This paper presents an optimal design of magnetorheological (MR) fluid based mount (MR mount in short) which can be applicable to vibration control of diesel engine of ship. In this work, a mixed - mode including squeeze mode, flow mode and shear mode is proposed and designed. In order to determine actuating damping force of MR mount required for efficient vibration control, excitation force from diesel engine is analyzed. In this analysis, a model of V-type engine is considered and the relationship between velocity and pressure of gas in torque of the piston is derived. Subsequently, by integrating the field-dependent rheological properties of commercially available MR fluid with the excitation force an appropriate size of MR mount is designed. In addition, in order to achieve maximum actuating force with geometric constraints design optimization is undertaken using ANSYS software. Through the magnetic density analysis, optimal design parameters such as bottom gap and radius of coil are determined.
High levels of ambient noise and safety factors often limit the use of 'active-source' seismic methods for geotechnical investigations in urban environments. As an alternative, shear-wave velocity-depth profiles can be obtained by treating the background microtremor wave field as a stochastic process, rather than adopting the traditional approach of calculating velocity based on ray path geometry from a known source. A recent field test in Melbourne demonstrates the ability of the microtremor method, using only Rayleigh waves, to resolve a velocity inversion resulting from the presence of a hard, 12 m thick basalt flow overlying 25 m of softer alluvial sediments and weathered mudstone. Normally the presence of the weaker underlying sediments would lead to an ambiguous or incorrect interpretation with conventional seismic refraction methods. However, this layer of sediments is resolved by the microtremor method, and its inclusion is required in one-dimensional layered-earth modelling in order to reproduce the Rayleigh-wave coherency spectra computed from observed seismic noise records. Nearby borehole data provided both a guide for interpretation and a confirmation of the usefulness of the passive Rayleigh-wave microtremor method. Sensitivity analyses of resolvable modelling parameters demonstrate that estimates of shear velocities and layer thicknesses are accurate to within approximately $10\%\;to\;20\%$ using the spatial autocorrelation (SPAC) technique. Improved accuracy can be obtained by constraining shear velocities and/or layer thicknesses using independent site knowledge. Although there exists potential for ambiguity due to velocity-thickness equivalence, the microtremor method has significant potential as a site investigation tool in situations where the use of traditional seismic methods is limited.
A multi-objective optimization of a regenerative fan for enhancing the aerodynamic and aeroacoustic performance was carried out using an integrated fan design system, namely, Total FAN-Regen$^{(R)}$. The Total FAN-Regen$^{(R)}$ was developed for non-specialists to carry out a series of design process, viz., computational preliminary design, three-dimensional aerodynamic and aeroacoustic analyses, and design optimization, for a regenerative fan. An aerodynamic analysis of the regenerative fan was conducted by solving three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations using the shear stress transport turbulence model. And, an aeroacoustic analysis of the regenerative fan was implemented in a finite/infinite element method by solving the variational formulation of Lighthill's analogy based on the results of the unsteady flow analysis. An optimum shape obtained by Total FAN-Regen$^{(R)}$ shows the enhanced efficiency and decreased sound pressure level as much as 1.5 % and 20.0 dB, respectively, compared to those of the reference design. The performance test was carried out for an optimized regenerative fan to validate the performance of the numerically predicted optimal design.

This study is performed to evaluate the physical and mechanical characteristics of an acryl polymer concrete that is developed as an overlay material for cement concrete slabs and pavements. Various laboratory tests including viscosity, flow, compressive strength, flexural strength, tensile strength, linear shrinkage, thermal expansion and thermal compatibility tests are performed. It is observed from the laboratory tests that the acryl polymer concrete developed in this study satisfies all the requirements suggested by ACI guideline. In addition to the laboratory tests, an accelerated performance testing (APT) is conducted to validate the performance of the acryl polymer concrete. During the APT, no significant distresses are observed until 15,903,939 cycles of equivalent single axle loading is applied. Finally, a 10mm thick overlay with the acryl polymer concrete is applied on top of an old deteriorated concrete pavement to evaluate field performance. Right after the field construction, skid resistance, noise and roughness are measured. The skid resistance and noise level have been significantly improved while the roughness is increased. Periodic investigation for the field study section will be conducted to evaluate the long-term performance.

In this paper, the aerodynamic and aeroacoustic characteristics that vary depending on the rotation axial distance between the upper and lower rotor, which is one of the design parameters of the coaxial rotor, is analyzed in the hovering condition using the computational fluid dynamics. Aerodynamic analysis using the Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes equation and the aeroacoustic analysis using the Ffowcs Williams ans Hawkings equation is performed and the results were compared. The upper and lower rotor of the coaxial rotor have different phase angle which changes periodically by rotation and have unsteady characteristics. As the distance between the upper and lower rotors increased, the aerodynamic efficiency of the thrust and the torque was increased as the flow interaction decreased. In the aeroacoustic viewpoint, the noise characteristics radiated in the direction of the rotational plane showed little effect by axis spacing. In the vertical downward direction of the axis increased, the SPL maintains its size as the frequency increases, which affects the increase in the OASPL. As the axial distance of the coaxial rotor increased, the noise characteristics of a coaxial rotor were similar with the single rotor and the SPL decreased significantly.

