  • This paper presents the field-dependent Bingham characteristics and damping force control of an electro-rheological (ER) fluid under squeeze mode operation. The squeeze force of the ER fluid due to the imposed electric field is analyzed and an appropriate size of the disk-type electrode is devised. On the basis of the theoretical model of the ER fluid under squeeze mode operation, the yield stress and response speed of the ER fluid are distilled from the time responses of squeeze force to the step electric potentials. Measured squeeze forces under various excitation conditions are compared with the predicted ones from Bingham model and time constant obtained at the transient response test. In addition, the controllability of the field-dependent damping force of the ER fluid under squeeze mode is experimentally demonstrated by implementing simple PID controller.

  • This paper presents optimal design procedures of mount based on a magnetorheological (MR) fluid to isolate the vibration in heavy diesel engine system. At first, frequency response and force-displacement transmissibility methods are used to get required damping force that is necessary for effective vibration isolation. From this result, a new type of high damping force engine mount is proposed and the governing equation of Bingham plastic behavior of MR fluid in flow path is mathematically derived under cylindrical coordinates. Finally, parametric design optimization featuring finite element is performed using ANSYS software to get the required damping force in MR mount system which can be used to reduce engine vibration. Damping force of the MR mount is then determined as an objective function in this analysis based on ANSYS. Furthermore, Magnetic analysis is then applied in this process.

  • The nonlinear damping force model is made to identify the properties of the ER (electro-rheological) fluid suspension damper. The instrumentation is carried out to measure the damping force of the ER damper. The higher order spectral analysis method is used to investigate the nonlinear frequency coupling phenomena with the damping force signal according to the sinusoidal excitation of the damper. The distinctive higher order nonlinear characteristics are observed. The nonlinear damping force model, which has the higher order velocity terms, is proposed with the result of higher order spectrum analysis. The higher order terms coefficients, which vary according to the strength of the electric field, are calculated using the least square method.

  • This paper proposes a method for damping force modeling of magnetorheological (MR) damper featuring bypass hole. After describing configuration and of the MR damper, a damping force modeling of the MR damper is derived based on Bingham model of MR fluid. MR damper consists of piston, accumulator, gap, bypass hole and coil. Damping force is consists of spring force induced by accumulator, viscous force induced at gap and bypass hole, and controllable force induced at gap.

  • This paper presents the numerical design technology of a passive orifice fluid damper system especially for the characteristics between the damper piston velocity and the damping force. Numerical analysis with the visual interfacial modeling technique was applied into the analysis of the damper system's dynamics. A prototype orifice fluid damper was manufactured and experimentally tested to validate the numerical simulation results. The performances of various damper system schemes were investigated based on the verified numerical simulation model of orifice fluid damper.

  • This paper is concerned with a new concept for the damper without neither a coil spring nor fluid. The new damper concept consists of the permanent magnets and the cylinder of the conducting material. The opposite pole magnets produces the repulsive forces and this is substituted for the coil spring. The relative motion between the magnets and conducting cylinder produces eddy currents thus resulting in the electromagnetic force, which turns out to be the damping force thus and is substituted for a damping fluid. This damper is called the eddy current damper(ECD). The important advantage of the proposed ECD is that it does not require the damping fluid and any external power and is non-contacting and relatively insensitive to temperature. In the present study, the proposed ECD was constructed and experiments were performed to investigate its dynamic characteristics. The experiments shows that the proposed ECD has the excellent damping ability.

  • In this work, a new type of MR damper with additional flow path in piston is proposed and damping force characteristics are numerically evaluated. Flow-mode type MR damper is considered and mathematical model is established based on Bingham rheological model of MR fluid to obtain accurate prediction of damping force characteristics. Damping force of the proposed MR damper are calculated with respect to piston velocity and input current. In addition, investigation on damping force characteristics is carried out according to number of additional flow path and excellence of the proposed MR damper is demonstrated.

  • In this study, a shock absorber whose orifice area changes according to the oil pressure inside the absorber is developed. The orifice widens and narrows when the oil pressure is high and low, respectively; thus, the orifice area changes according to the oil pressure, in other words, according to the extension/compression velocity. It is well known that the damping force can be expressed as $C{\cdot}v^{\alpha}$. For fluid film damping, the force is proportional to velocity, i.e., ${\alpha}=1$, and for orifice damping, it is proportional to the square of velocity, i.e., ${\alpha}=2$. The shock absorber proposed in this paper can exhibit different relationships between the damping force and velocity because the orifice area changes according to the induced oil pressure. The motivation of this study is to develop a method for designing a shock absorber with desired values of C and ${\alpha}$ which is not just 1 or 2. Theoretical and experimental studies have been conducted to verify the damping characteristics of the shock absorber. The effect of some major design parameters on damping characteristics has been also examined to relate the design parameters to the damping characteristics.

  • This paper presents an experimental study on the energy dissipation characteristics of viscous damping wall (VDW). VDW is consisted of a plate floating in a thin case made of steel plated filled with highly viscous silicone oil. Because VDW demonstrates both viscous damping and stiffness characteristics, the viscous resisting force can be expressed as the sum of velocity dependant viscous damping force and displacement dependant restoring force. The viscous resisting force and energy absorbing capacity can be easily adjusted by changing three factors, i.e. viscosity of the fluid, gap distance and area of the wall plates. VDW was tested using a series of harmonic (sinusoidal) displacement history having different frequency and amplitude and the force-displacement relationship was recorded. The relationship between dissipated energy with three factors and the influence of exciting frequency on resisting force were Investigated
