The characteristics of flow around a single obstacle with fixed height and varied length and width are numerically investigated using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. As the obstacle length increases, flow distortion near the upwind side of the obstacle increases and the size of the recirculation zone behind the obstacle also increases. As the obstacle width increases, the size of the recirculation zone decreases, despite almost invariable flow distortion near the upwind side of the obstacle. Flow passing through an obstacle is separated, one part going around the obstacle and the other crossing over the obstacle. The size of the recirculation zone is determined by the distance between the obstacle and the point (reattachment point) at which both the flows converge. When the obstacle width is relatively large, flows are reattached at the obstacle surface and their recoveries occur. Resultant shortening of the paths of flows crossing over and going around decreases the size of the recirculation zone. To support this, the extent of flow distortion defined based on the change in wind direction is analyzed. The result shows that flow distortion is largest near the ground surface and decreases with height. An increase in obstacle length increases the frontal area fraction of flow distortion around the obstacle. In the cases of increasing the width, the frontal area fraction near the upwind side of the obstacle does not change much, but near the downwind side, it becomes larger as the width increases. The frontal area fraction is in a better correlation with the size of the recirculation zone than the building aspect ratios, suggesting that the frontal area fraction is a good indicator for explaining the variation in the size of the recirculation zone with the building aspect ratios.
The wind flow over two-dimensional sinusoidal hilly obstacles with slope (the ratio of height to half width) of 0.5 has been investigated experimentally and numerically. Experiments for single and double sinusoidal hill models were carried out in a subsonic wind tunnel. The mean velocity profiles, turbulence statistics, and surface pressure distributions were measured at the Reynolds number based on the obstacle height(h=40 mm) of $2.6{\times}10^4$. The reattachment points behind the obstacles were determined using the oil-ink dot and tuft methods. The smoke-wire method was employed to visualize the flow structure qualitatively. The finite-volume-method and the SIMPLE-C algorithm with an orthogonal body-fitted grid were used for numerical simulation. Comparison of mean velocity profiles between the experiments and the numerical simulation shows a good agreement except for the separation region, however, the surface pressure data show almost similar distributions.
An air-water free surface flow simulation by using the Lattice Boltzmann Method(LBM) has not been studied a lot compared with the done by the Navier-Stoke equation. This paper shows the LBM is as one of the application tools for the free surface movement over an obstacle. The Mezo scaled application tool has been developed with two dimensional and nine discretized velocity direction using conventional lattice Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook model. Boundary conditions of a halfway-based for solid wall and a kinematic-based for interface are adopted. A validation case with a trapezoidal shape bump to make a comparison between freesurface movements from computational results and experimental ones was described with grid size dependency.
The interdecadal variation of wintertime blocking frequency over the Siberia ($60^{\circ}E-140^{\circ}E$) is examined using the ECMWF/NCEP-NCAR re-analysis data for the period 1958-2006. The wintertime blocking frequency over the Siberia significantly decreased for the period 1986-2006, compared to the period 1958-1985, which is mainly due to the anomalous circulation of 500-hPa geopotential height field. During the period 1986-2006, there was enhancement in both the anomalous cyclonic flow over the western Siberia and the anomalous anticyclonic flow over the east Asia. These anomalous circulation patterns, which might be associated with changes in surface temperatures over the Asian continent, are suspected to playa possibly important role as an obstacle to the formation of blocking flow over the Siberia.
The flowfield generated by a 2-D rotating cylinder on a plane moving at freestream velocity was experimentally investigated in a wind tunnel to simulate aerodynamic characteristics of rotating wheels of an automobile. In the flowfield around a rotating cylinder at 3*10$^{3}$ < Re$_{d}$<8*10$^{3}$, unique mean flow and turbulence characteristics were confirmed by hot-wire measurements as well as frequency analysis, which was supported by flow visualization. In the vicinity of a rotating cylinder, a unique turbulence structure on .root.over bar u'$^{2}$ profiles was formed in hump-like shape at 1 < y/d < 3. A peak frequency which characterized the effect of a rotating cylinder had the same value of the rotation rate of a cylinder. In case of cylinder rotation, the depths of mean velocity -defect and turbulent-shear regions were thickened by 20-40% at 0 < x/d < 10 compared with the case of cylinder stationary. Far downstream beyond x/d > 10, the flowfield generated by a rotating cylinder showed self-similarity in the profiles of mean velocity and turbulence quantities. The effect of a rotating cylinder was independent of its rotation rate and Reynolds number in the measurement range.
Large-eddy simulation has been conducted to simulate turbulent boundary-layer flows over an array of regularly distributed obstacles considering various cases of a wind incident angle. The effect of wind direction was investigated in the square cube array that periodic boundary condition was imposed. Characteristics of the turbulent flow over the obstacle array have been found to be very sensitive to the direction of prevailing wind or of mean wind or of mean pressure gradient but varied with height, specially below the urban canopy. Turbulent statistics are changed sensitively with the direction of mean pressure gradient around 10 degree.
A primary benefit of flight at high angle-of-attack conditions is to be able to reduce the speed of flight and maneuvers, which can enhance the capability of sensing and obstacle avoidance for a small UAV. The flight at high angle-of-attack conditions, however, is easy to be beyond stall which is characterized by substantial flow separation over an airfoil. Current numerical analysis was conducted on the capabilities of three representative turbulence models to predict the aerodynamic characteristics of a typical airfoil at angle-of-attack conditions. The investigation shows that these turbulence models provide good comparison with experimental data for attached flow at moderate angle-of-attack conditions. Calculation by current turbulence models are, however, not appropriate at high angle-of-attack conditions with flow separation.
A modified k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model having a generality is proposed in the present study, in which the constant $C_{\varepsilon2}$in the $\varepsilon$-equation is simply changed as a functional form of a new parameter both satisfying the tensor invariant condition and representing the extra straining effect on complex shear flows. With this model turbulent shear flows over two-dimensional obstacles placed in a channel are numerically studied for different blockage ratios and aspect ratios. Comparing with the available experimental data, the predicted results with the present model provide definite improvements over the standard model's results and work fairly well with the experimental data on the size of the recirculation zone, as well as mean velocity, wall static pressure, turbulent kinetic energy and Reynolds stresses.
An experimental study of the skin friction measurement in a turbulent boundary-layer has been carried out. The skin friction measurements are made using the laser interferometer skin friction (LISF) meter, which optically detects the rate of thinning of an oil applied to the test surface. This technique produces reliable skin friction data over a wide range of flow situations up to 3-dimensional complicated flows with separation, where traditional skin friction measurement techniques are not applicable. The present measured data in a turbulent boundary-layer on a flat plate using the LISF technique shows a good comparison with the result from the previous velocity profile techniques, which proves the validity of the present technique. An extensive error analysis is carried out for the present technique yielding an uncertainty of about .+-.8%, which makes them suitable for CFD code validation purposes. Finally the measurements of the skin friction in a separated region after a surface-mounted obstacle are also presented.
An immersed boundary method for simulation of density-stratified flows is developed and applied to computation of viscous flows over two-dimensional obstacles in a bounded domain under stable density stratification. Density sources/sinks are introduced on the body surface. Two obstacle shapes are used, a vertical barrier and a smooth cosine-shaped hill; weak stratification, defined by $K=ND/{\pi}U{\leq}1$, where U, N, and D are the upstream velocity, buoyancy frequency, and domain height, respectively, is considered. The results are consistent with other authors' calculations, and shed light on computation of density-stratified flows in complex geometries.
