This paper describes numerical modeling of transcritical and supercritical fluid flows within a liquid propellant rocket engine. In the present paper, turbulence is modeled by standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model. A conserved scalar approach in conjunction with multi-environment probability density function model is used to account for the turbulent mixing of real-fluids in the transcritical and supercritical region. The two real-fluid equations of state and dense-fluid correction schemes for mixtures are used to construct thermodynamic data library based on the conserved scalar. In this study, calculations are made on two cryogenic nitrogen jets under different chamber pressures. Sensitivity analysis for two different real-fluid equations of sate is particularly emphasized. Based on numerical results, precise structures of cryogenic nitrogen jets are discussed in detail. Numerical results show that the current real-fluid model can predict the essential features of the cryogenic liquid nitrogen jets.
In the case of heavy duty diesel engines, the Urea-SCR system is currently considered to reduce the NOx emission as a proved technology, and it is widely studied to get the high performance and durability. However, the nozzles to inject the urea-water solution into the exhaust pipe occur some problems, including the nozzle clogging, deposition of urea-water solution on the inner wall of the exhaust pipe, resulting in the production of urea salt. In this study, a swirl-type twin-fluid nozzle to produce more fine droplets was used as a method to solve the problems. The effect of the nozzle cap geometry, including the length to diameter ratio ($l_o/d_o$) and chamfer, on the spray characteristics were investigated experimentally. The length to diameter ratio of nozzle cap were varied from 0.25 to 1.125. The chamfer angle of the nozzle cap was constant at 90o. The mean velocity and droplet size distributions of the spray were measured using a 2-D PDA (phase Doppler analyzer) system, and the spray half-width, AMD (arithmetic mean diameter) and SMD (Sauter mean diameter) were analyzed. At result, The larger length to diameter ratio of nozzle cap were more small SMD and AMD. The effect of the chamfer did increase the radial velocity, while it did not affect the atomization effect.
Partial oxidation reformer was fabricated and operated using commercial transportation fuels. Fuel injector and heating coil were used for fuel atomization and startup, respectively. The reformer was designed to produce syngas for $150{\sim}200W_e$ class solid oxide fuel cell. The reformer was operated in the $O_2$/C range between 0.6 and 0.8 while the capacity was fixed at $150W_e$. The temperature range in catalyst bed was between $500^{\circ}C$ and $900^{\circ}C$. Only 83% fuel was converted to $H_2$, CO, $CO_2$ and $CH_4$ at the operating conditions. The lowest temperature increase to $700^{\circ}C$ when the reformer was operated at $200W_e$, Although the temperature profiles was improved, fuel conversion was 88%. On the other hand, fuel was completely converted when micro-reactor operated at the same condition. This difference maybe due to aromatic compounds formation at homogeneous region. In addition, a significant amount of coke deposition was observed at vent line. Homogeneous reaction depends on the degree of mixing. For this purpose, two fluid nozzle and Ultra sonic injector were compared to investigate the effect of atomization. Sauter mean diameter(SMD) of Ultra sonic injector was lower than two-fluid nozzle at test condition. However, conversion efficiency and fuel conversion were not improved by using two-fluid nozzle. these results imply that the temperature of homogeneous reaction region should be controlled to prevent coke formation.
The Twin-fluid Swirl Nozzles are used in many parts of the industry to produce homogeneous spray. This study is to investigate the effects of outer air swiller and inner water swiller on atomization of liquid.. The experiment was carried out with increasing air-flow rate at constant liquid-flow rate and with changing outer air swiller angle and inner water swiller angle. A Particle Dynamics Analyzer(PDA) was used to measure drop size, mean and ms values of axial velocity, number density and Sauter mean diameter(SMD). The axial mean velocity and SMD of droplets were measured along the center line and radial directions. It was found that the higher air flow-rate resulted in the smaller Sauter mean diameter of liquid spray and the higher axial mean velocity of droplets. This experimental results will be conveniently used for the preliminary design stage of twin-fluid nozzle development.
