This report describes the experimental research on the flow phenomena of the aq uaous polymer solution within the Cuette flow of the concentric, cylinders type with a wide circular gap. We have investigated the phenomena of the fluid flow through torque measuring in the system that the inner cylinder is stationary and the outer one is rotating. Geometrical parameters of the system are the gap ratio of t/R$_{0}$=0.2 and Aspect ratio of l/t=100. The torque increases considerably in about 420-480RPM, So, it is considered a turbulent transition boundary, the higher plymer concentration is, the lower torque value is and the higher transition Reynolds number is. In each of the polymer concentration, the unstable boundary of torque, that is, idiosyncrasies of torque is observed around 220-280RPM. and the boundary is looked upon as a resonant vibration which is caused by the inner cylinder and tortional vibration of torque sensor.r.
When high-pressure gas is exhausted through nozzle exit to the atmosphere, expanded supersonic jet is formed with the Mach disk at a specific condition. In two-dimensional supersonic jets, the hysteresis phenomenon of the reflected shock waves is found to occur under quasi-steady flow conditions. Transitional pressure ratio between the regular reflection and Mach reflection in the jet is affected by this phenomenon. In the present study, experiments are carried out on internal flow in a supersonic nozzle to clarify the hysteresis phenomena for the shock waves and to discuss its interdependence on the rate of the change of pressure ratio with time. Flow visualization is carried out separately on the straight and divergent channels downstream of the nozzle throat section. The influence that the hysteresis phenomena have on the location of shock wave in a supersonic nozzle is also investigated experimentally.

A practical method of surge simulation in a system of a high-pressure-ratio multistage axial flow compressor and ducts, named SRGTRAN, is described about the principal procedures and the details. The code is constructed on the basis of one-dimensional stage-by-stage modeling and application of fundamental equations of mass, momentum, and energy. An example of analytical result on surge behaviors is included as an experimental verification. It will enable to examine the transient flow phenomena caused by possible compressor surges and their influences on the system components in plant systems including high-pressure-ratio axial compressors or gas turbines.
The fluid induced vibration (FIV) phenomena of an equivalent airfoil system of MAV have been investigated in low Reynolds number flow region. Unsteady flows with viscosity are computed using two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The present fluid/structure interaction analysis is based on one of the most accurate computational approach with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and computational structural dynamics (CSD) techniques. The highly nonlinear fluid/structure interaction phenomena due to severe flow separations have been analyzed for the low Reynolds region that has a dominancy of flow viscosity. The effects of Reynolds number and initial angle of attack on the fluid/structure coupled vibration instability are shown and the qualitative trend of FIV phenomenon is investigated.
When a cold HPSI (High pressure Safety Injection) fluid associated with an overcooling transient, such as SGTR (Steam Generator Tube Rupture), MSLB (Main Steam Line Break) etc., enters the cold legs of a stagnated primary coolant loop, thermal stratification phenomena will arise due to incomplete mixing. If the stratified flow enters the downcomer of the reactor pressure vessel, severe thermal stresses are created in a radiation embrittled vessel wall by local overcooling. As general thermal-hydraulic system analysis codes cannot properly predict the thermal stratification phenomena, RG 1.154 requires that a detailed thermal-mixing analysis of PTS (pressurized Thermal Shock) evaluation be performed. Also. previous PTS studies have assumed that the thermal stratification phenomena generated in the stagnated loop side of a partially stagnated primary coolant loop are neutralized in the vessel downcomer by the strong flow from the unstagnated loop. On the basis of these reasons, this paper focuses on the development of a 3-dimensional thermal-mixing analysis model using PHOENICS code which can be applied to both partial and total loop stagnated cases. In addition, this paper verifies the fact that, for partial loop stagnated cases, the cold plume generated in the vessel downcomer due to the thermal stratification phenomena of the stagnated loop is almost neutralized by the strong flow of the unstagnated loop but is not fully eliminated.
