  • In this study, an investigation on mechanical properties of flax natural fiber composite is performed as a precedent study on the design of eco-friendly structure using flax natural fiber composite. The Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding-Light (VARTML) manufacturing method is adopted for manufacturing the flax fiber composite panel. The VARTML is a manufacturing process that the resin is injected into the dry layered-up fibers enclosed by a rigid mold tool under vacuum. In this work, the resin flow analysis of VARTM manufacturing method is performed. A series of flax composite panels are manufactured, and several kinds of specimens cut out from the panels are tested to obtain mechanical performance data. Based on this, structural design of chemical storage tank for agricultural vehicle was performed using flax/vinyl ester. After structural design and analysis, the resin flow analysis of VARTM manufacturing method was performed.

  • Most yacht sails are made of thin fabric, and they have a cambered shape to generate lift force; however, their shape can be easily deformed by wind pressure. Deformation of the sail shape changes the flow characteristics over the sail, which in turn further deforms the sail shape. Therefore, fluid-structure interaction (FSI) analysis is applied for the precise evaluation or optimization of the sail design. In this study, fluid flow analyses are performed for the main sail of a 30-foot yacht, and the results are applied to loading conditions for structural analyses. By applying the supporting forces from the rig, such as the mast and boom-end outhaul, as boundary conditions for structural analysis, the deformed sail shape is identified. Both the flow analyses and the structural analyses are iteratively carried out for the deformed sail shape. A comparison of the flow characteristics and surface pressures over the deformed sail shape with those over the initial shape shows that a considerable difference exists between the two and that FSI analysis is suitable for application to sail design.

  • Stiffened panels are widely used in naval architecture and ocean engineering, and knowledge about their dynamic behaviour represents important issue in the design procedure. Ordinary vibration analysis consists of natural frequencies and mode shapes determination and can be extended to forced response assessment, while the Structural Intensity (SI) analysis, assessing magnitude and direction of vibrational energy flow provides information on dominant transmission paths and energy distribution including sink positions. In this paper, vibrational energy flow in stiffened panels under harmonic loading is analyzed by the SI technique employing the finite element method. Structural intensity formulation for plate and beam element is outlined, and developed system combining in-house code and general finite element tool is described. As confirmed within numerical examples, the developed tool enables separation of SI components, enabling generation of novel SI patterns and providing deeper insight in the vibrational energy flow in stiffened panels, comparing to existing works.

  • In this study, the structural analysis of cooling fan is combined with 3-D flow analysis by using CFD on fluid domain. The smoothly cooling flow with optimum design of cooling parts is essential at automotive combustion engine. The fan shape is modeled with three kinds of shape by varying the radius of the fan blade. By the results of analysis, the flow at Model I is more uniform than Model II or III. And the displacement at Model I is less than Model II or III. As the flow resistance of cooling fan at Model I decreases more than Model II or III, the efficiency becomes better.

  • A construction process consists of value adding activities and non-value adding activities, necessary or unnecessary. If construction personnel can eliminate inefficient and/or unnecessary activities within the process, they may have a great opportunity to improve their construction process. The Product Process Analysis (PPA) technique, which was developed in the manufacturing industry, can be applied for identifying wastes in the construction process and ultimately improving the process itself. It provides useful tools, such as a process chart worksheet and flow diagram, for mapping the flow of construction activities with predetermined standardized symbols. These tools make people understand the flow of activities more easily, identify value adding/non-value adding activities within the process, and areas where the process can be improved. The example applications of PPA are demonstrated in the paper through the case studies implemented on the construction process of structural steel. The results of case studies indicate that PPA technique was effective at identifying and removing wastes in the steel construction process. It is also found that PPA technique is more effective for improving highly repetitive construction processes.

  • This study was conducted to develop a domestic product for a flow control valve for a hydrogen refueling station, and a domestic prototype was manufactured and the durability performance evaluation was conducted through comparison with an imported products. The stress generated by the internal pressure was checked and safety was confirmed using a commercial structural analysis program, ABAQUS, in accordance with the withstand pressure test standards. In addition, after identifying the weak areas the fatigue life was predicted through a commercial software, fe-safe. This fatigue analysis showed that the hydrogen gas repeated test criteria were satisfied.

  • To investigate the affection of lumped mass and spring on the vibration power flow of cross-stiffened plate experiencing bending vibration, structural intensity analysis is done using the modal analysis based on assumed mode method. The numerical analysis is carried out varying the mass and spring constant and their attached positions. The results show that both the spring and the mass may cause to large variation of not only vibratory displacement but also vibratory power flow patterns in case of little change of natural frequencies, and the attachments near to excitation location can effectively reduce the magnitude of maximum structural intensity.
