  • A computerized axial flow fan design system is developed with the capabilities for predicting the aerodynamic performance and the noise characteristics of fan. In the present study, the basic fan blading design is made by combining vortex distribution scheme with camber line design, airfoil selection, blade thickness distribution and stacking of blade elements. With the designed fan blade geometry, the through-flow field and the performance of fan are analyzed by using the streamline curvature computing scheme with spanwise total pressure loss and flow deviation models. Fan noise is assumed to be generated due to the pressure fluctuation induced by wake vortices of fan blades and to radiate as dipole distribution. The vortex-induced fluctuating pressure on blade surface is calculated by combining thin airfoil theory and the predicted flow field data. The predicted performances, sound pressure level and noise directivity patterns of fan by the present method are favorably compared with the test data of actual fans. Furthermore, the present method is shown to be very useful in designing the blade geometry of new fan and optimizing design variables of the fan to achieve higher efficiency and lower noise level.

  • Centrifugal pump are widely used and the noise generated by these machines causes one of the most serious problems. In general, the centrifugal pump noise is often dominated by tones at BPF(blade passage frequency) and its higher harmonics. This is a consequence of the strong interaction between the flow discharged from the impeller and the cutoff in the casing. However, only a few researches have been carried out on predicting the noise because of the difficulty in obtaining detailed information about the flow field and casing effects on noise radiation. The objective of this study is to develop a prediction method for the unsteady flow field and the acoustic pressure field of a centrifugal pump, and to calculate the effects of small vanes that are attached in original impeller-splitter impeller. We assume that the impeller rotates with a constant angular velocity and the flow field around the impeller is incompressible and inviscid. So, a discrete vortex method(DVM) is used to model the centrifugal pump and to calculate the flow field. The force of each element on the blade is calculated by the unsteady Bernoulli equation. Lowson's method is used to predict the acoustic source. The splitter impeller changes the acoustic characteristics as well as performance. Two-splitter type impeller is good for acoustic characteristics.

  • In the Over-The-Range, the outlet size is limited by the industrial standards. Therefor to enlarge the volume of cavity, the installation height of ventilation fan is become small, the system resistance is higher than before. For that reason, the important design variables such as the diameter of a fan, the scroll expansion angle, etc. which play the significant role on flow rate and noise, are confined. In this study, we made an experiment of the diameter of fans relation to scroll expansion angle and investigated flow rate of the length of fans in enlarged cavity volume of OTR, and then we designed the new scroll to improve the flow rate and noise level. As a result, flow rate increased to 110% compared to current scroll and the blade passing frequency of a fan is disappeared by inclined cut-off shapes.

  • The cross-flow fans have been widely used to constitute the air moving systems in many air-ventilating and air-conditioning devices. The cross-flow fan system has many design parameters which have crucial influence on the performance and the noise characteristics of the devices. As a result, there are many difficulties in the design stage of the devices and the general design guide has not been sufficiently established yet. This study presents the experimental results of the parametric investigation of some chosen design parameters, which are the shape of the stabilizer, the profile of the scroll casing, and the diffusion angle of the flow exit. The results are expressed as the fan performance and the specific sound pressure level characteristic. These parts have been found to have crucial effects on the system performance/noise characteristics and should be considered with care in the design stage.

  • When a flow passes a series of parallel ones, vortexes will be formed in the wake after the cylinder. This paper treats the problems of vibration and noise in tube bank of gas flow duct of heat exchanger thermal suppling boiler in combine cycle thermal power plants. The boiler burner type has recently been changed to low Nox burner and begun commercial operation. After more load up operation then 70%, high level noise and vibration were generated at gas flow duct of heat exchanger.

  • Propeller fans are commonly equipped in outdoor units of air-conditioners to provide effective cooling in a dried heat exchanger. A new design technique was developed to satisfy requirements of aerodynamic and aeroacoustic performance, which employs the intersection method of two cylinders for mean camber line. Three proto-types of propeller fan including Palm-Shaped, Highly-Swept(PSHS) fan (proto 3)were not only to provide low lift forces for dipole sound, but also to reduce the organized tip vortices interacting with the fan guide causing narrow-banded rotating instabilities. Cross-correlation technique was applied to study flow noise source characteristics for three proto-type fans designed. The cross-correlations between a microphone at far field and a hot-wire sensor at near field show that flows near hub region of proto 3 fan are less organized and the flow structures especially at high flow rate coefficients for proto 3 fan are less correlated with noise generated than other proto-types fans.

  • The present study describes the prediction of the flow induced noise level of a high-speed rotating hexagonal disk and proposes the way how to reduce it. Since a hexagonal disk, which is used in the laser printer and named a Polygon mirror, has six sharp corners, there are low and high pressure regions on each of six edges when it rotates. Therefore, the pressure difference generates three dimension flow field and causes aerodynamic noise. The Ffowcs-Williams and Hawkings (FWH) method is employed for the analysis. We have measured the sound pressure levels and compared them with the computational results. The calculated sound pressure levels agree well with the experimental results. We modified the shape of the edges of a hexagonal disk to reduce the noise level and confirm their effects through numerical computation.

  • An alternator which converts mechanical rotating energy into electric energy is an important component of a vehicle. It operates in broad range from 3000 RPM to 18000 RPM. So, sufficient flow rate and low noise are needed in such broad operating range for a cooling fan of this alternator. In current study, the cooling fan of an alternator is developed through DFSS process and numerical analysis. In order to calculate flow rate and noise level, SC/Tetra and FlowNoise S/W are used respectively, for a new developed fan, compared with original model, numerical result shows 3 dBA reduction and measured value shows 4 dBA reduction.

  • Present paper deals with turbulence-airfoil interaction noise and mainly investigates the effects of airfoil thickness on the broadband noise spectrum. The acoustic power radiation from an airfoil is predicted using high-order time-domain method, which is based on the computational aeroacoustic technique solving the linear Euler equations. The homogeneous and isotropic turbulence is generated by utilizing the synthetic turbulence modeling based on random particle method. The airfoils taken into consideration are a flat-plate and a NACA0012 airfoil aligned with uniform mean flow. The effects of airfoil thickness on the radiated inflow turbulence noise are investigated by comparing acoustic power spectrum predicted for each airfoil. The comparison of acoustic power spectrum reveals that the airfoil thickness significantly contributes the high frequency noise reduction.
