  • Recently micro shock tube is extensively being used in many diverse fields of engineering applications but the detailed flow physics involved in it is hardly known due to high Knudsen number and strong compressibility effects. Unlike the macro shock tube, the surface area to volume ratio for a micro shock tube is very large. This unique effect brings many complexities into the flow physics that makes the micro shock tube different compared with the macro shock tube. In micro shock tube, the inter- molecular forces of working gas can play an important role in specifying the flow characteristics of the unsteady shock wave flow which is essentially generated in all kinds of shock tubes. In the present study, a CFD method was used to predict and visualize the unsteady shock wave flows using the unsteady compressible Navier-Stokes equations, furnished with the no-slip and slip wall boundary conditions. Maxwell's slip equations were used to mathematically model the shock movement at high Knudsen number. The present CFD results show that the propagation speed of the shock wave is directly proportional to the initial pressure and diameter of micro shock tube.

  • Incompressible flow inside a circular cylinder Including periodically oscillating free surface waves was studied primarily by using a numerical method. We developed a finite difference scheme based on the MAC method applicable to three-dimensional free-surface flows, and applied it to the present flow model to study tho flow characteristics as well as the fluid stirring. To verify the validity of our scheme, we performed a simple experiment for flow visualization. We found that the numerical results show a reasonable agreement with the observed flow patterns.

  • The study of swirl flow has been of technical and scientific interest because it has an internal recirculation field and its tangential velocity is related to the curvature of the streamline. The fluid flow for ducts or elbows of an internal engine has been much studied through numerical methods and experiments, but studies about swirl flow has been insufficient. Using the PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) method, this study found the time-mean velocity distribution, time-mean turbulent intensity, with swirl and without swirl flow for Re=10,000, 15,000, 20,000, and 25,000 along longitudinal sections and the results appear to be physically reasonable. In addition, axial velocity distribution is compared with that of Jeong's, Kodadadi's and Murakami's. It was found that the highest velocity of swirl and non-swirl flow occurs in the opposite position at the center of a round tube, $\phi$=45$^{\circ}$

  • A fundamental understanding of the flow around the wind turbine is important to investigate the performance of new type of wind turbine. This study presents the simulation of three dimensional flow fields around the Darius wind turbine as an example. Incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are used for this simulation. The rotating coordinate system that rotates in the same speed of the turbine is used in order to simplify the boundary condition on the blades. Additionally, the boundary fitted coordinate system is employed in order to express the shape of the blades precisely. Fractional step method is used to solve the basic equations. Third order upwind scheme is chosen for the approximation of the non-linear terms since it can compute the flow field stably even at high Reynolds number without any turbulence models. The flow fields obtained in this study are highly complex due to the three dimensionality and are visualized effectively by using the technique of the computer graphics.

  • This article is experimentally to investigate thermal-flow characteristics of the magnetic fluid for concentric annuli under externally fixed magnetic fields using visualization technique. Temperatures of the inner tube and outer tube in the tested concentric annuli were constantly maintained at both $30^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$ and the middle tube was filled with the magnetic fluid. Magnetic field was uniformly applied using 4 permanent magnets at 4 directions of the concentric annuli. As a result, the thermal-flow characteristics of the magnetic fluid for concentric annuli could be controlled by directions of the external magnetic fields.

  • Vertical fence has the coherent flow structure in front of the fence. In the present study, the wake change due to the flow separator in front of the vertical fence was experimentally investigated. Quantitative method was applied to study the separated shear flow field. The results show the flow separator changes the downstream shear flow and alters the curvature of separated shear layer As the freestream velocity increased, the reattachment length also increased.

  • Electro-osmotic flow in a PDMS microchannel of $66{\mu}m\;\times\;200{\mu}m\;\times\;3cm$ has been investigated using a micro PIV system. The field of view was $1056{\mu}m\;\times\;200{\mu}m$ and instantaneous velocity fields were obtained using two-frame cross-correlation method with $64\;\times\;64\;pixels^2$ interrogation window. In this study, we focused on the effect of applied electric field on the variation of internal flow with varying the electric field and seeding particles. The electro-osmotic flow shows a flat velocity profile and the mean velocity is proportional to the applied electric field.

  • In this paper, a flow visualization analysis has been carried out on an oscillating square section cylinder, numerically, using a commercially available code CFD-ACE. In this study, the square cylinder is forced to oscillate at different frequencies of excitation, viz., fe/fo=0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 (where, fe is the excitation frequency provided to the cylinder and fo is the natural vortex shedding frequency from the stationary cylinder at a particular Reynolds number (=5200). In all the cases, the peak-to-peak amplitude of oscillation is kept at 32% of the side dimension of the square cylinder. These studies are conducted to understand the influence of frequency of oscillation on the flow field features around the cylinder, particularly the mode of vortex shedding. Results indicate that, the flow field around a square cylinder is very much influenced by the excitation frequency, in particular the vortex shedding mode. It is also found that, the vortex street parameters are significantly influence by the oscillation frequency. Comparison with earlier reported experimental studies has also been attempted in this paper. In appears that, such a numerical exercise (as performed in this paper) is first of its kind. It is believed that, these studies would enable one to understand the mechanisms underlying the flow-induced vibrations of a square section cylinder.

  • The interaction and breakdown of vortices over the Leading Edge Extension (LEX) - Delta wing configuration has been investigated through wing-surface pressure measurements, the off-surface flow visualization, and 5-hole probe measurements of the wing wake section. The description focused on analyzing the interaction and the breakdown of vortices depending on the angle of attack and the sideslip angle. The Effect of angle of attack and sideslip angle on the aerodynamic load characteristics of the model is also presented. The sideslip angle was found to be a very influential parameter of the vortex flow over the LEX-delta wing configuration. The introduction of LEX vortex stabilized the vortex flow, and delayed the vortex breakdown up to a higher angle of attack. The vortex interaction and breakdown was promoted on the windward side, whereas it was suppressed on the leeward side.

  • This paper proposes a design method to provide uniform flow in a microreactor. Uniform momentum approach is adopted with 10 pillars before and after the chamber having a different slope inlet channel. The slope and number of pillars are two factors to make a uniform flow in the microreactor, covering the hexagonal gold layer. The CFD analysis about the designed microreactor is carried out and the velocity vector field measurements are made in the fabricated microreactor by micro PIV technique. The uniformity of microreactor flow was confirmed by both numerical simulation and experimental results.
