A numerical solution for heat transfer of pulsating turbulent pipe flow was presented under the condition of fully developed dynamic regime and uniform well heat flux. The k-.epsilon. turbulent model was adopted to describe turbulent characteristics. The results were given at following conditions ; Time-averaged Reynolds number equal to 10000 ; Strouhal number ranged from 0.0005 to 0.05 ; The peak velocity fluctuation varied from 20 to 80 percent of the mean velocity. It was found that the effect of pulsation on local heat transfer rate is greater at downstream than upstream and the heat transfer was increased or decreased according to the pulsating conditions.
This paper presents results from system-level modeling of a water-based reactor cavity cooling system using RELAP5-3D. The computational model is benchmarked with experimental data from a half-scale RCCS test facility at Argonne National Laboratory. The model prediction is first compared with a two-phase oscillatory baseline experimental case where mixed accuracy is obtained. The model shows reasonable prediction of mass flow rate, pressure, and temperature but significant overprediction of void fraction. The model prediction is then compared with a fault case where the inlet of the risers is gradually reduced using a throttling valve. As the valve is closed, the model is able to predict some major flow phenomena observed in the experiment such as the dampening of oscillations, the reintroduction of oscillations, as well as boiling, flashing, and geysering in the risers. However, the timeline of these events are not well captured by the model. The model is also used to investigate the evolution of flow regime in the chimney. This work highlights that the semi-empirical constitutive relations used in RELAP-3D could have a strong influence on the accuracy of the model in two-phase oscillatory flows.
The rain-wind induced vibration of stays is a phenomenon discovered recently and not well explained yet. As it is influenced by a wide range of physical parameters (cable size and shape, wind speed, direction and turbulence, rain intensity, material repellency and roughness, cable weight, damping and pre-strain), this peculiar phenomenon is difficult to reproduce in laboratory controlled conditions. A successful wind tunnel experimental campaign, in which some basic physical quantities were measured, allowed an extensive analysis as to identify the parameters of the rain-wind induced excitation. The unsteady pressure field and water thickness around a cable model were measured under rainy-excited conditions. The knowledge of those parameters provided helpful information about the air-flow around the cable and allowed to clarify the physical phenomenon which produces the excitation.
The theory of microlocal analysis of hyperbolic partial differential equations shows that the energy density associated to their high-frequency solutions satisfies transport equations, or radiative transfer equations for randomly heterogeneous materials with correlation lengths comparable to the (small) wavelength. The main limitation to the existing developments is the consideration of boundary or interface conditions for the energy and power flow densities. This paper deals with the high-frequency transport regime in coupled heterogeneous structures. An analytical model for the derivation of high-frequency power flow reflection/transmission coefficients at a beam or a plate junction is proposed. These results may be used in subsequent computations to solve numerically the transport equations for coupled systems, including interface conditions. Applications of this research concern the prediction of the transient response of slender structures impacted by acoustic or mechanical shocks.
A reliable computational solver has been developed for the analysis of three-dimensional inviscid compressible flows around a nacelle of a high bypass ratio turbofan engine, The numerical algorithm is based on the modified Godunov scheme to allow the second order accuracy for space variables, while keeping the monotone features. Two step time integration is used not only to remove time step limitation but also to provide the second order accuracy in a time variable. The multi-block approach is employed to calculate the complex flow field, using an algebraic, conformal, and elliptic method. The exact solution of Riemann problem is used to define boundary conditions. The accuracy of the developed solver is validated by comparing its results around the isolated nacelle in the cruise flight regime with the solution obtained using a commercial code "RAMPANT. "
A numerical study of thermo-flow characteristics is presented to determine correlations of pressure drop and heat transfer for offset-strip fins. As a blockage ratio increased, previous correlations underestimate f values in laminar and turbulent regimes, and overestimate j values in laminar regime. Therefore, new correlations, which are applicable to fins with blockage ratios more than 15%, are presented.
The present paper focuses on the analysis of aero-acoustics characteristic by appling different four boundary conditions. The high-order and high-resolution numerical schemes are used for discrete accurate computation of compressible flow. The four boundary conditions include extrapolation, characteristic boundary condition, zonal characteristic boundary condition. These boundary conditions are applied to the computation of two dimensional circular cylinder flows with Mach number of 0.3 and Reynolds number of 400. The computation results are validated against measurement data and other computation results for the Strouhal frequency of vortex shedding, the mean drag coefficient and root-mean-square lift for the unsteady periodic flow regime. The characteristics of secondary frequency is predicted by three kinds of boundary conditions.

Landslide dam failure presents as a severe natural disaster due to its adverse impact to people and property. If the landslide dams failed, the discharge of a huge volume of both water and sediment could result in a catastrophic flood in the downstream area. In most of previous studies, breaching process used to be considered as a constructed dam, rather than as a landslide dam. Their erosion rate was assumed to relate to discharge by a sediment transport equation. However, during surface erosion of landslide dam, the sediment transportation regime is greatly dependent on the slope surface and the sediment concentration in the flow. This study aims to accurately simulate the outflow hydrograph caused by landslide dam by overtopping through a 2D surface flow erosion/deposition model. The lateral erosion velocity in this model was presented as a function of the shear stress on the side wall. The simulated results were then compared and it was coherent with the results obtained from the experiments.
Spiral tubes are used in a wide range of applications and it is significant to understand the vibration introduced by two-phase flow in spiral tubes. In this paper, the numerical method is used to study the vibration induced by the gas-liquid two-phase flow in a spiral tube with different flow regimes. The pressure fluctuation characteristics at the pipe wall and the solid vibration response characteristics are obtained. The results show that the motion of small bubbles in bubbly flow leads to small pressure fluctuations with low-frequency broadband (0-50 Hz). The motion of the gas plug in the plug flow causes small amplitude periodic pressure fluctuation with a shortened low-frequency broadband (0-15 Hz) compared to the bubbly flow. The motion of the gas slug in the slug flow causes large periodic fluctuations in pressure with a significant dominant frequency (6-7 Hz). The wavy flow is very stable and has a distinct main frequency (1-2 Hz). The vibration regime in the bubbly flow and wave flow are close to the first-order mode, and the vertical vibrating component is dominant. The plug flow and slug flow excite higher-order vibration modes, and the lateral vibration component plays more important part in the vibration response.

A theoretical analysis was performed on the heat transfer by laminar oscillating flow in a simplified heat exchanger of a Stirling cycle machine and the results were compared with the experiment of Hwang. In the analysis the general solution to the temperature field obtained by Lee et. al was applied and extended to a more realistic situation. The results show that the heat transfer is influenced by the ratio of the swept distance of the fluid to the length of the heat exchanger as well as the oscillation frequency. This is well consistent with the result of Hwang's experiment. It is also revealed that there exist three distinct regimes having different heat transfer mechanisms. Through the scale analysis the main parameters governing the heat transfer in each regime are reduced and the dependency of the heat transfer on the parameters are examined.
