This study observed the meterological influence on the excess attenuation with various flow resistivities. The flow resistivity is simulated up to 30, 000 cgs rayls. There is no significant differences among results from spherical wave analysis for excess attenuation, from plane wave analysis, and from locally reacting analysis. This is validated only when the flow resistivity is more than 100 cgs rayls. For the determination of effective flow resistivity of ground by measuring the excess attenuation experimentally, it is highly recommended that the distance between source and receiver is about 2.5m, and that the height of them is 0.3-0.4 m in case that they have the same height. Under this proposed conditions, the flow resistivity of 6-month-passed asphalt ground is estimated to 5, 000 cgs rayls by comparing the measured excess attenuation with the calculated.

To propose a useful modelling method for an actual muffler, the noise attenuation effects of muffler was investigated according to the flow condition and the hole shape of tubes. In this work, the finite element method was used to calculate the transmission loss of muffler, The noise attenuation characteristics of four different types of muffler in the hole shape of tubes were compared mutually to find a more simple equivalent model. Analytical results showed that the overall value of transmission loss increases and the peaks of transmission loss curve shift to the low frequency with mean flow for the given muffler, Also the noise attenuation characteristics of the equivalent model having the split holes is almost the same as those of the actual muffler having many circular holes.

The particle amount monitoring technique using ultrasound is proposed to determine the proper maintenance time of the filter in the supply process of pure gas in the unit of oxygen plant. There are advantages that it is adaptable in high temperature and high pressure, and it is not disturbed by being exposed in the gas flow, and it can be implemented very economically. The applicability of the ultrasonic technique is pre-studied through the theoretical analysis for the dependency of attenuation of ultrasonic wave on the particles in the gas flow. For the purpose, absorption, scattering and dispersion models are considered, and the attenuation by absorption and the change rate of the propagation speed are calculated fur the specific range of particle size and the ultrasonic wave frequency. It was expected by simulation that the absorptive attenuation by particles was the most sensitive to the change of particle amount. The experimental result showed high correspondence with the theoretical expectation so that this ultrasound attenuation measurement was proved to be highly effective for monitoring the amount of floating particles in the gas flow.
The paper studies the dispersion and attenuation of propagating waves in the "plate+compressible viscous fluid layer" system in the case where the fluid layer flow is restricted with a rigid wall, and in the case where the fluid layer has a free face. The motion of the plate is described by the exact equations of elastodynamics and the flow of the fluid by the linearized Navier-Stokes equations for compressible barotropic Newtonian viscous fluids. Analytical expressions are obtained for the amplitudes of the sought values, and the dispersion equation is derived using the corresponding boundary and compatibility conditions. To find the complex roots of the dispersion equation, an algorithm based on equating the modulus of the dispersion determinant to zero is developed. Numerical results on the dispersion and attenuation curves for various pairs of plate and fluid materials under different fluid layer face conditions are presented and discussed. Corresponding conclusions on the influence of the problem parameters on the dispersion and attenuation curves are made and, in particular, it is established that the change of the free face boundary condition with the impermeability condition can influence the dispersion and attenuation curves not only in the quantitative, but also in the qualitative sense.

This paper aims to suggest the water curtain installation guideline for prevention of fire spread. The water curtain systems play a role in preventing fire spread which is caused by fire flames and radiation heat release from a fire source. The radiation attenuation ratio is affected by the water droplet size, vertical distance from the nozzle and flow rate. This study suggests the water curtain installation guideline as follows : (1) Investigation of a reference store array (2) Calculation of the number of drencher heads (3) Review of the relationship between droplet size and attenuation factor depending on the height of the drencher head (4) Review of a drencher head array and spray overlapping. The reference traditional market in which a fire compartment is installed using a water curtain can be predicted to have a radiation attenuation ratio of 50%.
In vehicle exhaust systems the sound attenuation and the reduction of flow losses are often two competing demands. The present study considers a fully vehicle exhaust system and investigates experimentally both the sound attenuation and the flow performance of production configurations including the catalyst, the resonator, and the muffler. Dynamometer experiments have been This study is on the development of a new muffler composed of a valve system using an elasticity of spring. The valve system conducted with the daewoo 1500cc Lanos engine with speeds ranging from 1000 to 5000 rpm. Measurements include the flow rates, the temperatures and the absolute dynamic pressures of the hot exhaust gases at point locations. The present study describes the experimental aspects of an ongoing effort to validate and use the nonlinear fluid dynamic models in the time-domain for the prediction of the acoustic and power performance of firing internal combustion engines with full production exhaust systems.

