  • In this study a numerical analysis has been conducted for the flow characteristics and pumping performance of a piezoelectric-based micropump with electromagnetic resistance exerted on electrically conducting fluid. Here, electromagnetic resistance is alternately applied at the inlet and outlet with alternately applied magnetic fields in association with the reciprocal membrane motion of the piezoelectric-based micropump. A model of Prescribed Deformation is used for the description of the membrane motion. The internal flow characteristics and pumping performance are investigated with the variation of magnetic flux density, tube size, displacement of membrane and the frequency of the membrane. It turns out that the current micropump has a wide range of pumping flow rate compared with diffuser-nozzle based micropumps.

  • With its rapid velocity and wide deposition, debris flow is a natural disaster that causes loss of human life and destruction of facility. To design effective debris barriers, impact force of debris flow should be first considered. Debris flow velocity is one of the key features to estimate the impact force of debris flow. In this study, we conducted small-scale flume experiments to analyze flow characteristics of debris flow, and determine flow resistance coefficients with different slope gradients and sediment mixtures. Flow velocity significantly varied with flume slope and mixture type. Debris flow depth decreased as slope increased, but difference in depth between sediment mixtures was not significant. Among flow resistance coefficients, Chezy coefficient ($C_1$) showed not only relatively highest goodness of fit, but also constant value ($20.19m^{-1/2}\;s^{-1}$) regardless the scale of debris flow events. The overall results suggested that $C_1$ can be most appropriately used to estimate flow velocity, the key factor of assessing impact force, in wide range of debris flow scale.

  • The lubrication characteristics of high-speed ball bearings have been investigated empirically using 45mm bore split inner ring ball bearings employed in small industrial gas turbine engines with oil-jet lubrication method. For the close structural simulation, experiments carried out with bearing mounting supports of real engines, such as bearing housings and oil nozzle assemblies with squeeze film dampers. Thus the results of tests can be directly applied to the design and the development of gas turbine engines. Testing was done by varying operating speeds, axial load on bearings, and lubricant flow rates. During testing, the temperature of bearing at outer-ring face, the power consumption of the driving motor, and the rotating resistance of the bearing were measured. From this study, the representative factors for lubrication characteristics at high speed was found, and the most important one was not operating speed but axial load up to 1.95 million dmN speed and 2969 N axial load. Furthermore, the detailed variation of the rotational resistance of the bearing could be visualized by measuring the change of the radial load under the bearing supports. The rotational resistance consists of the frictional resistance and the bearing-cavity oil resistance.

  • Hydraulic engineers and scientists working on river restoration recognize the need for a deeper understanding of natural streams as a complex and dynamic system, which involves not only abiotic elements(flow, sediments) but also biotic components. From this point of view, the role played by riverine vegetation dynamics and flow conditions becomes essential. Hydro-mechanic interaction between flow and flexible plants covering a river bed is studied in this paper and some previous works are discussed. Measurements of turbulence and flow resistance in vegetated open channel were performed using rigid and flexible tube. Measuring detailed turbulent velocity profiles within and above submerged and flexible stems allowed to distinguish different turbulent regimes. Some interesting relationships were obtained between the velocity field and the deflected height of the plants, such as a reduced drag coefficient in the flexible stems. Turbulent intensities and Reynolds stresses were measured showing two different regions : above and inside the vegetation domain. In flexible vegetated open channel, the maximum values of turbulent intensities and Reynolds stresses appear above the top of canopy. Method to predict a flow resistance in flexible vegetated open channel is developed by modifying an analytical model proposed by Klopstra et al. (1997). Calculated velocity profiles and roughness values correspond well with flume experiments. These confirm the applicability of the presented model for open channel with flexible vegetation. The new method will be verified in the real vegetated conditions in the near future. After these verifications, the new method should be applied for nature rehabilitation projects such as river restorations.