Thermal protection system structures such as double-panel structures are used on the skin of the fuselage and wings to prevent the transfer of high heat into the interior of an high supersonic/hypersonic aircraft. The thin-walled double-panel skin can be exposed to acoustic loads by high power engine noise and jet flow noise, which can cause sonic fatigue damage. In order to predict the fatigue life of the skin, the octave bandwidth SPL should be calculated as narrow bandwidth PSD or acoustic load history using interpolation method. In this paper, a method of converting the octave bandwidth SPL acoustic load into a narrow bandwidth PSD and reconstructed acoustic load history was investigated. The octave bandwidth SPL was converted to the narrow bandwidth PSD using various interpolation methods such as flat, log and linear scale, and the probabilistic characteristics and fatigue damage results were compared. It was found that average error of fatigue damage index by the log scale interpolation method was relatively small among three methods.
In this study, data analysis has been conducted by INFINITT program to analyze the effect of signal to noise ratio(SNR) and contrast to noise ratio(CNR) of flow related enhancement(FRE) and computed tomography Angiography(CTA) on cerebrovascular diseases for qualitative evaluations. Based on the cerebrovascular image results achieved from 63 patients (January to April, 2017, at C University Hospital), we have selected 19 patients that performed both FRE-MRA and CTA. From the 19 patients, 2 were excluded due to artifacts from movements in the cerebrovascular image results. For the analysis conditions, we have set the 5 part (anterior cerebral artery, right and left Middle cerebral artery, right and left Posterior cerebral artery) as the interest area to evaluate the SNR and CNR, and the results were validated through Independence t Test. As a result, by averaging the SNR, and CNR values, the corresponding FRE-MRA achieved were: anterior cerebral artery ($1500.73{\pm}12.23/970.43{\pm}14.55$), right middle cerebral artery ($1470.16{\pm}11.46/919.44{\pm}13.29$), left middle cerebral artery ($1457.48{\pm}17.11/903.96{\pm}14.53$), right posterior cerebral artery ($1385.83{\pm}16.52/852.11{\pm}14.58$), left posterior cerebral artery ($1318.52{\pm}13.49/756.21{\pm}10.88$). by averaging the SNR, and CNR values, the corresponding CTA achieved were: anterior cerebral artery ($159.95{\pm}12.23/123.36{\pm}11.78$), right middle cerebral artery ($236.66{\pm}17.52/202.37{\pm}15.20$), left middle cerebral artery ($224.85{\pm}13.45/193.14{\pm}11.88$), right posterior cerebral artery ($183.65{\pm}13.47/151.44{\pm}11.48$), left posterior cerebral artery ($177.7{\pm}16.72/144.71{\pm}11.43$) (p < 0.05). In conclusion, MRA had high SNR and CNR value regardless of the cerebral infarction or cerebral hemorrhage observed in the 5 part of the brain. Although FRE-MRA consumed longer time, it proved to have less side effect of contrast media when compared to the CTA.
Surface image velocimetry was introduced as an efficient and sage alternative to conventional river flow measurement methods during floods. The conventional surface image velocimetry uses a pair of images to estimate velocity fields using cross-correlation analysis. This method is appropriate to analyzing images taken with a short time interval. It, however, has some drawbacks; it takes a while to analyze images for the verage velocity of long time intervals and is prone to include errors or uncertainties due to flow characteristics and/or image taking conditions. Methods using spatio-temporal images, called STIV, were developed to overcome the drawbacks of conventional surface image velocimetry. The grayscale-gradient tensor method, one of various STIVs, has shown to be effectively reducing the analysis time and is fairly insusceptible to any measurement noise. It, unfortunately, can only be applied to the main flow direction. This means that it can not measure any two-dimensional flow field, e.g. flow in the vicinity of river structures and flow around river bends. The present study aimed to develop a new method of analyzing spatio-temporal images in two-dimension using cross-correlation analysis. Unlike the conventional STIV, the developed method can be used to measure two-dimensional flow substantially. The method also has very high spatial resolution and reduces the analysis time. A verification test using artificial images with lid-driven cavity flow showed that the maximum error of the method is less than 10 % and the average error is less than 5 %. This means that the developed scheme seems to be fairly accurate, even for two-dimensional flow.
The flows around a high speed train are very important because they could affect the aerodynamic characteristics such as drag and acoustic noise. Especially the boundary layer of flows could represent the characteristic of flows around the high speed train. Most previous studies have focused on the boundary layer region along the train length direction for the side of the train and underbody. The measurement and analysis of the boundary layer for the roof side is also very important because it could determine the flow inlet condition for the pantograph. In this study, the roof boundary layer was measured with a 1/20 scaled model of the next generation high speed train, and the results were compared with full-scaled computational fluid dynamics results to confirm their validity. As a result, it was confirmed that the flow inlet condition for the pantograph is about 85% of the train speed. Additionally, the characteristics of the boundary layer, which increases along the train direction, was also analyzed.
