Interaction behaviors of high-speed compressible viscous flow and thermal-structural response of structure are presented. The compressible viscous laminar flow behavior based on the Navier-Stokes equations is predicted by using an adaptive cell-centered finite-element method. The energy equation and the quasi-static structural equations for aerodynamically heated structures are solved by applying the Galerkin finite-element method. The finite-element formulation and computational procedure are described. The performance of the combined method is evaluated by solving Mach 4 flow past a flat plate and comparing with the solution from the finite different method. To demonstrate their interaction, the high-speed flow, structural heat transfer, and deformation phenomena are studied by applying the present method to Mach 10 flow past a flat plate.
This paper deals with flow characteristics on the air entrainment and the energy dissipation in nappe flow over the stepped drop structure. Nappe flow occurred at low flow rates and for relatively large step height Dominant flow features include an air pocket, a free-falling nappe impact and a subsequent hydraulic jump on the downstream step. Air entrainment occurred from the step edge, through a free-falling nappe impact and a hydraulic jump. Most energy was dissipated by nappe impact and in the downstream hydraulic jump. It was related with the step height and the overflow depth, but not related with step slope. The stepped drop structure was found to be effcient for water treatment and energy dissipation associated with substantial air entrainment.
In the fully developed pipe flow, when jet is injected in cross to the flow there are complex transition flows caused by interaction of the cross flow and jet. These interactions are studied by means of the flow visualization methods and frequency analysis using a hot-wire anemometer. The velocity range of cross flow of the pipe is 0.3 m/s ~ 1.2 m/s and the corresponding Reynolds number, R$\sub$p/, based on the pipe diameter is 2.25 * 10$\^$3/ ~ 9.02 * 10$\^$3/. The velocity ratio (R), jet velocity/cross flow velocity, is chosen from 2 to 10. A circular cylinder is placed in the pipe instead of jet to observe the vortex shedding from the solid body. To compare the jet and circular cylinder flow, the vortical structure is analyzed in both cases and the structure of vortices and the origin of its formation are investigated, especially. The vortex shedding of the dominant coherent structure is compared between the jet flow and the circular cylinder flow. In the case of the jet flow, the Strouhal numbers are different depending on the existence of the upright vortex as well as the velocity ratio (R).
In this case study, under conideration of field situations, such as increase of water level, height increment of the marine structure, dredging and backfill, the stability analysis of sliding and lateral flow of the marine structure in OOOharbor was carried out, and foundation reinforcement methods was presented. based on the results of site investigation, the stability analysis of slope sliding and lateral flow was performed as following. In section BH-1, 2, the analysis was performed in two cases that the marine structure was heightened and filled, and not heightened and filled. In section BH-1, 4, heightened and filled. The analysis results showed that the stabilities of slope sliding and lateral flow in section BH-1, 2, 3, 4 were unstable. After additional reinforcements with Deep Mortar Pile, the stabilities in section BH-1, 2, 3, 4 were evaluated as efficiently large.
The spanwise flow structure around a rigid smooth circular cylinder model in cross-flow has been investigated based on the experimental data obtained from a series of wind tunnel tests. Surface pressures were collected at five spanwise locations along the cylinder over a Reynolds number range of $1.14{\times}15^5$ to $5.85{\times}10^5$, which covered sub-critical, single-bubble and two-bubble regimes in the critical range. Separation angles were deduced from curve fitted to the surface pressure data. In addition, spanwise correlations and power spectra analyses were employed to study the spatial structure of flow. Results at different spanwise locations show that the transition into single-bubble and two-bubble regimes could occur at marginally different Reynolds numbers which expresses the presence of overlap regions in between the single-bubble regime and its former and later regimes. This indicates the existence of three-dimensional flow around the circular cylinder in cross-flow, which is also supported by the observed cell-like surface pressure patterns. Relatively strong spanwise correlation of the flow characteristics is observed before each transition within the critical regime, or formation of first and second separation-bubbles. It is also noted that these organized flow structures might lead to greater overall aerodynamic forces on a circular cylinder in cross-flow within the critical Reynolds number regime.
A new silicon micro flow sensor with multiple temperature sensing elements was proposed and fabricated in considering wide range flow velocity measuring device. Thermal mass flow sensor measures the asymmetry of temperature profile around the heater which is modulated by the fluid flow. A micro mass flow sensor was normally composed of a central heater and a pair of temperature sensing elements around it. A new 2-D wide range micro flow sensor structure with three pairs of temperature sensing elements and a central heater was proposed and numerically simulated by Finite Difference Formulation to confirm the feasibility of the wide flow range sensor structure. To confirm the simulation result, the new flow sensor was fabricated on silicon substrate and the basic flow sensing properties of the sensor were measured.
The fluid induced vibration (FIV) phenomena of a 2-D.O.F airfoil system have been investigated in low Reynolds number incompressible flow region. Unsteady flows with viscosity are computed using two-dimensional incompressible Navier-stokes code. To validate developed Navier-Stokes code, steady and unsteady flow fields around airfoil are analyzed. The present fluid/structure interaction analysis is based on the most accurate computational approach with computational fluid dynamics (CSD) and computational structural dynamics (CSD) techniques. The highly nonlinear fluid/structure interaction phenomena due to severe flow separations have been analyzed fur the low Reynolds region (R$_{N}$ =500~5000) that has a dominancy of flow viscosity. The effect of R$_{N}$ on the fluid/structure coupled vibration instability of 2-DOF airfoil system is presented and the effect of initial angle of attack on the dynamic instability are also shown.own.
When a secondary gaseous flow is injected vertically into a supersonic flow through circular nozzle, a complicated structure of flow field is produced around the injection area. The interaction between the two streams produces a strong bow shock wane on the upstream side of the side-jet. The results show that bow shock wave and turbulent boundary layer interaction induces the boundary layer separation in front of the side-jet. This study is to analyze the structure of flow fields and distribution of surface pressure on the flat plate according to total pressure ratio using a supersonic cold-flow system and also to study the control force of affected side-jet. The nozzle of main flow was designed to have Mach 2.88 at the exit. The injector has a sonic nozzle with 4mm diameter at the exit of the side-jet. In experiments, The oil flow visualization using a silicone oil and ink was conducted in order to analyze the structure of flow fields around the side-jet. The flow fields are visualized using the schlieren method. In this study, a computational fluid dynamic solution is also compared with experimental results.
Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) has been applied to the Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) data of turbulent channel flow. DWT splits the turbulent flow into two orthogonal parts, one corresponding to coherent structures and the other to incoherent background flow. The coherent structure is extracted from not vorticity field but velocity's since the channel flow is not isoropic. By comparing DWT's result of channel flow with that of isotropic flow, it is shown that coherent structure maintains the properties of original channel flow. The velocity field of coherent structures can be represented by few wavelet modes and that these modes are sufficient to reproduce the velocity probability density function (PDF) and the energy spectrum over the entire inertial range. The remaining incoherent background flow is homogeneous, has small amplitude, and is uncorrelated. These results are compared with those obtained for the same compression rate using large eddy simulation (LES) filtering. In contrast to the incoherent background flow of DWT, the LES subgrid scales have a much larger amplitude and are correlated, which makes their statistical modeling more difficult.
