  • A three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis is performed to investigate flow characteristics in the anode channels and manifold of the internal reforming type molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC). Considering the computational difficulties associated with the size and geometric complexity of the MCFC system, the polyhedral meshes that can reduce mesh connectivity problems at the intersection of the channel and the manifold are adopted and chemical reactions inside the MCFC system are not included. Through this study, the gas flow rate uniformity of the anode channels is mainly analyzed to provide basic insights into improved design parameters for anode flow channel design. Results indicate that the uniformity in flow-rate is in the range of ${\pm}1%$ between the anode channels. Also, the mal-distributed inlet flow-rate conditions and the change in the size of the manifold depth have no significant effect on the flow-rate uniformity of the anode channels.

  • In this paper the design and test results of a dynamic flow rate sensor was reported. This sensor comprises an 2-way cartridge valve as standard hydraulic component and a displacement sensor. Its working principle bases on the linear relationship between the flow rate and the piston displacement of 2-way cartridge valves under constant pressure drop. This principle is well known, however it is not easy to develop a flow rate sensor with the measurement range of 300 1/min, pressure loss of less than 8 bar at 300 1/min, maximum linearity error of less than $\pm$1% and the maximum rising time of 10 ms. This paper describes the design procedure of the flow rate sensor, the improvement procedure of static performance and test method and results of dynamic performance.

  • The influence of flow rate has been investigated on the treatment efficiency of continuous cycling electrolytic process employing artificial and actual photographic wastewater which containing silver ion. For artificial wastewater, the treatment efficiency of process was found to rise ca. three times when the flow rate of wastewater was increased from 3 mL/min to 15 mL/min. The process efficiency was doubled under the same condition regarding actual wastewater. The effect of flow rate on the treatment efficiency was observed to be altered according to the metal ionic form and solution composition. The coefficient of mass transfer was estimated using model equation, which verified that the raised treatment efficiency at higher flow rate was due to the increased mobility of ionic species.

  • The variation of sheet resistance and the reduction of masking oxide thickness with the flow rate of nitrogen gas has been measured in Boron predeposition process with Planar Diffusion source, BN-975. At 900.deg. C, the sheet resistance varied as much as 75% when the nitrogen flow rate was changed from 0.4 liters/min to 2.0 liters/min. At 975.deg. C, however, only 12% of sheet resistance variation was observed under the same flow rate change. The reduction of masking oxide thickness at 975.deg. C for a 5 min predeposition was 600 nm when the nitrogen flow rate was 0.4 liters/min. When the flow rate incresased to 1.9 liters/min, however, only 100nm of masking oxide was consumed in a similar predeposition process.

  • The emission characteristics of a semi-Bunsen type burner for gas boilers were studied experimentally. The experimental results reveal that nitric oxide emission increases with fuel flow rate. It is linearly proportional to total fue flow rate at a small amount of fuel up to 0.4 liters per minute. It does not change significantly within the range of fuel flow rate from 0.4 to 1.2 liters per minute per nozzle and increases at large fuel flow rate. The carbon monoxide emission reveals to be dependent upon the fuel flow rate per each nozzle and the number of fuel injection nozzles. Diameter of an injection nozzle could have an effect on the emission characteristics of this type of burners. However, there is no marked change in the nitric oxide emission if the total fuel flow rate is same with different nozzle sizes.

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of the secondary fluid flow rate through GLHX on a GSHP system with vertical single U-tube type GLHXs. The COP of a GSHP system with large flow rate was lower than it with small flow rate due to large power consumption of ground loop circulating pump. It is suggested that the heat pump unit with high COP and low flow rate through the GLHX have to be selected in order to enhance the performance of the system and reduce the length of GLHX.

  • An experimental study of absorption phenomena of water vapor into LiBr solution was carried out to find out the optimum solution flow rate. The staggered bundle of horizontal absorption tubes, which are the same configuration as the commercial heat pump, were tested. The results showed that the heat transfer and absorption rate were enhanced with the increase of LiBr solution flow rate. Those values for different absorber pressures showed the same qualitative trends. The optimum flow rate of solution was obtained as three times of the designed flow rate.

  • The present study predicted the effect of the flow rate of coolant on the absorption performance of a vertical falling film type absorber Heat and mass transfer peformances were numerically investigated. The exit temperatures of solution and coolant were decreased as the flow rate of the coolant was increased at the film Reynolds number of 100. The absorption mass flux was increased and then decreased as the distance from the inlet of the absorber was increased. The distance showing the maximum absorption mass flux was ranged from 0.3 to 0.5m. The heat flux and the absorption mass flux were increased and then slowly decreased as the flow rate of the coolant was increased. The maximum values were obtained at the flow rate of coolant of 2.0L/min.

  • The numerical analysis and the experiments are carried out to develop the design program for the flow control valve attached to the vane pump for power steering. The factors affecting the flow rate characteristics are analyzed by the experiments and the numerical analysis. The results are summarized as follows; (1) the main factors affecting to the first and second control flow rate are the diameter of big and small rod of the spool. (2) the cut off is mainly affected by the main spring constant, the initial displacement of main spring and the small diameter of the spool. (3) the dropping slope characteristics are decided by the chamfer of spool and the dynamic characteristics of the spool.

  • A two dimensional Darrieus-type turbine has been proposed for the hydropower utilization of extra-low head less than 2m. In a practical use of Darrieus-type hydro-turbine, head and flow rate may be varied temporally and seasonally. Considering that the cost advantage is required for the low head hydro turbine system, the Darrieus turbine should be operated with high efficiency in the wider range of flow rate possibly by using an additional device with simpler mechanism. In the present paper, an adjustment of inlet nozzle section by lowering the inlet nozzle height is proposed to obtain the preferable inlet velocity in low flow rate conditions. Effects of resulting spanwise partial inlet flow are investigated. Finally, an effective modification of inlet nozzle height over flow rate variation is shown.
