Evaluation and Prediction of Cleanliness Level in the Mini-Environment System Using Local Mean Air-Age (국소평균공기연령을 이용한 국소환경시스템의 청정도 평가 및 예측)

  • A numerical and experimental study on the evaluation and the prediction of cleanliness level in the mini-environment system was carried out. Using the concept of local mean air-age (LMA) and effective flow rate, the new direct method for estimating the mini-environment was developed and compared with the previous performance index of airflow pattern characteristics. It was found out that the airflow pattern analysis is a restricted method to estimate the real performance of the mini-environment. The reason is that the airflow pattern cannot predict the effect of the increment of the ventilation rate on the cleanliness level in the mini-environment. While LMA is capable of showing the effects of the contaminant accumulation caused by turbulent intensity, eddy, and the increment of the effective flow rate. This result showed that LMA is more exact and effective performance index than the previous one like the airflow pattern characteristics.

Flow of Soluble Non-ammonia Nitrogen in the Liquid Phase of Digesta Entering the Omasum of Dairy Cows Given Grass Silage Based Diets

  • An experiment was conducted to quantify the flow of soluble non-ammonia nitrogen (SNAN) in the liquid phase of ruminal (RD) and omasal digesta (OD), and to investigate diurnal pattern in SNAN flow in OD. Five ruminally cannulated Finnish-Ayrshire dairy cows in a $5{\times}5$ Latin square design consumed a basal diet of grass silage and barley grain, and that supplemented with four protein feeds (kg/d DM basis) as follows: skimmed milk powder (2.1), wet distiller' solubles (3.0), untreated rapeseed meal (2.1) and treated rapeseed meal (2.1). Ruminal digesta was sampled using a vacuum pump, whereas OD was collected using an omasal sampling system at 1.0 h interval during a 12 h feeding cycle. Both RD and OD were acidified, centrifuged to remove microbes and precipitated with trichloroacetic acid followed by centrifugation. The SNAN fractions (free amino acid (AA), peptide and soluble protein) in RD and OD were assessed using ninhydrin assay. Free AA, peptide and soluble protein averaged 60.0, 89.4 and 2.1 g/d, respectively, for RD, and 81.8, 121.5 and 2.5 g/d, respectively, for OD. Although free AA flow was relatively high, mean peptide flow was quantitatively the most important fraction of SNAN, indicating that degradation of peptide to AA rather than hydrolysis of soluble protein to peptide or deamination may be the most limiting step in rumen proteolysis. Diurnal pattern in flow of peptide including free AA in OD during a 12 h feeding cycle peaked 1 h post-feeding, decreased by 3 h post-feeding and was relatively constant thereafter. Protein supplementation showed higher flow of peptide including free AA immediately after feeding compared with no supplemented diet. There were no differences among protein supplements in diurnal pattern in flow of peptide including free AA in OD.

  • Numerical analysis for the combustion flow in the combustion chamber of incineration system has been carried out in order to acquire the basic design capability of incineration system. Established mathematical model was applied to the performance prediction of the pre-designed combustion chamber of commercial plant. Especially, combustion characteristics and the variation of flow pattern have been deeply discussed in accordance with secondary air injection. Secondary air injection was effective for the turbulent mixing between air and carbon monoxide/volatile matter resulting in considerably reduced CO content at the exit. Secondary air injection was found to be one of the key design parameters because the size of recirculation zone could be changed with the variation of injection characteristics.

Elasto-hydrodynamic Lubrication Analysis for Biomimetic Riblet Surface like Shark Skin (상어표피 모사 리블렛 구조의 탄성유체윤활 해석)

  • For the characteristic assessment of biomimetic shark skin structure pattern for engineering applications, we conducted the elastic hydrodynamic lubrication analysis for the shark skin surface pattern. The shark skin surfaces with roughness are generated numerically in the similar size with real shark skin scales. For the spherical contact on the generated shark skin surface with two different flow directions which are transversal and longitudinal, 3-dimensional elasto-hydrodynamic lubraction analysis are carried out. The result of the longitudinal flow which are similar with the flow of shark skin shows more beneficial effects with lower pressure and less sensitive effect with surface roughness.

  • It is very important to select optimal investment alternative. The common method of economic evaluation is to compare of NPV, FW, AE by MARR, or the rate of return for the cash flow of alternatives. This method is undergoing by assumption that cash flow can be always evaluated by MARR, but the cash flow is not always increased or discounted like MARR. So this paper suggests a model on an economic analysis and evaluation regarding to various cash pattern, that is helpful for the person in the field to use easily.

