Wake effects of an upstream bridge on aerodynamic characteristics of a downstream bridge

  • To study the wake influence of an upstream bridge on the wind-resistance performance of a downstream bridge, two adjacent long-span cable-stayed bridges are taken as examples. Based on wind tunnel tests, the static aerodynamic coefficients and the dynamic response of the downstream bridge are measured in the wake of the upstream one. Considering different horizontal and vertical distances, the flutter derivatives of the downstream bridge at different angles of attack are extracted by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations and discussed, and the change in critical flutter state is further studied. The results show that a train passing through the downstream bridge could significantly increase the lift coefficient of the bridge which has the same direction with the gravity of the train, leading to possible vertical deformation and vibration. In the wake of the upstream bridge, the change in lift coefficient of the downstream bridge is reduced, but the dynamic response seems to be strong. The effect of aerodynamic interference on flutter stability is related to the horizontal and vertical distances between the two adjacent bridges as well as the attack angle of incoming flow. At large angles of attack, the aerodynamic condition around the downstream girder which may drive the bridge to torsional flutter instability is weakened by the wake of the upstream bridge, and the critical flutter wind speed increases at this situation.

CFD in Hypersonic Flight

  • This is a short review of how CFD contributed to hypersonic flights in the past 50 years. Two unexpected phenomena that occurred in the entry flights of the Apollo and Space Shuttle made us aware of the impact of the high temperature real-gas effects on hypersonic flights: pitching moment anomaly of up to 4 degrees, and radiation overshoot behind a shock wave. The so-called two-temperature nonequilibrium model was introduced to explain these phenomena. CFD techniques were developed to accommodate the two-temperature model. Presently, CFD can predict trim angle of attack to an accuracy of about 1 degree. A concerted effort was made to numerically reproduce the experimentally measured flow-field over a double-cone. As yet, perfect agreement between the experimental data and computation is not achieved. Scramjet technology development is disappointingly slow. The phenomenon of ablation during planetary entries is not yet predicted satisfactorily. In the future, one expects to see more research carried out on planetary entries and space tourism.

  • Accurate prediction of a supersonic missile base drag continues to defy even well-rounded CFD codes. In an effort to address the accuracy and predictability of the base drags, the influence of grid system and competitive turbulence models on the base drag is analyzed. Characteristics of some turbulence models is reviewed through incompressible turbulent flow over a flat plate, and performance for the base drag prediction of several turbulence models such as Baldwin-Loman(B-L), Spalart-Allmaras(S-A), k-$\varepsilon$, k-$\omega$ model is assessed. When compressibility correction is injected into the S-A model, prediction accuracy of the base drag is enhanced. The NSWC wind tunnel test data are utilized for comparison of CFD and semi-empirical codes on the accuracy of base drag predictability: they are about equal, but CFD tends to perform better. It is also found that, as angle of attack of a missile with control fins increases, even the best CFD analysis tool we have lacks the accuracy needed for the base drag prediction.

  • High temperature furnace such as Steam power plant and incinerator contribute considerable part of NOx generation and face urgent demand of De-NOx system. Reducing agents are necessary to use De-NOx system. In this study mixing caused by direct injection of reducing agent solution spray into flue gas duct was measured. Carbonated water was used as tracer and simulated agent because ammonia as a reducing agent is not proper to experiment. Mixing and evaporation must occur simultaneously and quickly enough to achieve desirable efficiency. To achieve that, the angle of attack of static mixer and the location is simulated and $CO_2$ concentration is measured.

  • Unsteady aerodynamic analysis of an aircraft is done using a frequency domian 3-D panel method. The method is based on an unsteady linear compressible lifting surface theory. The lifting surface is placed in a flight patch, and angle of attack and camber effects are implemented in upwash. Fuselage effects are not considered. The unsteady solutions of the code are validated by comparing with the solutions of a hybrid doublet lattice-doublet point method and a doublet point method for various wing configurations at subsonic and supersonic flow conditions. The calculated results of dynamic stability derivatives for aircraft are shown without comparision due to lack of available measured data or calculated results.

  • Vortex is very interesting flow phenomena on the heat transfer enhancement. In the present study, naphthalene sublimation technique is used to determine the average and local mass transfer coefficients on the flat plate with vortex generator. A parametric study with Reynolds number and angle of attack is carried out to investigate the heat transfer enhancement. The heat transfer coefficients on the flat plate with rectangular type and delta type vortex generator are compared with those of the flat plate without the vortex generator. Comparing heat transfer coefficients between rectangular type and delta type vortex generator, rectangular type vortex generator has much higher value than delta type vortex generator at the same condition.

  • Paraglider has been used for a good air sports instrument by many people in the world though its short history. And manufacturers have improved it continuously. It has the great growth from the first model like parachute to the latest model that has the extreme speed, but we can improve it in more parts.   • The present study deals with CFD analysis of 'The vortex generators on plastic plate heat exchanger'. When a vortex generator is placed on the heat transfer surface, the flow gets more complex because it entails complicated three-dimensional flows such as separation, reattachment, and recirculation. CFX-5.4, a commercial code utilizing unstructured mesh, has been used as a computational method for solving RANS(Reynolds-Averaged Wavier-Stokes) equations, and the applied turbulence model is $k-{\varepsilon}$ model. In addition, those computational analyses were implemented under various conditions , with or without the vortex generator between two plates, the number, form and the size of vortex generator, and different attack of angle. From the calculated temperature, velocity and pressure distribution, vorticity, wall heat flux and so on under those conditions, this study shows the effect of vortex on heat transfer.

  • A numerical investigation was performed to determine the effect of airfoil on the optimum flap height using NACA 0021 Wells turbine. The five double flaps which have 0.5% chord height difference were selected. A Navier-Stokes code, FLUENT, was used to calculate the flow field of the Wells turbine. The basic feature of the Wells turbine is that even though the cyclic airflow produces oscillating axial forces on the airfoil blades, the tangential force on the rotor is always in the same direction. Geometry used to define the 3-D numerical grid is based upon that of an experimental test rig. This paper tries to analyze the optimum double flap of Wells turbine with the numerical analysis.

  • Experimental and numerical studies are conducted to investigate the flow field over a NACA0012 airfoil with ground effects. In experiment, the ground is simulated by a moving belt system. From the comparison between the experimental and numerical results, it is concluded that the velocity gradient over the ground plane causes the increments in pressure coefficient on lower surface of the airfoil and reduces the suction peak at the leading edge.
