  • This paper presents the characteristics of volumetric efficiency of an axial type piston pump considering the piston tilting. A numerical analysis is carried out in order to obtain the pressure distribution considering the fluid inertia at the notch of the valve plate. The cylinder pressure variation and the discharge flow rate are measured experimentally according to the operating conditions such as supply pressure, rotational speed, and viscosity of the working fluid by using the cam type test apparatus. Leakage is also measured considering piston tilting. The characteristics of the volumetric efficiency are analyzed with respect to various operating conditions and leakage is also analyzed according to the piston tilting angle. Results are applicable to improve the design of an axial type piston pump.

  • Dynamics of molten drop detachment in the Gas Metal Arc (GMA) welding is investigated using the Volume of Fluid(VOF) method. The electromagnetic effects are included in the formulation of the VOF method which has been widely used to analyze the dynamics of the fluid having a free surface. The molten drop geometry, pressure and velocity profiles within the drop are calculated numerically in the cases of globular and spray transfer modes. It appears that the velocity and current distribution affect metal detachment. It is found that the taper is formed and maintained during the spray transfer by the electromagnetic force. Predicted results show reasonably good agreement with the available experimental data which validates the application of the VOF method to metal transfer analysis.

  • In this paper we present an algorithm about how to simulate two dimensional dam breaking with lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). LBM considers a typical volume element of fluid to be composed of a collection of particles that represented by a particle velocity distribution function for each fluid component at each grid point. We use the modified Lattice Boltzmann Method for incompressible fluid. This paper will represent detailed information on single phase flow which considers only the water instead of both air and water. Interface treatment and conservation of mass are the most important things in simulating free surface where the Interface is treated by mass exchange with the water region. We consider the surface tension on the interface and also bounce back boundary condition for the treatment of solid obstacles. We will compare the results of the simulation with some methods and experimental results.

  • This paper is investigated the entrainment of air into sprays which has significant effects on the combustion efficiency, stability of flame using the air-assisted twin-fluid nozzle in non-burning. The factors which may be expected to affect the entrainment of air by a liquid spray are: Relative velocity of droplet and ambient gas; Drop size and size distribution; Density and other property of the liquid. Here, axial, radial velocity and turbulent kinetic energy of spray droplet was measured with the PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry). Spray characteristics were also visualized using CCD camera. The results indicate that the entrainment rate increases more or less non-linearly with the downstream region.

  • Correlations of drop size and velocity in a spray from the disintegration of liquid jet and liquid film from an internal mixing twin-fluid atomizer, were determined by phase Doppler method. The distribution pattern of Sauter mean diameter(SMD) in a spray was changed by a behavior of liquid flow. As smaller droplets became faster and slower easily by the surrounding conditions, the correlation between drop size and mean velocity was found to be varied as next 3 steps; firstly smaller droplets have a higher mean velocity at the area near atomizer, droplets have almost the same mean velocity and finally larger droplets have a higher mean velocity at the area far from an atomizer.

  • An optimization approach is investigated for the design of new nozzle system in a automatic car wash machine. Three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics and design of experiment methods have been employed to know the mutual interaction between the nozzle shape in the automatic car wash machine and the airflow velocity distribution on the vehicle surface. The performances of air nozzle system were defined as the velocity magnitude and the uniformity of the velocity on the surface of the car. Predicted jet velocity distributions for the optimized geometry were compared with experimental data and the comparisons showed generally good agreements. Also, the performance of the dryer was improved with the optimized results.

  • We performed a discharge analysis on ac plasma display panel through the numerical simulation of the EF (Energy Fluid) model using the electron's energy equation. When it is compared to the results of commonly used LFA (Local Field Approximation) model, there is a clear difference in the spatiotemporal distribution of Xe excited species. In particular, the experimentally observed striation phenomena in the anode region could be observed in EF model and the occurrence of the striation was attributed to the ionization and excitation instability due to the streaming electrons in the anode region plasma.

  • This study aims to identify aerodynamic characteristics of the ramp tab, a mechanical deflector, by conducting a non-combustive experiment using compressed air and supersonic flow test equipment. With the ramp tabs installed symmetrically and asymmetrically on the outlet of the supersonic nozzle, the structure of the flow field, the thrust spoilage, the thrust deviation angle, and the lift/drag coefficients were derived and analyzed. The results show that the asymmetrically-installed ramp tabs are advantageous relative to the symmetrically-installed tabs in terms of the performance of thrust vector control, thrust deviation angle, and lift coefficient.

Exhaust gas mass flow On the whole cross section of catalytic converters more uniform distribution will contribute to its usability. Based on the flow rate of fluid traces given color, Exhaust fluid resistance in the porous catalyst can be estimated, from the efficiency of the catalytic converter that is very important.

  • The study is concerned with the theoretical and experimental investigation of axisymmetric fluid pressure-driven hydroforming of sheet metal by forming over the die cavity. The rigid-plastic finite element method is employed to calculate the stress and strain distribution. The effect of blank size and die radius is also studied in the finite element analysis. Experiments are carried out for hydroforming of cold-rolled steel sheets under various process conditions. The computational results are compared with the experimental results for the forming pressure vs. pole displacement relations and strain distributions. Comparison has shown that theoretical predictions by the finite element method are in good agreement with the experiment with the experimental observations. Thus, it is shown that the rigid-plastic finite element method is effectively used in the analysis of axisymmetric fluid pressure-driven hydroforming process.
