The transient dynamic-response analysis of fuel-storage tanks of flying vehicles accelerating in the vertical direction is achieved with finite element method. A fuel-storage tank is a representative example of the fluid-structure interaction problem, in which structure and fluid media interact strongly. For the accurate analysis of this complicated fluid-structure system, we employed ALE(arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian) coupling method. Two types of fuel-storage tanks, one with two baffles and the other without baffle, are considered to examine the effect of baffles. The fuel-storage tank with baffles shows more uniform hydrodynamic pressure distribution, resulting effective stress in structural region and faster convergence from transient to steady states. MSC/Dytran, a commercial FEM software for the 3D coupled dynamic analysis, is used for this analysis.
The paper deals with the study of the mechanical time-harmonic forced vibration of the hydro-piezoelectric system consisting of the piezoelectric plate and compressible viscous fluid with finite depth. The exact equations of motion of the theory of linear electro-elasticity for piezoelectric materials are employed for describing the plate motion, however, the fluid flow is described by employing the linearized Navier-Stokes equations for a compressible (barotropic) viscous fluid. The plane-strain state in the plate and the plane flow of the fluid are considered and the corresponding mathematical problems are solved by employing the Fourier transform with respect to the space coordinate which is on the coordinate axis directed along the platelying direction. The expressions of the corresponding Fourier transform are determined analytically, however, the inverse transforms are found numerically. Numerical results on the interface pressure and the electrical potential are obtained for various PZT materials and these results are discussed. According to these results, in particular, it is established that the electromechanical coupling effect can significantly decrease the interface pressure.
A simply supported pipe conveying fluid and two moving masses upon it constitute this nitration system. The equation of motion is derived by using Lagrange's equation. The influence of the velocities of two moving masses, the distance between two moving masses, and the velocities of fluid flow in the pipe have been studied on the dynamic behavior of a simply supported pipe by numerical method. The velocities of fluid flow are considered with in its critical values of a simply supported pipe without moving masses upon It. Their coupling effects on the transverse vibration of a simply supported pipe are inspected too. As the velocity of two moving masses increases, the deflection of a simply supported pipe is increased and the frequency of transverse vibration of a simply supported pipe is not varied. In case of small distance between two masses, the maximum deflection of the pipe occur when the front mass arrive at midspan. Otherwise as the distance get larger, the position of the front masses where midspan deflection is maximum moves beyond the midpoint of a simply supported pipe. The deflection of a simply supported pipe is increased by coupling of the velocities of moving masses and fluid flow.

Since the structural impedance is much greater than that of medium in the most cases, we often assume that the structure is rigid and that the structural vibration is independent of medium, i.e. we usually calculate the vibration of the structure first, and then obtain the radiation sound from it. This assumption is no longer satisfied when the structural stiffness is small or the fluid impedance is comparable to it. This situation often happens in underwater acoustics. Although many researchers have studied about structural-fluid coupling, we have difficulties in solving the problem analytically. Therefore the numerical method using powerful computation leads us to obtain the various coupling problem. To understand the physical coupling phenomena, visualization of sound field by a geometrically simple system(plate-cavity coupled system) is performed experimentally. Acoustic holographic method is used to estimate sound field.
To investigate the effects of ocean conditions on the thermal stress and deformation caused by thermal stratification of a pressurizer surge line in a floating nuclear power plant (FNPP), the finite element simulation platform ANSYS Workbench is utilized to conduct the fluid-solid-thermal coupling transient analysis of the surge line under normal "wave-out" condition (no motion) and under ocean conditions (rolling and pitching), generating the transient response characteristics of temperature distribution, thermal stress and thermal deformation inside the surge line. By comparing the calculated results for the three motion conditions, it is found that ocean conditions can significantly improve the thermal stratification phenomenon within the surge line, but may also result in periodic oscillations in the temperature, thermal stress, and thermal deformation of the surge line. Parts of the surge line that are more susceptible to thermal fatigue damage or failure are determined. According to calculation results, the improvements are recommended for pipeline structure to reduce the effects of thermal oscillation caused by ocean conditions. The analysis method used in this study is beneficial for designing and optimizing the pipeline structure of a floating nuclear power plant, as well as for increasing its safety.