  • To describe the air flow characteristics within an air cleaner cover and mass air flow sensor (MAFS) entry region installed in a 3.0L engine air induction system, flow visualization, velocity and turbulence intensity measurements were taken in several view planes. A detailed knowledge of the interaction between the design parameters and the flow structures will enhance our understanding of the motions within the flow field and enable engineers to optimize the induction system and reduce the signal-to-noise ratio in the MAFS output. Emphasis is placed on the analysis of coherent motions and the controlling parameters which affect the air flow in the MAFS entrance region over a flow rate of 13-240 kg/hr. The high speed motion pictures illustrated that the air flow generated within the air cleaner cover under steady state condition is quite complex. In both axial and radial planes of the main passage it was found that the flow pattern is remarkably influenced by the air cleaner cover and main passage configuration. A comparison of the flow patterns and measurements in the original and modified air cleaner cover is presented. Measurements from the MAFS indicated an significant reduction in pressure drop and signal noise for the modified cover as compared with the original cover, over an air flow rate of 13-240 kg/hr.

Air-Water Two-phase Flow Patterns and Pressure Distributions in a Screw-type Centrifugal Pump

  • It was reported recently that the pump head degradation near the best efficiency point from single-phase flow to the break-down due to air entrainment became less in a screw-type centrifugal pump than in a general centrifugal pump. In this paper, I carried out internal pressure measurements and visualizations, and investigated the various physical phenomena occurring inside a screw-type centrifugal pump operated in air-water two-phase flow. The results could give some characteristics about the degradation of pump performance on air-water two-phase flow.

Unsupervised Motion Pattern Mining for Crowded Scenes Analysis

  • Crowded scenes analysis is a challenging topic in computer vision field. How to detect diverse motion patterns in crowded scenarios from videos is the critical yet hard part of this problem. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to mining motion patterns by utilizing motion information during both long-term period and short interval simultaneously. To capture long-term motions effectively, we introduce Motion History Image (MHI) representation to access to the global perspective about the crowd motion. The combination of MHI and optical flow, which is used to get instant motion information, gives rise to discriminative spatial-temporal motion features. Benefitting from the robustness and efficiency of the novel motion representation, the following motion pattern mining is implemented in a completely unsupervised way. The motion vectors are clustered hierarchically through automatic hierarchical clustering algorithm building on the basis of graphic model. This method overcomes the instability of optical flow in dealing with time continuity in crowded scenes. The results of clustering reveal the situations of motion pattern distribution in current crowded videos. To validate the performance of the proposed approach, we conduct experimental evaluations on some challenging videos including vehicles and pedestrians. The reliable detection results demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach.

A study on the boiling heat transfer of R-113 in a horizontal tube (수평관내 R-113 냉매의 비등열전달에 관한 연구)

  • The information on the heat transfer characteristics, flow pattern and pressure drop, are very important for the desing of general heat exchanger, refrigerating system, air conditioning system and energy recovery system. In these systems, water or lubricating oil contained in working fluid affects greatly the flow and heat transfer condition and this phenomena must be considered in the practical design. An experiment has been performed for studying the flow and heat transfer characteristics of the forced convective horizontal flow of R-113 under the range of the liquid single phase state to the boiling flow state. Basic experimental results are obtained in the case that water or lubricating oil does not contaminate in the test fluid. Experimental results are as follows; (1) The local heat transfer coefficients in the nucleate boiling region and transition boiling region are almostly ten times as large as that of liquid single phase flow. (2) The measured heat transfer coefficient in the present experimental range is relatively agreed well with the predicted value from the various experimental results for the boiling flow.

  • Metal surface temperatures around the combustion chamber in a gasoline engine directly affect thermal durability and performance of the engine. Metal surface temperatures are influenced by many cooling factors such as drilled water passage, deflector, combustion chamber wall thickness, pillar, and coolant flow pattern. The object of this study is to learn how the coolant passages and coolant flow pattern in an engine influence to the engine metal surface temperature at engine full load and speed. From the test result, it is suggested a plan to reinforce the engine stiffness and to reduce the thermal stress simultaneously. Also, approaches are introduced to reduce the thermal load on the engine by adjusting the discharging direction from the water pump and by optimizing the water transfer holes in the cylinder head gasket. These methods and the optimized engine cooling system, which were suggested in this paper, were adapted for an engine in progress to eliminate the exhaust valve seat wear.
