neutron tomography, which allowed the measurement of average liquid film profiles showing the effect of spacer grids with vanes. The results were reproduced by large eddy simulation + volume of fluid. In the outlook, a novel nonadiabatic subchannel experiment is introduced that can be driven to steady-state dryout. A refrigerant is heated by a heavy water circuit, which allows the application of cold neutron tomography.

Electro-Rheological(ER) fluid is applied to a controllable squeeze film damper(SFD) for stabilizing a flexible rotor system. ER fluid is a class of functional fluid whose yield stress varies according to the applied electric field strength, which is observed as viscosity variation of the fluid. In applying ER fluid to a SFD, a pair of rings of the damper can be used as electrodes. When the electrodes are divided into a horizontal pair and a vertical one, the SFD can produce damping force in each direction independently. A prototype of the directionally controllable SFD was constructed and its performance was experimentally and numerically investigated in the present work.
