  • A new light pink spray-mum, 'Brown ND' was bred by crossing between 'Noeul', a yellow anemone type flower, and 'Dalma', a pink anemone type flower in October 2003. The growth and flowering characteristics were investigated in forcing, natural, and retarding cultures from 2005 to 2007. The 'Brown ND' was a medium-flowering fall-mum with light pink anemone type flower and had 10.6 flowers per stem, 4.1 cm diameter of flower in natural culture. The number of days to flowering and flowers per plant was 59 and 9.1, respectively, in forcing culture of 'Brown ND' whereas the number of days to flowering was 49 in retarding culture.

  • An Asiatic lily (Lilium spp.) cultivar 'Onnuri' for cut and pot flower was developed in 2006 at Jeollabukdo Agricultural Research & Extension Services, Iksan, Korea. The cross was made in 1999 between 'Avignon', orange colored, and 'Nove Cento', yellow colored. A line was preliminarily selected as 'A99-6-48' by reason of stable flower color and shape among germinated seedlings. It had been multiplicated through in vitro culture and then bulbed on field during 2002~2003. After characteristics were investigated from 2004 to 2005, finally it was named as an 'Onnuri' in 2006. Flower of 'Onnuri' belongs to orange-red group with its center shown orange group. Plant height is 92.8 cm, flower size is medium as 13.8 cm. Stigma color is red-brown and blooming direction is upward-facing. Flowering time is mid-June.

  • The present study was conducted to compare the relative efficiency of four different breeding methods in tobacco varietal development. A single Fl hybrid plant from cross of two flue-cured cultivars of Nicotiana tabacum L Bright Yellow 4(BY4) and NC95, was selfed. F2population above cross was screened for resistance against bacterial wilt caused by Pseudommonas solanacearum E.F.Smith under the naturally infested field conditions, and the 30 lines were developed from F2 individual plant by anther culture (ADH), maternal method utilizing Nicotiana afpicana (MDH), single- seed descent(SSD) and Bulk breeding method, respectively. All characters except content of total alkaloids of ADH and MDH which wore bred by haploid methods reduced more than that of lines bred by conventional methods(SSD & Bulk) : however, the yields were 8% lower than other lines. The total alkaloid content of ADH was higher than that of MDH, and yield was reduced about 4n even though the number of leaf was identical with the MDH. All other characters of ADH were also reduced significantly. In the lines bred by conventional methods, population developed by SSD showed significantly wider leaf width, shorter plant height, later days to flower, and lower in percent reducing sugar than those by Bulk. The populations derived from haploid method showed greater phenotypic variance and wider range of variation than conventionally developed ones. The results obtained indicate that selection will provide a significantly greater genetic gain for leaf number and leaf length in the ADU and MDH populations, and for plant height and days to flower in the SSD and Bulk populations.

  • A standard rose cultivar, 'To Dios'(Rosa hybrida) was selected for use as a cut flower from the progeny of a cross between 'Vanilla perfume' and 'Marcia' at the research and development division of the Goyang-si Agricultural Technology Center in 2013. 'Vanilla perfume', an orange-colored (RHS Orange Group 27C) standard rose cultivar with 48 petals, was used as the female plant. 'Marcia', a white-colored (RHS Green white Group 157B) standard rose cultivar with 96 petals was used as the male parent. A cross was made in 2009 and seedlings were produced. Selections were made between 2010 and 2013, and a plant with good cut flower traits was finally selected and named 'To Dios'. 'To Dios' is a standard rose with large flowers of 11.2 cm in diameter and 128 peach-colored (RHS Red Group 36B) petals per flower. Vase life of this cultivar is up to 15 days. It takes 47 days from pruning to blooming and cut flower productivity is approximately $160stems/m^2$ per year. 'To Dios' was registered as a new cultivar No. 4875 with the Korea Seed & Variety Service on March 19, 2014.

The variety 'Dream Round' was initially derived from a cross in 2006 between 'Hebo' a seed parent, a spray chrysanthemum cultivar with white anemone type, and 'Samos' as a pollen parent, a spray chrysanthemum variety with white anemone type. The cultivar has anemone type with white petals. Trial evaluation was conducted from 2008 to 2010 for the selection of that cultivar, including a shading culture in spring and a retarding culture in summer. The flowering time of 'Dream Round' was October 24th, and year-round flowering was possible by shading or lighting treatment. The diameter of flower of 'Dream Round' was 34.1 mm. Numbers of flowers per stem and petals per flower of 'Dream Round' were 12.8 and 26.1, respectively. Its leaf color was green (Green Group 147A) and plant height was 92.4 cm. Days to flowering of 'Dream Round' under the short day treatment was about 54 in spring, and diameter of flower of 'Dream Round' was 34.2 mm in the summer. The vase life of 'Dream Round' was 21.7 days in autumn.

  • A light pink single freesia (Freesia hybrida Hort.) 'Bolero' was developed from a cross of breeding line ('Yellow Ballet' and 'Yellow Dream') and 'Sandra' followed by seedling and line selections at the National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science (NIHHS), Rural Development Administration (RDA) in 2007. Growth and flowering characteristic tests were conducted from 2003 to 2006. 'Bolero' has single type flower with light pink color (RHS, R55B). • This study was conducted to identify cross compatibility with table grape and pollen characteristics by flower type in Vitis amurensis Rupr. (GW-22, GW-45, GW-56, GW-200, GW-202 and GW-300) collected in Gangwon area. Flower structure, germinability and morphology of pollen, and cross compatibility with table grape were examined. Flowers of GW-22 and GW-56 had an aborted gynoecium and five erect fdaments, and all of them was male. The percentage of pollen germination of GW-22 and GW-56 on the agar medium was 27.6-29.8%. Flowers of GW-45, GW-200, GW-202 and GW-300 had well-developed pistils and five stamens with curled filaments. The percentage of pollen germination of female plant on the agar medium was 0%. Pollen grail)s from GW-22 and GW-56 (male flower) have symmetrically distributed three furrows on their surface and each furrow contains a germ pore at the equatorial level (Tricolporated). GW-45, GW-200, GW202, and GW-300 (Female flower) produced pollen grains with no germinative structures (acolporated). In self-pollina-tion of female flowers, berries of clusters were no berry and no seed. Therefore, flower structure in V. amurensis proved to be that of other dioecious Vitis species. In cross combination of female and male flower of V. amurensis made normal seeds. In cross combination of table grape and V. amurensis of male flower made normal seeds. But, in cross combination of female flower of V. amurensis did not make seeds. Therefore, V. amurensis was cross compatible with vitis spp, and V. amurensis varieties may contribute to breeding studies of Vitis spp.