Void fraction is an important parameter in the oil industry. This quantity is necessary for volume rate measurement in multiphase flows. In this study, the void fraction percentage was estimated precisely, independent of the flow regime in gas-liquid two-phase flows by using ${\gamma}-ray$ attenuation and a multilayer perceptron neural network. In all previous studies that implemented a multibeam ${\gamma}-ray$ attenuation technique to determine void fraction independent of the flow regime in two-phase flows, three or more detectors were used while in this study just two NaI detectors were used. Using fewer detectors is of advantage in industrial nuclear gauges because of reduced expense and improved simplicity. In this work, an artificial neural network is also implemented to predict the void fraction percentage independent of the flow regime. To do this, a multilayer perceptron neural network is used for developing the artificial neural network model in MATLAB. The required data for training and testing the network in three different regimes (annular, stratified, and bubbly) were obtained using an experimental setup. Using the technique developed in this work, void fraction percentages were predicted with mean relative error of <1.4%.
Background :To assess the accuracy of Electron-Beam Tomography(EBT) in following evaluation of the pulmonary vascular system after a shunt operation in the cyanotic con-genital heart disease with pulmonary stenosis or pulmonary atresia. Material and Method : Sixteen patients(M:F=11:5) who received Blalock-Taussig(n=8) bidirectional cavo-pulmonary shunt(n=10) and unifocalization (n=2) were ncluded in the study. We evaluated the patency of the shunt the morphology of intrapericardial and hilar pulmonary arteries(PA) peripheral pulmonary vascularity by background lung attenuation and the abundance of arterial & venous collateral. Angiography(n=12) and echocardiography(n=20) were used as the gold standard for the comparison of EBT results. Result: EBT was consistent with angiogram/ echo in 100% of the evaluation for the patency of the shunt and in 12(by angiogram 100%) and 19(by echo 95%) for the detection the hypoplasia stenosis or interruption of central PA In measuring of PA EBT and angiogram corrlated(r=0.91) better than EBT-echo(r=0.88) or echo-angiogram(r=0.72) Abundant systemic arterial collateral were noted in 4 and venous collateral in 3 cases. In evaluating the peripheral pulmonary vascularity the homogenous and normal-ranged lung attenuation(m=6) decreased but homo-genous attenuation(n=1) segment-by-sgment heterogeneous attenuation(n=3) homogenous but asymmetrical attenuation(n=3) segment-by-segment heterogeneous attenuation(n=3) homogenous but asymmetrical attenuation(n=3) and venous congestion(n=2) were observed nd 12 of them were compatible with the blood flow pattern revealed by cardiac catheterization. Conclusion: EBT was accurate in the integrated evaluation of the pulmonary vascular system after the shunt including the patency of the shunt operaion the morphology and dimension of the central and hilar PAs and the loco-regional pulmonary flow in the lung parenchyma. It suggests the useful information about the need of secondary shunt operation the proper timing time for total repair and the need of interventional procedure prior to total repair.

A compression wave is attenuated or distorted as it propagates in a tube. The present study investigated the propagation characteristics of the compression waves which are generated by a train in a high-speed railway tunnel. A Total Variation Diminishing (TVD) difference scheme was applied to one-dimensional, unsteady viscous compressible flow. The numerical calculation involved the effects of wall friction, heat transfer and energy loss due to the friction heat in the boundary layer behind the propagating compression wave, and compared with the measurement results of a shock tube and a real tunnel. The present results show that attenuation of the compression wave in turbulent boundary layer is stronger than in laminar boundary layer, but nonlinear effect of the compression wave is greater in the laminar boundary layer. The energy loss due to the frictional heat had not influence on attenuation and distortion of the propagating compression waves.
To properly manage and remediate groundwater contaminated with chlorinated hydrocarbons such as trichloroethylene (TCE), it is necessary to assess natural attenuation processes of contaminants in the aquifer along with investigation of contamination history and aquifer characterization. This study evaluated natural attenuation processes of TCE at an industrial site in Korea by delineating hydrogeochemical characteristics along the flow path of contaminated groundwater, by calculating reaction rate constants for TCE and its degradation products, and by using geochemical and reactive transport modeling. The monitoring data showed that TCE tended to be transformed to cis-1,2-dichloroethene (cis-1,2-DCE) and further to vinyl chloride (VC) via microbial reductive dechlorination, although the degree was not too significant. According to our modeling results, the temporal and spatial distribution of the TCE plume suggested the dominant role of biodegradation in attenuation processes. This study can provide a useful method for assessing natural attenuation processes in the aquifer contaminated with chlorinated hydrocarbons and can be applied to other sites with similar hydrological, microbiological, and geochemical settings.