During the operation of a hydro turbine the fluid mechanical pressure loading on the turbine blades provides the driving torque on the turbine shaft. This fluid loading results in a structural load on the component which in turn causes the turbine blade to deflect. Classically, these mechanical stresses and deflections are calculated by means of finite element analysis (FEA) which applies the pressure distribution on the blade surface calculated by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) as a major boundary condition. Such an approach can be seen as a one-way coupled simulation of the fluid structure interaction (FSI) problem. In this analysis the reverse influence of the deformation on the fluid is generally neglected. Especially in axial machines the blade deformation can result in a significant impact on the turbine performance. The present paper analyzes this influence by means of fully two-way coupled FSI simulations of a propeller turbine utilizing two different approaches. The configuration has been simulated by coupling the two commercial solvers ANSYS CFX for the fluid mechanical simulation with ANSYS Classic for the structure mechanical simulation. A detailed comparison of the results for various blade stiffness by means of changing Young's Modulus are presented. The influence of the blade deformation on the runner discharge and performance will be discussed and shows for the configuration investigated no significant influence under normal structural conditions. This study also highlights that a two-way coupled fluid structure interaction simulation of a real engineering configuration is still a challenging task for today's commercially available simulation tools.
In this paper, we present a numerical model for fluid-structure interaction between structure built of porous media and acoustic fluid, which provides both pore pressure inside porous media and hydrodynamic pressures and hydrodynamic forces exerted on the upstream face of the structure in an unified manner and simplifies fluid-structure interaction problems. The first original feature of the proposed model concerns the structure built of saturated porous medium whose response is obtained with coupled discrete beam lattice model, which is based on Voronoi cell representation with cohesive links as linear elastic Timoshenko beam finite elements. The motion of the pore fluid is governed by Darcy's law, and the coupling between the solid phase and the pore fluid is introduced in the model through Biot's porous media theory. The pore pressure field is discretized with CST (Constant Strain Triangle) finite elements, which coincide with Delaunay triangles. By exploiting Hammer quadrature rule for numerical integration on CST elements, and duality property between Voronoi diagram and Delaunay triangulation, the numerical implementation of the coupling results with an additional pore pressure degree of freedom placed at each node of a Timoshenko beam finite element. The second original point of the model concerns the motion of the outside fluid which is modeled with mixed displacement/pressure based formulation. The chosen finite element representations of the structure response and the outside fluid motion ensures for the structure and fluid finite elements to be connected directly at the common nodes at the fluid-structure interface, because they share both the displacement and the pressure degrees of freedom. Numerical simulations presented in this paper show an excellent agreement between the numerically obtained results and the analytical solutions.
In the systems with largely pipe head loss, variable speed pumps are generally used because substantial energy saving can be expected from such systems by controlling pump speed and also they offer simpler maintenance and operational ease even in conditions where abrupt changes In flow rate and head can occur. The invertor or the fluid coupling system are mainly adopted to control the rotating speed. In this paper, operating conditions at Migum pressing pump station(5 stage), where the fluid coupling system was the first installed for KOWACO, are investigated and analysed so that information thus gained can be usefully employed in the efficient operation of variable speed pump in new installations of in-line booster pumping station.
In this study, a fluid-structure interaction (FSI) analysis system has been developed in order to evaluate the turbine cascade performance with blade structural deformation effect. Relative movement of the rotor with respect to stator is reflected by modeling independent two computational domains. To consider the deformed position of rotor airfoil, dynamic moving grid method is applied. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with one equation Spalart-Allmaras and two-equation SST $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence models are solved to predict unsteady fluid dynamic loads. A fully implicit time marching scheme based on the Newmark direct integration method with high artificial damping is used to compute the fluid-structure interaction problem. Cascade performance evaluations for different elastic axis positions are presented and compared each other. It is importantly shown that the predicted aerodynamic performance considering structural deformation effect of blade can show some deviations compared to the data generally computed from rigid blade configurations and the position of elastic axis also tend to give sensitive effect.

Since large-scale commercial wind turbine generator systems such as MW-class wind turbines are becoming widely operated, the vibration and distortion of the blade are becoming larger and larger. Therefore the soft structure design instead of the solid-design is one of the important concepts to reduce the structural load and the cost of the wind turbine rotors. The objectives of the study are development of the fluid-structure coupled analysis code and evaluation of soft rotor-blade design to reduce the unsteady structural blade load. In this paper, fluid-structure coupled analysis for the HAWT rotor blade is performed by free wake panel method coupled with hinge-spring blade model for the flapwise blade motion. In the model, the continuous deflection of the rotor blade is represented by flapping angle of the hinge with one degree of freedom. The calculation results are evaluated by comparison with the database of the NREL unsteady aerodynamic experiment. In the analysis the unsteady flapwise moments in yawed inflow conditions are compared for the blades with different flapwise eigen frequencies.
