A Study on the Fundamental Cause of Stall Stagnation Phenomena in Surges in Compressor Systems

  • Although the stall stagnation phenomena have often been experienced in site and also analytically in numerical experiments in surges in systems of compressors and flow paths, the fundamental causes have not been identified yet. In order to clarify the situations, behaviours of infinitesimal disturbance waves superposed on a main flow were studied in a simplified one-dimensional flow model. A ratio of the amplifying rate of the system instability to the characteristic slope of the compressor element was surveyed as the instability enhancement factor. Numerical calculations have shown the following tendency of the factor. In the situation where both the sectional area ratio and the length ratio of the delivery flow-path to the suction duct are sufficiently large, the enhancement factors are greater in magnitude, which means occurrence of ordinary deep surges. However, in the situation where the area ratio and/or the length ratio is relatively smaller, the enhancement factor tends to lessen significantly, which situation tends to suppress deep surges for the same value of the characteristic slope. It could result in the stall stagnation condition. In the domain of area ratio vs. length ratio of the delivery duct to the suction duct, contour-lines of the enhancement factor behave qualitatively similar to those of the stall stagnation boundaries of a fan analytically obtained, suggesting that a certain range of the enhancement factor values could specify the stagnation occurrence. The significant decreases in the factors are observed to accompany appearances of phase lags and travelling waves in the wave motions, which macroscopically suggests breaking down of the complete surge actions of filling and emptying of the air in the delivery duct. The strength of the action is deeply related with acoustic interferences and is evaluated in terms of the volume-modified reduced resonance frequency proposed by the author. These observations have shown the fundamental cause and the sequence of the stall stagnation in principle.

A Virtual-Queue based Backpressure Scheduling Algorithm for Heterogeneous Multi-Hop Wireless Networks

  • Backpressure based scheduling has been considered as a promising technique for improving the throughput of a wide range of communication networks. However, this scheduling technique has not been well studied for heterogeneous wireless networks. In this paper, we propose a virtual-queue based backpressure scheduling (VQB) algorithm for heterogeneous multi-hop wireless networks. The VQB algorithm introduces a simple virtual queue for each flow at a node for backpressure scheduling, whose length depends on the cache size of the node. When calculating flow weights and making scheduling decisions, the length of a virtual queue is used instead of the length of a real queue. We theoretically prove that VQB is throughput-optimal. Simulation results show that the VQB algorithm significantly outperforms a classical backpressure scheduling algorithm in heterogeneous multi-hop wireless networks in terms of the packet delivery ratio, packet delivery time, and average sum of the queue lengths of all nodes per timeslot.

A Comparison of Surge Behaviors in Multi-Stage and Single-Stage Axial Flow Compressors

  • Information on the surge behaviors and stall stagnation boundaries for a nine-stage axial flow compressor are summarized on the basis of analytical data in comparison with those for a single-stage one, with attention to the pressure ratio effect. The general trends of the surge loop behaviors of the pressure-mass flow are similar for both compressors including the fact that the subharmonic surges tend to appear very near the stall stagnation boundaries. With respect to the nine-stage compressor, however, the mild loops in the subharmonic surges tend to be very small in size relative to the deep loops, and at the same time, insufficient surge recovery phenomenon, which is a kind of subharmonic surge, appears also far from the stagnation boundary for relatively short delivery flow-paths. The latter is found to be a rear-stage surge caused by unstalling and re-stalling of the rear stages with the front-stages kept in stall in the stalled condition of the whole compressor, which situation is caused by stage-wise mismatching in the bottom pressure levels of the in-stall multi-stage compressor. The fundamental information on the stall stagnation boundaries is given by a group of normalized geometrical parameters including relative delivery flow-path length, relative suction flow-path length, and sectional area-pressure ratio, and by another group of normalized frequency parameters including relative surge frequencies, modified reduced resonance frequencies, and modified reduced surge frequencies. Respective groups of the normalized parameters show very similar tendency of behaviors for the nine-stage compressor and the single-stage compressor. The modified reduced resonance frequency could be the more reasonable parameter suggesting the flow-induced oscillation nature of the surge phenomena. It could give the stall stagnation boundary in a more unified manner than the Greitzer's B parameter.