Machining is a one of the broadly used manufacturing process to produce the parts, products and various molds and dies. The environmental impact due to aerosol generation via atomization process is a major concern associated with environmental consciousness. This paper presents the experimental results to analyze the characteristics of cutting fluid aerosol generation in grinding process. Experimental results show that the generated fine aerosol which particle size less than 10micron appears near worker's breath zone under given operational conditions. The aerosol concentration is much higher enough to affect human health risk with its generated aerosol quantities. This quantitative analysis can be provided the basic knowledge f3r further research for environmentally conscious machining technology developments.

Feedwater flowing tube side of number 5 high pressure feedwatrr heaters was heated by extracting steam from high pressure turbine and draining water from moisture separators and number 6 high pressure feedwater heaters and supplied into steam generators. Because the extracting steam from the high pressure turbine is two phase fluid of high temperature, high pressure, and high speed and flows to inverse direction after impinging to impingement baffle. the shell wall of the number 5 high pressure feedwater heater may be affected by flow accelerated corrosion. On May 14, 1999, Point Beach Nuclear Plant (PBNP) with operating at full power experienced a steam leak from rupture of shell side of number 4B feedwater heater. Also, d domestic nuclear power plant experienced a severe wall thinning of shell side of number 5A and 5B feedwater heaters. This paper describes the fluid mixing analysis study using PHOENICS code in order to get at the root of the shell wall thinning of the feedwater heaters. The sections included in the fluid mixing analysis model are around the number 5h feedwater heater shell including the extracting pipeline. To identify the relation between the local velocities and wall thinning. the local velocities according to the analysis results were compared with the distribution of the shell wall thickness by ultrasonic test.
Electrospray is used in various industries because it can produce continuous and uniform droplets. However, it is difficult to find optimal spraying condition due to lack of data in various conditions. In this study, various conditions were divided into electric parameters and fluid property. The electric parameters set Nozzle to Substrate(NTS), nozzle diameters and the fluid property set viscosity and conductivity as conditions. In this study, it observes spray patterns, Sauter Mean Diameter(SMD) according to conditions. As a result, fluid properties had a greater effect on the cone-Jet mode than on the nozzle diameter, NTS, and flowrate. All of solutions have Stable cone-jet mode at voltage of 8.5 kV, NTS of 20 mm and nozzle diameter of 0.2 mm. SMD has 27% different depending on viscosity and conductivity. The increased flowrate and viscosity are rising break-up length and thickening jet also jet is thinned by increased conductivity. Experiments have confirmed that the jet is thickened by increased flowrate and viscosity, and that the jet is thinned by conductivity.
The effect of air entrainment in twin-fluid spray structure is investigated experimentally by varing the amount of itemizing air. The air entrainment is expected to affect on droplet size and velocity, droplet number density, turbulent kinetic energy and vorticity. PDA(Phase Doppler Anemometer) and PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) system are used to measure those important factors in analyzing spray structure. The results show that spray structure consists of three distinctive regions ; the atomizing region near nozzle, characterizing strong convective effect, the central core region where droplets are accelerated, and the spray sheath region where droplets are decelerated due to air entrainment. The local air entrainment rate is largest near nozzle, characterizing strong turbulent kinetic energy and vorticity but deceases along axial distance.
Main purpose of the current paper is to show results of time lag analysis using phase information of flame transfer function in order to predict combustion instabilities in a gas turbine combustor. The flame transfer function (FTF) is modeled using a commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code (Fluent). Comparisons of the modeled flame shapes with the measured ones were made using the optimized heat transfer conditions and combustion models. The FTF modeling results show a quite good agreement with the measurement data in predicting the phase delay (i.e. time lag). Time lag analysis results using the phase of FTF shows better combustion instability prediction accuracy than using time lag calculated from the steady state flame length.
