Correlations among Different Tumble Measuring Methods and Significance of Tumble Ratios from Steady Flow Rig on SI Engine Combustion (엔진대상시험을 통한 텀블측정방식의 상관성 및 유의성에 관한 연구)

  • Optimizing in-cylinder flow such as tumble or swirl is one of the key factors to develop better internal combustion engines. Especially, the tumble, which is more dominant flow in current high performance gasoline engines, has significant effects on the fuel consumptions and exhaust emissions under part load conditions. The first step for the tumble optimization is to find an accurate but cost-effective way to measure the tumble ratio. From this point of view, tumble ratios from three different measuring methods were compared and correlated in this research. Steady flow rig, water rig, and PIV were utilized for that purpose. Engine dynamometer test was also performed to find out the effect of the tumble. The results show that the tumble ratios from those methods are well correlated and that the steady flow rig is the effective method to measure the tumble despite its limitations.

Measurement of Mass Flow of Water in the Stem of Musk Melon by Sap Flow Gauge (열목지 경유센서에 의한 멜론 경유양의 측정)

  • The mass flow of water in the stem of melon measured by Sap Flow Gauge was compared with the actual flow calculated by the difference between supply and drainage nutrient water to investigate the possibility and accuracy of estimation of melon's transpiration in rockwool culture. The Sap Flow Gauge which was made with copper-constantan theromocouple and nichrome fiber by our research team, was attached to the 3rd node of melon. The outdoor temperature, room temperature, solar radiation and relative humidity were continually measured. The amount of supply and drainage nutrient water were simultaneously measured for calculation of practical consumption of nutrient water to compare with mass flow of sap. The measuring errors of Sap Flow Gauge were 0.3 to 31.8%, which were small at solar radiation of 20MJ.m$^{2}$.d$^{-1}$ . The mass flow of water was lower for the measured value by Sap Flow Gauge than the actual value at higher solar intensity, however it was higher at lower solar intensity The variation of error rate of each Sap Flow Gauge was 0.1 to 13.0%. The measuring error with Sap Flow Gauge was negatively related with solar intensity and temperature. Therefore, to measure more exactly the mass flow of sap for estimation of melon's transpiration, the compensation factor must be calculated.

A Study on Flow Characteristics of a Separate Triangular Bar Differential Pressure Flow Meter for Measuring Exhaust Flow Rate of Diesel Engine (디젤엔진 배기 가스 유량 측정용 삼각 분리 막대형 차압유량계 유량 특성 연구)

  • A separate triangular bar type differential pressure flow meter was developed for measuring exhaust gas flow rate from Diesel engine. Three kinds of the separate triangular bar flow meters whose aerodynamic angles are different one another are made and evaluated, respectively. The experimental results show that an aerodynamic shape has a effect on the pressure difference between upstream and downstream at the flow meter, that is, the thinner the shape of the separate triangular bar flow meter is, the smaller the pressure difference at the flow meter is. The separate triangular bar type flow meter was calibrated at both cold and high temperature of the gas flow. A burner system was designed for raising the gas temperature and it was well operated in controlling the gas temperature. An empirical correlation between mass flow rate and differential pressure at the separate triangular bar flow meter was obtained and the empirical correlation was also corrected by the gas temperature.

  • This study is a suggest a measurement method of lateral displacement, which can be used to judge the stability of bridge abutment on soil undergoing lateral movement. The abutment of bridge on soft foundation makes lateral movement due to the settlement of back fill and lateral flow. To measure the displacement of such a abutment, there are a lot of indirect method for measurement such as survey of leveling or inclinometer gauge around the abutment. But all of them are not sufficient to confirm the ground behavior and measure the exact lateral behavior of structure. As making the structure and pile cooperatively by measuring the movement of lateral displacement, for measuring the abutment displacement precisely by using the inclinometer. In this work, we try to suggest efficient measuring method of abutment displacement and its application.

  • Measurement of optical flow is a core problem of matching through the analysis of image sequences. In this paper, horn's and anandan's techniques are analyzed to derive a better technique for matching. Experimental results show that Horn's technique has low accuracy in measuring the velocity of optical flow while anandan's technique has poor performaance for diverging images. Based upon this observation, a new technique for the measurement of optical flow is proposed.

  • A cost-saving feeding rate contro method for a batch reaction process is proposed by reconfigurating the flow rate control loop where the feeding rate is estimated by differentiating weight measurement. While the existing control methods require either a flow rate measurement device or a flow rate estimator, the proposed method is devised not to require neither of these facilities by directly controlling the tank weight with a time-varying set point. Experimental evaluation in a pilot-scale unit shows that the proposed method can significantly reduce the actuator hunting of the existing method where the flow rate is estimated by differentiating the weight measurement.

  • The flow field around a symmetrical airfoil in a uniform flow under the generation of noise was studied by experiments and numerical simulation. The experiments are conducted by visualizing the surface flow over the airfoil with a shear-sensitive liquid-crystal coating and by measuring the instantaneous velocity field around the trailing edge of the airfoil.   • Recent researches on nanofluids have mainly focused on the increase of thermal conductivity of nanofluids under static condition. The ultimate goal of using nanofluids, however, is to enhance the heat transfer performance under fluid flow. So it has been highly necessary to devise a simple and accurate measuring apparatus which effectively compares the heat transfer capability between the base and nanofluids. Though the convective heat transfer coefficient is not the complete index for the heat transfer capability, it might be one of useful indications of heat transfer enhancement. In this article, the working principles of experimental system for convective heat transfer coefficient around a heated fine wire in cross flow of nanofluids and its application example to three samples of nano lubrication oils are explained in detail.

  • This paper deals with an experimental study on a liquid atomization to investigate the break- up mechanism of a liquid film flow which is formed by a high speed air flow in parallel direction and an atomization characteristics of a liquid film flow in order to provide the basic data for the development of the twin fluid atomizer. Authors had built the simplified, transparent new devices which can form a uniform thickness of liquid film and an electrical measuring circuit of the liquid film thickness. By introducing the new devices and the measuring circuit, the time variation of a liquid film thickness the mean diameter of the droplets, the droplet size distribution, the degree of the dispersion and the atomization rate of a liquid film are measured experimentally. As the analysis of the study, it can be said the experimental investigation will fairly contribute for further study in this field of study.

  • Fully developed turbulent flow in a circular pipe and laminar boundary layer on a flat plate were measured to develop a measuring technique of the wall sheat stress using Preston tubes. New empirical formulas to extimate displacement factor of Preston tube obtained through the present study. The displacement factor for turbulent flow was considerably different from that for the laminar flow. Measured wall shear stress was not pretty dependent on the displacement factor for Preston tubes in the inertia sublayer of turbulent boundary layer, however was considerably affected in the laminar boundary layer. Measuring error of skin friction using the CPM technique was 3% for turbulent and 5% for thin laminar boundary layers.