Small rectangular explosion chamber of its size 25cmX25cmX32cm with a circular bursting diaphram at the top was used to study the mechanism of gas explosion to fire transition phenomena, the process of ignition of solid combustibles during a gas explosion. To visulize the explosion to fire transition phenomena, transparent acryl window and high speed camera system were used. The test piece of solid combustible in this experiments was a 5cm$\times$5cm square sheet of newspaper which was placed in the explosion chamber filled with a LPG-air mixture. The mixture was ignited by an electric spark at the center of the chamber. Explosion to fire transition phenomena and the behavior of out flow and in flow of gas through the opening yielded by bursting the diaphram was visualized with shlieren system and without shlieren system. Diameter of a bursting dlaphram at the top of the explosion chamber was varied 5cm, 10cm, and 15cm, and the position of test piece were varied with 6 point. Explosion pressure was measured with strain type pressure transducer, and the weight difference of the test piece before and after each experimental run was measured. By comparing the weight difference of solid combustibles before and after the experiment and the behavior of out flow and inflow of gas after explosion, it was found that the possibility of ignition was depends on the LPG-air mixture concentration and the exposure period of test piece to the burnt gas. Test result of this experiments it was found that the main factor of this phenomena are that heat transfer to the test piece, and the pyrolysis reaction of test piece. Based on the results, the mechanism of the explosion to fire transition phenomena were inferred ; gas explosion- heat transfer to solid combustibiles ; pyrolysis reaction of solid combutibles : air inflow ; mixing of the pyroly gas with air ignition.
The turbulent flow in reactor pressure vessel (RPV) of pressurized water reactor (PWR) is important for the flow rate distribution at core inlet. Thus, it is vital to study the turbulent flow phenomena in RPV. However, the complicated fluid channel consisted of inner structures of RPV will block or refract the laser sheet of particle image velocimetry (PIV). In this work, the matched index of refraction (MIR) of sodium iodide (NaI) solution and acrylic was applied to support optical path for flow field measurements by PIV in the 1/10th scaled-down RPV model. The experimental results show detailed velocity field at different locations inside the scaled-down RPV model. Some interesting phenomena are obtained, including the non-negligible counterflow at the corner of nozzle edge, the high downward flowing stream in downcomer, large vortices above vortex suppression plate in lower plenum. And the intensity of counterflow and the strength of vortices increase as inlet flow rate increasing. Finally, the case of asymmetry flow was also studied. The turbulent flow has different pattern compared with the case of symmetrical inlet flow rate, which may affect the uniformity of flow distribution at the core inlet.
To diagnose circulatory diseases in the viewpoint of hemodynamics, we need to get quantitative hemodynamic information of blood flows related with the vascular diseases with high spatial resolution of tens micrometer and high temporal resolution in the order of millisecond. For investigating in-vivo hemodynamic phenomena, a new diagnosing technique combining medical radiography and PIV method was newly proposed and developed. This angiographic PIV technique consists of a medical X-ray tube, an X-ray CCD camera, a shutter module for double pulses of X-ray, and a synchronizer. The feasibility of the angiographic PIV technique was tested and quantitative flow velocity field distribution of a flow inside an opaque conduit was acquired by the developed system. It can be used for measuring flow phenomena of nontransparent fluids inside opaque conduits.
In order to reduce a aerodynamic drag of the rear, body, effects of rear lower end configuration of a vehicles were investigated by measuring the pressure distribution, visual flow phenomena by the use of digital image processing technique. The use of flow visualization in recent years has improved the general understanding of structure of complex flow and has yielded valuable information for analyzing fluid flow. As the results, it was found that the shape of rear lower part vehicles not only effected on the pressure distribution of the rear part of the vehicle but also difference of the flow phenomena.
Relationships between biochemical phenomena and hemodynamics on human endothelial cells are very important to study the mechanism of atherosclerotic formation and development. The objective of this study is to investigate the flow phenomena around the endothelial cell model by the PIV experiment. The microscopic images of endothelial cells were acquired by a CCD camera to fabricate the shape of endothelial cell. The cell models were fabricated by using a photoforming process. Two consecutive particle images were captured by the CCD camera for the image processing. Conifer powder as the tracing particles was added to water to visualize the flow field. The cross-correlation method was applied fer the image processing of the flow visualization. Pressure and wall shear stress variations on the surfaces of the endothelial cells were calculated to investigate the effects of hemodynamic forces on the morphological changes.