  • Logistics systems can be evaluated by how productively distribution center operates, how promptly transportation vehicle dispatches, how efficiently facility layout is, and so on. In this paper, a practical vehicle routing scheme with fixed delivery time and fixed vehicle routes is introduced. The method helps the distribution center reduce logistics cost with respect to dispatching vehicles, and satisfy the customer with pre-determined delivery time window constraints. A case study has shown that the proposed scheme not only generates a feasible schedule with time windows, but also balances material flow in warehouse.

Experimental Study on a Micro Flow Sensor (미소 유량 센서에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • In the present paper, a micro flow sensor, which can be used at bio-delivery systems and micro heat pumps, is developed. For this, the micro flow sensor is integrated on a quartz wafer ($SiO_2$) and is manufactured by simple and convenient microfabrication processes. The micro flow sensor aims for measuring mass flow rates in the low range of about $0{\sim}20$ SCCM. The micro flow sensor is composed of temperature sensors, a heater, and a flow microchannel. The temperature sensors and the heater are manufactured by the sputtering processes in this study. In the microfabrication processes, stainless steel masks with different patterns are used to deposit alumel and chromel for temperature sensors and nichrome for the heater on the quartz wafer. The microchannel is made of Polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS) easily. A deposited quartz wafer is bonded to the PDMS microchannel by using the air plasma. Finally, we confirmed the good operation of the present micro flow sensor by measuring flow rate.

  • This paper is a report of a simulation study that investigates a dynamic approach to scheduling jobs in a conventional shop floor, especially in an assemoly-type welding process. We consider both JIT arrival and JIT delivery. Various dispatching rules are tested for the following performance measures; mean flow time, rate of tardy jobs, mean tardiness, sum of mean tardiness and mean earliness. The results indicate that SPT rule is the best for the mean flow time. MSLACK that we suggest in this paper, is the best for the mean tardiness and the sum of mean tardiness and mean earliness. However, it is not clear that which rule is the best for the rate of tardy jobs.

  • The functional spherical microcapsules were produced through the innovative conjunction of the well-defined amphiphilic block copolymer and the stable droplet phase flow in the micro chemical plant. The microcapsules were formed to have hollow inner cavity and outer surface wall with nano-pores. To examine the potential of encapsulating foreign biochemical molecules, Congo-red dye was loaded into the microcapsule. The release performance in the specific surroundings such as temperature, pH and time was evaluated quantitatively.

  • Previously proposed contamination detecting sensor was revisited for the investigation of the liquid tendency. Experiments revealed different output voltages for several kinds of liquid input, but showed same values for various flow rates of each liquid. The transmittance of the liquid was measured, and it is well correlated with the voltages. Linearity in values and the compensation of the sensor to sensor deviation were tried to obtain. And, long term test was performed as attached at the manufacturing equipment in the field.

  • Recently in manufacturing environment, manufacturing order is characterized by unstable market demand, shorter product life cycle, a variety of product and shorter production lead time. In order to adapt this manufacturing order, flexible manufacturing systems(FMS) in manufacturing technology advances into the direction that machines become further versatile functionally and that tools are controlled by fast tool delivery device. Unlike conventional FMS to mainly focus on part flow, it is important to control tool flow in single-stage multimachine systems(SSMS), consisting of versatile machines and fast tool delivery device. This research is motivated by the thought that exact estimation of tool competition at part release in SSMS enhances the system performance. In this paper, in SSMS under dynamic tool allocation strategy to share tools among machines, we propose real-time part release and tool allocation algorithms which can apply real factory and which can improve system performance.
