  • An experimental research was performed to study turbulent flow characteristic in a $90^{\circ}$ circular bend by using the PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) method, this study found the time-mean velocity distribution, time-mean turbulent intensity with turbulent flow for Re = 10,000, 15,000, 20,000, and 25,000 along the test bend. It was found that the highest streamwise velocity of turbulent flow occurs near y/D = 0.5 and the flow moved to y/D =0.15. The peak turbulence intensity shifted toward the concave wall from $\theta= 45 and as \theta$ increased. the intensity decayed along the test tube.

  • An experimental Investigation was performed to study the characteristics of Electro-Rheological fluid flow in a horizontal rectangular tube with or without D.C electric field control. First, the microscopic behavior of the ER suspension structure between rectangular tube brass electrodes for the stationary ER nut(i and flow of the ER fluid was investigated by flow visualization. The flow of the ER fluid between fluid rectangular tube was solved experimental using the constitutive equation for a Bingham fluid. ER fluid is made silicon oil mixed with $0.2wt\%$ starch having hydrous particles. Velocity distributions of the ER fluids were obtained by particle image velocimetry measuring those of the clusters using an image processing technique.

  • The inlet flow of centrifugal blower were quantitatively visualized using particle image velocimetry. Because the centrifugal blower system is one of the key parts of EV battery cooling system, the quantitative information of flow field of centrifugal blower is important to design and optimize the cooling system. Two types of inlet parts were used in this study. One is the straight inlet and the other is a bended one. The results showed the flow asymmetry exists in the straight model due to the pressure difference in the blower. In case of the bended one, the separation bubble and the increase of head loss appeared compared with the straight model.

  • A commercial DOHC four valve engine was modified to make a single-cylinder optical model engine with replaceable head. Three kinds of head were used to generate swirl, tumble, and combined swirl/tumble motion. Schlieren visualization technique was applied to characterize the in-cylinder flow qualitatively. Particle Image velocimetry has been developed and applied for the quantitative flow measurements. Axial and tangential flow motion inside the cylinder has been characterized. The swirl/tumble port shows beneficial results in terms of turbulence generation for the initial flame propagation and mean swirl motion for the overall flame propagation.

  • The flow field structures of dual jet-in-cross-flow were examined experimentally for in-lined perforated damage holes configuration using particle image velocimetry. Ensemble averaged in-plane velocity and vorticity data in the jet were determined to study the mean jet structure. Jets are formed by pressure differences between upper and lower airfoil surface. The flow structure of vicinity of the thru holes consist of a vortical structure that wrap around the jets like a horseshoe and develop further downstream through a pair of stream-wise vortices. The shape, size and location of the horseshoe vortex were found to be dependent on the angle of attack. In spite of the existence of battle damage holes, the effect on the control force was insignificant when the damage size was not large enough.

  • Vapor-driven solutal Marangoni flow is governed by the concentration distribution of solutes on a liquid-gas interface. Typically, the flow structure is investigated by particle image velocimetry (PIV). However, to develop a theoretical model or to explain the working mechanism, the concentration distribution of solutes at the interface should be known. However, it is difficult to achieve the concentration profile theoretically and experimentally. In this paper, to find the concentration distribution of solutes around 2D droplet, the reverse tracking method with an artificial neural network based on PIV data was performed. Using the method, the concentration distribution of solutes around a 2D droplet was estimated for actual flow data from PIV experiment.

  • The ultimate objective of this study is to develop a water turbine appropriate for low-head open channels to effectively utilize the unused hydropower energy of rivers and agricultural waterways. The application of a cross-flow runner to open channels as an undershot water turbine has been considered and, to this end, a significant simplification was attained by removing the turbine casing. However, the flow field of an undershot cross-flow water turbine possesses free surfaces, and, as a result, the water depth around the runner changes with variation in the rotational speed such that the flow field itself is significantly altered. Thus, clear understanding of the flow fields observed with free surfaces to improve the performance of this turbine is necessary. In this study, the performance of this turbine and the flow field were evaluated through experiments and numerical analysis. The particle image velocimetry technique was used for flow measurements. The experimental results reflecting the performance of this turbine and the flow field were consistent with numerical analysis. In addition, the flow fields at the inlet and outlet regions at the first and second stages of this water turbine were clarified.

  • In this study, to investigate in-cylinder tumble or swirl intake flow of a gasoline engine, the flow characteristics were examined with opening control valve (OCV) and several swirl control valves (SCV) which intensify intake flow through steady flow experiment, and also turbulent characteristics of in-cylinder flow field were investigated by 2-frame cross-correlation particle image velocimetry (PIV) method. In the investigation of intake turbulent characteristics using PIV method, the different flow characteristics were showed according to OCV or SCV figures. The OCV or SCV installed engine had higher vorticity and turbulent kinetic energy than a baseline engine, especially around the wall and lower part of the cylinder. Above all, SCV B type was superior to the others. About energy dissipation and reynolds shear stress distribution, a baseline engine had larger loss than OCV or SCV installed one because flow impinged on the cylinder wall. It should be concluded, from what has been said above, as swirl component was added to existing tumble flow adequately, it was confirmed that turbulent intensity was enlarged, flow energy was conserved effectively through the experiment. In other words, there is a suggestion that flow characteristics as these affected to in-cylinder combustion positively.

  • Experiments were conducted to show the characteristics of the flow on unventilated parallel plane jets. Measurements of mean velocity components and turbulent intensities were carried out with a particle image velocimetry to investigate the flow field generated by the air issued from two identical plane parallel nozzles and mixed with the ambient air. The measurements range of these experiments were Reynolds number of 5300 based on the nozzle width and the cases of nozzle-to-nozzle distance were four times. six times and eight times the width of the nozzle. Results show that a recirculation zone with a sub-atmospheric static pressure was bounded by the inner shear layers of the individual jets and the nozzles plate. The positions. where maximum value of mean turbulent intensities and mean turbulent kinetic energy show, were at the same position with the merging point. The spread of jets in the merging region increases more rapidly than that of Jets in the converging and the combined region. As nozzle-to-nozzle distances were increased. it was shown that merging and combined lengths were shorter.

  • A Particle Image Velocimetry(PIV) algorithm is developed to analyze whole flow field both qualitatively and quantitatively. The practical use of PIV requires the use of fast, reliable, computer-based methods for tracking numerous particles suspended in a flow field. The TSS, NTSS, FFT-Hybrid, which are developed in the area of image compression and coding, are introduced to develop fast vector search algorithm. The numerical solution of the lid-driven cavity flow by the ADI algorithm with the Wachspress Formula is introduced to produce synthetic data for the validation of the tracking algorithms. The algorithms are applied to image data of real flow experiments. The comparisons in CPU time and mean error show, with a small loss of accuracy, CPU time for tracking is reduced considerably.
