  • We have deigned, fabricated and compared four different types of static chaos microfluid mixers, including the mixers using straight channel flow, microblock-induced alternating whirl flow, microchannel-induced lamination flow, and combined alternating whirl-lamination flow. Among them, the alternating whirl-lamination (AWL-type) mixer, composed of 3-D rotationally arranged microblocks and dividing microchannels fabricated by conventional planar lithography process, is effective to reduce the mixing length over wide flow rate ranges. We characterize the performance of the fabricated mixers, through the flow visualization technique using phenolphthalein solution. We verify that the AWL-type microfluid mixer shows the shortest fluid mixing length of 2.8mm∼5.8mm for the flow rate range of Re=0.26∼26 with the pressure drop lower than 5kPa. Compared to the previous mixers, requiring the mixing lengths of 7∼17mm, the AWL-type microfluid mixer results in the 60% reduction of the mixing lengths. Due to the reduced mixing lengths within reasonable pressure drop ranges, the present micromixers have potentials for use in the miniaturized Micro-Total-Analysis-Systems($\mu$TAS).

  • The analysis of the fluid flow characteristics in reactor pressure vessel is an important part of the hydraulic design of nuclear power plant, which is related to the structure design of reactor internals, the flow distribution at core inlet and the safety of nuclear power plant. The flow distribution and mixing characteristics in the pressurized reactor vessel for the 1000MWe advanced pressurized water reactor is analyzed by using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method in this study. The geometry model of the full-scaled reactor vessel is built, which includes the cold and hot legs, downcomer, lower plenum, core, upper plenum, top plenum, and is verified with some parameters in DCD. Under normal condition, it is found that the flow skirt, core plate holes and outlet pipe cause pressure loss. The maximum and minimum flow coefficient is 1.028 and 0.961 respectively, and the standard deviation is 0.019. Compared with other reactor type, it shows relatively uniform of the flow distribution at the core inlet. The coolant mixing coefficient is investigated with adding additional variables, showing that mass transfer of coolant occurs near the interface. The coolant mainly distributes in the 90° area of the corresponding core inlet, and mixes at the interface with the coolant from the adjacent cold leg. 0.1% of corresponding coolant is still distributed at the inlet of the outer-ring components, indicating wide range of mixing coefficient distribution.

  • Coolant mixing under natural circulation flow regime constitutes a key parameter that may play a role in the course of an accidental transient in a nuclear pressurized water reactor. This issue has motivated some experimental investigations carried out within the OECD/NEA PKL projects. The aim was to assess the coolant mixing phenomenon in the reactor pressure vessel downcomer and the core lower plenum under several asymmetric steady and unsteady flow conditions, and to provide experimental data for code validations. Former studies addressed the mixing phenomenon using, on the one hand, one-dimensional computational approaches with cross flows that are not fully validated under transient conditions and, on the other hand, expensive computational fluid dynamic tools that are not always justified for large-scale macroscopic phenomena. In the current framework, an unsteady coolant mixing experiment carried out in the Rossendorf coolant mixing test facility is simulated using the three-dimensional porous media capabilities of the thermal-hydraulic system CATHARE code. The current study allows highlighting the current capabilities of these codes and their suitability for reproducing the main phenomena occurring during asymmetric transient natural circulation mixing conditions.

  • The computational flow numerical analysis was introduced to predict thc turbulent characteristics in the mixing flow structure of $45^{\circ}$ impinging round jet. This analysis has been carried out through the commercial fluent software. Realizable(RLZ) k-${\varepsilon}$ was used as a turbulent model. It can be known that mean velocities analysed through RLZ k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulent model comparatively predict well the experiments and show well the elliptic shape of mixing flow structure in the Y-Z plane, but analysed turbulent kinetic energies show somewhat differently from the experiments in certain regions.

  • The Coanda effect has been used extensively in various aerodynamic applications to improve the system performance. The primary flow in Coanda ejectors is attached to the ejector wall and is expanded inducing a secondary flow. This will probably lead to the mixing of both primary and secondary flows at a down stream section. Very few works have been reported based on the optimization on such devices. The main objective of the present study is to numerically investigate the flow field on a typical Coanda ejector and validate the results with the available experimental data. Many configurations of the Coanda ejector have been analyzed. The effect of various geometric parameters of the device on the expanding mixing layer has also been obtained. The computed data agree fairly well with the experimental data available.

  • In the chemical, mineral and electronics industries, mechanically stirred tanks are widely used for complex liquid and particle mixing processes. In order to understand the complex phenomena that occur in such tanks, it is necessary to investigate flow field in the vessel. Most difficulty on the numerical analysis of stirred tank flow field focused particularly on free surface analysis. In order to decrease the dead zone and improve the flow efficiency of a system with free surface, this paper presents a new method that overcomes free surface effects by properly combining the benefits of using experiment and 3-D CFD. This method is applied to study the mixing flow in an agitated tank. From the results of experimental studies using the PIV (particle image velocimetry) system, the distribution of mixing flow including free surface are obtained. And these values that are expressed as a velocity vector field have been patched for simulating the free surface. The results of velocity distribution obtained by 3-D CFD are compared with those of experimental results. The experimental data and the simulation results are in good agreement.

  • In this study, a steady three-dimensional incompressible turbulent flow within a torque converter was numerically analyzed with the introduction of interrow mixing model. Mixing planes were introduced to exchange the flow informations between two adjacent elements of the torque converter. The mixing planes were installed among three elements of the torque converter. Therefore, in the present method, it could be possible to calculate the flow-filed within the torque converter without any assumption of circulating flow rates or any extension of boundaries toward the upstream and the downstream for each element. The numerically calculated performances of the torque converter were in good agreement with experimental results, and the complex flow patterns were be observed according to design and off-design condition. As a conclusion, it was found that the present numerical method was very effective in the steady flow analysis of torque converters.

  • This paper presents numerical and experimental works for simultaneous pumping and mixing small liquid using asymmetric microelectrode arrays, based on AC electroosmotic flows. To this end, four arrangements of electrode pairs were considered with diagonal/herringbone shapes. Numerical simulations were made of three-dimensional geometries by using the linear theory. The results indicated that the helical flow motions induced by the electrode arrays play a significant role in the mixing enhancement. The pumping performance was influenced by the slip velocity at the center region of the channel compared to that near the side walls. To validate the numerical predictions, the microfluidic devices were made through MEMS. The flow rate was obtained by using micro PIV, increasing the applied frequency. The electrolyte was potassium chloride solution. The flow patterns above electrodes were visualized to see lateral flow for mixing. The experimental results showed good agreements with the numerical predictions.
