  • Incompressible developing entry flows through square ducts with 90 degree bends are studied numerically by using an efficient implicit SMAC scheme with different boundary conditions. This study eventually aimed at passage flow analysis of turbomachinery elements with a strong curvature such as centrifugal impeller or draft tube. The generalized implicit scheme used in the present study has been developted to solve the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations by the author. Numerical results for some different numerical conditions are obtained and compared with each other

  • A flow passage opening device utilizing an acceleration follow-up technique allows fuel to flow continuously through a pressurized fuel tank system. It is very difficult to test the device in a real flight situation because of severe test condition and a cost problem. In this paper, therefore, the results of a basic negative g test conducted by low-speed airplane are compared with RecurDyn simulation. Dynamic behavior of the device in total flight profile of a high-speed vehicle is also analyzed by using RecurDyn to predict its performance.

  • The presence of crust on the inner walls of metallic ducts impairs transportation because crust completely or partially hinders the passage of fluid to the processing unit and causes damage to equipment connected to the production line. Its localization is crucial. With the development of the electronic imaging system installed at the Argonauta/Nuclear Engineering Institute (IEN)/National Nuclear Energy Commission (CNEN) reactor, it became possible to visualize crust in the interior of metallic piping of small diameter using real-time neutron radiography images obtained with a low neutron flux. The obtained images showed the resistance offered by crust on the passage of water inside the pipe. No discrepancy of the flow profile at the bottom of the pipe, before the crust region, was registered. However, after the passage of liquid through the pipe, images of the disturbances of the flow were clear and discrepancies in the flow profile were steep. This shows that this technique added the assembled apparatus was efficient for the visualization of the crust and of the two-phase flows.

  • The thermal and hydraulic characteristics of the cooling passage for HTS power cable should be carefully investigated to get the highly reliable and economic operation. In this study, the pressure drop and temperature change of the coolant flowing the corrugated passage was estimated using the simple one-dimensional approach, and the temperature distribution in the radial direction was calculated. The results show the dependency of the mass flow rate, thermal conductivities on the cooling performance of the HTS cable.

  • Numerical simulations have been performed to investigate tip clearance effect on through-flow and performance of a centrifugal compressor which has the same configuration of impeller with six different tip clearances. Secondary flow and loss distribution have been surveyed to understand the flow mechanism due to the tip clearance. Tip leakage flow strongly interacts with mainstream flow and considerably changes the secondary flow and the loss distribution inside the impeller passage. A method has been described to quantitatively estimate the tip clearance effect on the performance drop and the efficiency drop. The tip clearance has caused specific work reduction and additional entropy generation. The former, which is called inviscid loss, is independent of any internal loss and the latter, which is called viscous loss, is dependent on every loss in the flow passage. Two components equally affected the performance drop as the tip clearances were small, while the efficiency drop was influenced by the viscous component alone. The additional entropy generation was modeled with all the kinetic energy of the tip leakage flow. Therefore, the present paper can provide how to quantitatively estimate the tip clearance effect on the performance and efficiency.

  • A numerical simulation is carried out on flows in a rotating serpentine flow passage, which models a cooling passage in a gas turbine blade, by using a 3-D FVM based TURBO-D program. When it is rotating, the flow field exhibits quite different aspects due to the effect of the Coriolis force. Especially the secondary flow field appearing in the cross-sectional area is very complex because of the combined effect of the Coriolis force and the centrifugal force in the curved area. Local Nusselt numbers are also obtained based on the Reynolds analogy and compared with the published experimental data showing a good agreement. The results of the present study can be applied to the design of cooling passages of a gas turbine blade.

  • This study presents the flow visualization results, velocity and turbulence intensity measurements made within an air filter cover and entry region of a mass air flow sensor (MAFS) which is used in an induction system of 3.8L engine. Flow structure in two air filter cover assemblies were examined. The first was a clear plastic replica of the production cover while the second was a modified clear plastic cover with a geometry configured to reduce fluctuations. High speed flow visualization and laser doppler velocimetry (LDV) systems were used to reveal and analyze the flow field characteristics encountered in the sensor design process under steady flow conditions. A 40-watt copper vapor laser was used as a light source. Its beam is focused down to a sheet of light approximately 1.5mm thick. The light scattered off the particles was recorded by a 16mm high speed rotating prism camera at 5000 frames per second. A comparison of the flow patterns and LDV measurements in the original and modified air filter covers is presented to illustrate the controlling effect of the cover design on the turbulence structure formation near the bypass and on the sensor output signal. In both axial and radial planes of the main passage it was found that the turbulence flow pattern is remarkably influenced by the air filter cover and main passage configuration.

  • Aerodynamic optimization of an automotive air-conditioning blower is a hard task because of the highly complex flow phenomena related to three-dimensional flow separations and the unsteady nature caused by the interaction between primary and secondary air flows throughout the fan. In this paper, an aerodynamic study on a forward-curved centrifugal fan has been carried out Firstly we obtained the fan performance curves versus flow rates showing its unstable nature in the surging operation range. Secondly aerodynamic characterizations were carried out by investigating the velocity and pressure fields in the casing flow passage using a 5-hole pilot probe, at different operating conditions. Surface flow pattern near the cut-off area exhibits similar flow behavior above the best efficiency operating point, although the pressure level increases substantially with the Increase of flow rate. Vorticity in the casing passage flow occurs in all (low rates, downstream from the r-Z plane $\theta$=120 deg., where the position of its core changes with the circumferential location. Although complex, the general flow behavior were common, giving insight in its main aerodynamic features.

  • A small-scale thermoelectric cooling system was built in an effort to enhance the performance of the refrigeration system by utilizing the water-cooled jacket which was attached on the hot side of the thermoelectric module. Considered design parameters for the water-cooled jacket included the geometry of the flow passage inside the jacket and the flow rate of cooling water. The higher flow rate of cooling water in the jacket resulted in a better performance of the refrigeration system. The introduction of geometrical complexity of the cooling water flow passage to the cooling jacket also showed significant improvement on the performance of the thermoelectric refrigeration system such as the cooling capacity and the COP of the refrigeration system.

  • Precise prediction of rotordynamic coefficients for annular type seal of turbomachinery is necessary for enhancing their vibrational stability and various prediction methods have been developed. As the seal passage is designed complicatedly, the analysis based on Bulk-flow concept which has been mainly used in predicting seal dynamics is limited. In order to improve the seal rotordynamic prediction, full Navier-Stokes Equations with turbulent model derived in the seal flow passage have to be solved. In this study, 3D CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis has been performed for predicting rotordynamic coefficients of non-contact type annular plain seal using FLUENT. Comparing with the results of Bulk-flow model analysis, the result of 3D CFD analysis shows good agreement.
