  • An experiment has been carried out to identify flow patterns in a horizontal condensing flow with R-113. Characteristics of flow patterns were determined based upon a statistical analysis of differential pressure fluctuations at an orifice. The probability density function and power spectral density function of instantaneous pressure drop curves for various flow conditions were obtained. In comparison to the results of air-water flows, the flow patterns in a condensing flow such as annular, wavy, slug and plug could be identified. The experimental data determined by this technique were compared with the flow pattern maps suggested by other investigators. The result indicates that the statistical characteristics of differential pressure fluctuations at an orifice may be a useful tool for identifying flow patterns both in condensing flows and in adiabatic two-phase flows.

  • Microgravity experiments were conducted to determine the effect of liquid and gas superficial velocities on flow behaviors. Flow behaviors observed under microgravity conditions can be classified into five flow patterns: bubble. Taylor bubble, slug, semi-annular and annular flows. Transition boundary between four flow patterns could be determined by drift-flux model. It was also found that the effect of gravity and pipe inclination on flow pattern transition was not significant in the inertia dominant region.

  • Flow patterns are very complex and interactive between cylinders. The patterns are turbulent and non-linear caused by various factors. In this paper, flow patterns and pressure gradient around vertical cylinders were investigated by experiment. Changing gaps between cylinders the flow patterns are measured at a fixed coming velocity. Flow patterns showed very complex and closely related to the coming velocity and cylinder space. The pressure gradient around the flow field is observed by twelve hole pitot tubes and manometer. The experiment has been conducted in circulating water channel with PIV system. That can visualize flow patterns. The laser beam was used to reflect the image from particles and recorded by CCD camera. The cylinders were spaced from ID to 5D with 0.5m/sec of incoming flow velocity. The experimental results using pitot tube showed in good agreement with results of precious by others study. The results can be applied in the understanding and design of multiple pile array structures.

  • Heat transfer coefficient were measured and new correlations were developed for two-phase heat transfer in a horizontal pipe for different patterns. Flow patterns were observed in a transparent circular pipe (2.54 cm I. D. and L/D=96) using an air/water mixture. Visual identification of the flow patterns was supplemented with photographic data and the results were plotted on the flow regime map proposed by Taitel and Dukler and agreed quite well with each other. A two-phase heat transfer experimental setup was built for this study and a total of 150 two-phase heat transfer data with different flow patterns were obtained under a uniform wall heat flux boundary condition. For these data, the superficial Reynolds number ranged from 640 to 35,500 for the liquid and from 540 to 21,200 for the gas. Our previously developed robust two-phase heat transfer correlation for a vertical pipe with modified constants predicted the horizontal pipe air-water heat transfer experimental data with good accuracy. Overall the proposed correlations predicted the data with a mean deviation of 1.0% and an rms deviation of 12%.

  • This paper presents the results of a visualization analysis of the correlation between the fiber orientation and flow pattern in injection molding using the Gate-magnetization method developed for the precise visualization of melt flow. The results of the comparisons of the fiber orientation angles with the flow patterns by the Gate-Magnetization method for GPPS mixed with glass fibers show the strong correlation between the flow patterns and fiber orientation angles. According to forward movement of the flow, the fiber orientation patterns move toward the side walls following the flow patterns. These results elucidate that fibers are oriented in the expansion process of the melt, and ...

  • It is well known that a refrigerant-induced noise is caused by two-phase flow in the indoor unit of a heat pump air-conditioner. Especially when the flow pattern in a pipe is intermittent flow, the irregular noise occurs frequently. But it is very difficult to avoid this kind of the noise for the application of air-conditioner. Therefore, in this research, the flow patterns at two-phase flow state in a pipe of the indoor unit for the air-conditioner are researched using cycle simulator at typical cycle conditions. In order to find the relationship between refrigerant-induced noise and flow pattern, the noise patterns are investigated with respect to the estimated flow pattern from the various flow pattern maps. Base on the estimations of the flow patterns by those maps, the refrigerant-induced noise is evaluated as decreasing tube diameter, which can transit the flow pattern from slug to annular flow.

  • The refrigerant after the expansion valve interchanges the heat at the evaporator. At this moment, the state of gas and liquid becomes two-phase flow and causes irregular noise. In order to avoid the noise, the two-phase flow pattern should be predicted. In this paper, the procedure to predict the two-phase flow patterns such as churn flow and annular flow was suggested using the CFD software. The experiments using refrigerant-supplying equipment was carried out and the noise levels according to the flow pattern were measured. The flow patterns predicted by this procedure showed good agreement with those by experiments. The churn flow is noisier than annular flow pattern.

  • Recent studies proved turbulent flow properties in high-rise building models differ from those in low-rise building models by comparing turbulent statistics. Although it is important to understand the flow characteristics within and above high-rise building models in the study of urban environment, it is still unknown and under investigation. For this reason, we performed wind tunnel experiment using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) to investigate and identify the turbulent flow properties and characteristic flow patterns in high-rise building models. In particular, we focus on instantaneous flow field near the canopy and extracted flow field when homogeneous flow field were observed. As a result, six characteristic flow patterns were identified and the relationship between these flow patterns and turbulent organized structure were shown.

  • An experimental study has been conducted to investigate characteristics of the flow patterns, its transitions and the mean local void fraction obtained from which the probe was traversed diametrically from center to wall of the test section in the vertical upward air-water flow for isothermal condition using the electrical conductivity probe. It has been shown that the probability density function of the mean local void fraction measured statistically from a Fast Fourier Transform becomes a criterion for the flow patterns and the mean local void fraction profile is a highly function of the flow patterns.

  • Insulation layers in XLPE power cables may have some patterns generated in the manufacturing process. They are called 'flow patterns' and show flow history of molten polyethylene between inner and outer semiconducting layers. Flow patterns are even seen with naked human eyes and suspected to be inhomogeniety of insulation, weakening insulation performance. Investigated in this paper is electrical treeing resistance and ac breakdown strength according to flow patterns. Experiments of electrical treeing and ac breakdown strength by means of ramp tests were conducted using newly developed electrode system with point-to-plane structure and sphere-to-sphere structure, respectively. All results were analyzed with the application of statistics, showing little differences.