  • Proper modelling of the basal resistance terms is key in simulating the motion of fluidized granular flow. In this paper, standard depth-averaged governing equations of granular flow are used together with the classical Coulomb, Voellmy, and velocity dependent friction models (VDFM). A high-resolution modified TVDLF method is implemented to solve the partial differential equations without numerical oscillations. The effects of basal resistance terms on the motion of granular flows such as geometric shape evolution, travel times and final deposits are analyzed. Based on the numerical results, the predictions of the front and rear end positions and developing length of granular flow with Coulomb friction model show excellent agreements with experiment results reported by Hutter et al. (1995), and illustrate the validity of the numerical approach. For the Voellmy model, the higher value of turbulent coefficient than reality may obtain more reasonable predicted runout for the small-scale avalanche or granular flow. The energy exchange laws indicate that VDFM is different from the Coulomb and Voellmy models, although the flow characteristics of both three models fit the measurements and observations very well.

  • Contacts formed by vacuum evaporation of As-Te-Si-Ge chalcogenide glass onto Al metal (99.9999%) are studied by measuring paralle capacitance C(V), Cp(w), resistance R(V), Rp(w), and I-V characteristics. The fact that contact metal alloying produced high-resistance region is confirmed from the measurements of parallel capacitance and resistance. From the I-V characteristics in the pre-switcing region, it is found that electronic conduction and sitching occurs in the vicinity of metal-amorphous semiconductor interface. From the experimental obsevations, it is concuded that the current flow in the thin film is space-charge limited current (SCLC) due to the tunneling of electrons through the energy barriers.

  • A numerical analysis has been conducted for flow characteristics and performance of a micropump with piezodisk and MHD(Magnetohydrodynamics) fluid. Various micro systems which could not be considered in the past have been recently growing with the development of MEMS(Micro Electro Mechanical System) and micro machining technology. Especially, micropumps, essential part of micro fluidic devices, are being lively studies by many researchers. In the present study, the piezo electric micropump with electromagnetic resistance for electrically conducting fluids is considered. The prescribed grid deformation method is used for the displacement of the membrane. The change of the performance of the micropump and flow characteristics of the electrically conducting fluid with the magnitude of the magnetic fields, duct size, the position of the inlet and outlet duct are investigated in the present study.

  • A numerical investigation has been carried out for the flow characteristics after exchange of some filters from the original layer to the new low pressure loss layer with equal filtering efficiency. The solution domain includes upper plenum, filter layer, clean space, access panels, and lower plenum. The concept of the distributed pressure resistance was applied to describe the momentum loss in filter layer and access panels. The evolution of the flow field is simulated using the low Reynolds number k-.epsilon. over bar turbulent model and SIMPLE algorithm based on the finite volume method. As a result, after the exchange of filter layer the power requirement can be reduced by 8-9 percent. The results also demonstrate that the perpendicularity of the flow near access panels may become worse at new filter layer than origianl filter layer. But the situation can be recovered by adjusting the jopening ratio of access panels.

  • On the basis of flow resistance theory the conceptual model and related mathematical descriptions is proposed for resistance modeling of groundwater flow in CPM(continuum Porous medium), DFN(discrete fracture network) and fractured-porous medium. The proposed model is developed on the basis of finite volume method assuming steady-state, constant density groundwater flow. The basic approach of the method is to evaluate inter-block flow resistance values for a staggered grid arrangement, i.e. fluxes are stored at cell walls and scalars at cell centers. The balance of forces, i.e. the Darcy law, is utilized for each control volume centered around the point where the velocity component is stored. The transmissivity (or permeability) at the interface is assumed to be the harmonic average of neighboring blocks. Flow resistance theory was utilized to relate the fluxes between the grid blocks with residual pressures. The flow within porous medium is described by three dimensional equations and that within an individual fracture is described by a two dimensional equivalent of the flow equations for a porous medium. Newly proposed models would contribute to develop flow simulation techniques with various matrix characteristics.

  • Loop thermosyphon(LTS) has many good characteristics such as low thermal resistance, no power consumption, noiseless operation and small size. To investigate the overall performance of LTS, we have performed various experiments varying three parameters: input power of the heater, working fluid(water, ethanol, FC3283) and filling ratio of the working fluid. At a combination of these parameters, temperature measurements are made at many locations of the LTS. The temperature difference between the evaporator and the condenser is used to obtain the thermal resistance. In addition, flow visualization using a high speed camera is carried out. The thermal resistance is not constant. It is lower at higher input power, which is one of the distinct merits of LTS. Flow instabilities are frequently observed when changing the working fluid, the input power and the filling ratio. The results show that the LTS can be readily put into practical use. Future practical application in electronic cooling is recommended.
