The present study is devoted to the influence of a superposed radial inflow in a rotor-stator cavity with a peripheral opening. The flow regime is turbulent, the two boundary layers being separated by a core region. An original theoretical solution is obtained for the core region, explaining the reason why a weak radial inflow has no major influence near the periphery of the cavity but strongly affects the flow behavior near the axis. The validity of the theory is tested with the help of a new set of experimental data including the radial and tangential mean velocity components, as well as three components of the Reynolds stress tensor measured by hot-wire anemometry. The theoretical results are also in good agreement with numerical results obtained with the Fluent code and experimental data from the literature.
As a basic study of the aero-acoustic noise, Large eddy simulations were carried out for a fixed circular cylinder at Renolds number (Re=$9.0\times10^4$) using commercial CFD code, FLUENT. The subgrid-scale turbulent viscosity was modeled by Smagorinsky-Lilly model adapted to structured meshes. The results of analysis showed that time-averaged value, $\bar{C}_D$ is approximately 1.47 which is considerably adjacent with the experimentally measured value of 1.32 in comparison to the values performed by previous researchers. It is observed that there are the very small acoustic pressure fluctuation with the same frequency of the Karman vortex street.
The prediction of the safe separation of the external stores carried on military aircraft is an important task in the aerodynamic design area having the objective to define the operational, release envelopes. The major concern of this study is only safe jettison problem with ejections. This work consists of concept and some results for external store configurations. A Computational Fluid Dynamics technique is applied to calculate the aerodynamic forces. The FLUENT with an implicit Euler solver is used for the present simulations. The computational results are validated against the experimental data.

The flow and heat transfer characteristics at the surface of two-dimensional protruding heated blocks using confined impingement multiple slot jets were computationally investigated Numerical predictions were made for round-edged nozzles at several nozzle-to-target plate spacings and jet-to-jet distances, with turbulent jet Reynolds numbers ranging from 2000 to 7800. The commercial finite-volume code FLUENT was used to solve the heat transfer characteristics and flow fields using a RNG $\textsc{k}-\varepsilon$ model. The computed heat transfer characteristics at the surface of heated blocks were in good qualitative agreement with previous experimental data The results of heat transfer characteristics on the surface of protruding heated blocks are important considerations in electronics Packaging design.
The Korean Next Generation Reactor(KNGR) is a Pressurized Water Reactor adopting direct vessel injection(DVI) to optimize the performance of emergency core cooling system(ECCS). In a certain accident, however, pressurized thermal shock(PTS) of the vessel due to the sudden contact with the injected cold water is expected. In this paper, an accident of Main Steam Line Break(MSLB) has been numerically investigated with direct vessel injections and an increased volume flow rate in some cold legs. Using FLUENT code, temperature distributions of the fluid in the downcomer and of reactor vessel including the core region have been calculated, together with the distribution of convective heat transfer coefficient(CHTC) at the cladding surface of the reactor vessel. The result shows that some parts of the core region of the reactor vessel have higher temperature gradient expressing higher thermal stress.

A numerical investigation was performed to determine the effect of airfoil on the optimum flap height using NACA 0021 Wells turbine. The five double flaps which have 0.5% chord height difference were selected. A Navier-Stokes code, FLUENT, was used to calculate the flow field of the Wells turbine. The basic feature of the Wells turbine is that even though the cyclic airflow produces oscillating axial forces on the airfoil blades, the tangential force on the rotor is always in the same direction. Geometry used to define the 3-D numerical grid is based upon that of an experimental test rig. This paper tries to analyze the optimum double flap of Wells turbine with the numerical analysis.

In this paper, the characteristics of incompressible flow in a tube type marine fuel oil filter have been investigated. Fluent program has been used to obtain the solutions for the problems of three-dimensional, turbulent fuel oil flow in a filtering system. The inlet flow field is assumed to be uniform. The velocity and pressure distributions were obtained using Darcy's law. The increase of inlet velocity for cleaning fuel oil may cause some problems like vibration of the filter element. It was also required to consider the distribution of cleaning velocity because the worst distribution of cleaning velocity may cause the local insufficient cleaning effect and furthermore the effective filtration area can be reduced. The simulated results show that the computer code can be successfully applied for simulation of the complex base oil flow through the porous media. This paper could be applied to the design of auto-backwashing filtering system as design factor.

The hear transfer mechanism initiating the friction welding is examined and a transient three dimensional heat conduc-tion model for the welding of two dissimilar cylindrical metal bars is investigated. The cylindrical metal bars are made of materials made of A2024 and SM 45C. Numerical simulations of heat flow are performed using the finite volume method. Respectively. Commercial FLUENT code is used in the heat flow simulation and maximum temperature and distribution of temperature are calculated. Temperature of friction welded joining face is compared with the temperature distribution measured by experiment and numerical simulation. The maximum temperature of friction welded joining face is lower than melting point of A2024-T6 aluminum alloy using insert metal. The temperature distribution of friction welded join- ing face with insert metal is more uniform than that of without inset metal.
This study has the aim to develop a numerical design regarding the position and the inner performances of a heat exchanger in a light helicopter. the problem was to find first of all the best position of the heat exchanger inside the engine vane in order to maximize the air flow rate capable to pass through the heat exchanger section. It is to be said that the only air contribution in the vane comes from the opening present in the roof under the main rotor. The design has been performed by means of the commercial code Fluent and using the well known grid generator ICEM CFD. Different positions are first investigated so to establish the best one. Subsequently, different areas of the opening on the roof have been considered in order to maximize even more the flow rate in the heat exchanger that was not sufficient based on the first guess of velocity, as aforementioned. At the end interesting design results are presented and discussed by contours of fields and values.
Current loads acting on offshore vessels are important for predicting the hydrodynamic and structural responses of the vessels. It is also true for analyzing the behavior of moored systems under the action of ocean current. Unfortunately there are few standardized current load coefficients for offshore vessels and it is extremely difficult to be applied to arbitrary hull shapes, if any. Therefore current load coefficients for three hull shapes are calculated in this study using a CFD code, which is well known in the shipbuilding industry. In order to validate the present approach, a typical VLCC is taken as numerical example and resulting current coefficients are compared with experiment together with the OCIMF data. The comparison shows a good agreement in the qualitative sense. Two additional models considered herein are a shuttle tanker and a FPSO under deepwater condition $(WD/T{\geq}6)$. The present numerical approach may be utilized for practical design of offshore vessels.
