Estimation of Theoretical and Technical Potentials of Geothermal Power Generation using Enhanced Geothermal System (우리나라 EGS 지열발전의 이론적 및 기술적 잠재량 평가)

  • We estimated geothermal power generation potential in Korea through Enhanced Geothermal System (EGS) technology following the recently proposed protocol which was endorsed by international organizations. Input thermal and physical data for estimation are density, specific heat and thermal conductivity measurements from 1,516 outcrop samples, 180 heat production, 352 heat flow, and 52 mean surface temperature data. Inland area was digitized into 34,742 grids of $1'{\times}1'$ size and temperature distribution and available heat were calculated for 1 km depth interval from 3 km down to 10 km. Thus estimated theoretical potential reached 6,975 GW which is 92 times total generation capacity of Korea in 2010. Technical potential down to 6.5 km and considering land accessibility, thermal recovery ratio of 0.14 and temperature drawdown factor of $10^{\circ}C$ was 19.6 GW. If we disregard temperature drawdown factor, which can be considered in estimating economic potential, the technical potential increases up to 56 GW.

  • Surface modification of PTFE by ion irradiation was performed to improve its surface properties, In the case where argon was used to irradiate the PTFE films, an increase in the adhesion strength was observed when the ion fluence was over $1\times10^{15}\;ions/cm^2$, but the surface morphology dramatically changed to a needle-shaped one. However, when we used hydrogen ions under $O_2$ environmental gas, the adhesion strength increased at an ion fluence of $5\times10^{16}\;ions/cm^2$ and the surface morphology by the hydrogen irradiation was not needle-shaped. The surface morphology and adhesion strength of the hydrogen modified PTFE was influenced by the oxygen flow rate. It was confirmed by reflectance measurements that the surface properties of the hydrogen ion irradiated PTFE were superior to those of the argon ion irradiated PTFE.

Predicting Water Movement in the Soil Profile of Corn Fields with a Computer-Based STELLA Program to Simulate Soil Water Balance (토양수분 수지계산에 의한 옥수수 포장에서의 토양수분 이동 예측)

  • A simplified one-dimensional model STELLA was used to predict soil water movement in lllinois corn fields using soil water balance sheets. It offered the potential to increase understanding of soil nitrate and agrochemical leaching process. The model accounted for aU possible annual inputs and outputs of water from a closed ecosystem as represented by corn fields. Water inputs included precipitation, while outputs included runoff, transpiration, evaporation and drainage. To run the model required daily inputs of two climatic data measurements such as daily precipitation and pan evaporation. Vertical water flow through the soil profile was calculated with first order equation including the difference in hydraulic conductivity and matric potential at the various soil types. The output results included daily changes of water content in the soil layers and daily amount of water losses including run-off, percolation, transpiration. This model was verified using Illinois corn field data for the soil water content measured by neutron scattering methods through 1992 to 1994 growing seasons. Approximately 22 to 78% of simulated water contents agreed with the measured values and their standard deviation, depending on soil types, whereas 30 to 70% of simulated water values agreed with the measured values and their standard deviations depending on soil layers.

  • The variations of the uniaxial compressive strength, the strains and the elastic constants with respect to the angle of anisotropy are analyzed in order to investigate the characteristics of a transversely isotropic rock experimentally. Total 35 specimens of 7 different angles from a large block of rhyolite presenting the flow structure obviously are used in tests. This study is composed of two reports; the elastic constants are mainly analyzed for the every individual angle in the report No. 1 and they will be discussed synthetically in the report No. 2. From the specimens of 0 and 90 degree, 4 independent elastic constants which can directly be obtained without the help of any other suggested equations, may be referred to the true values. Data variation in the strain measurements differs on the angle is analyzed. That of small angle specimens tends higher than that of large angle specimens. The relation of apparent Young’s modulus and angle is found to be M- or U-shaped. For small angle specimens, Saint-Venant approximation cannot be applied successfully on account of showing the non-monotonous increase, and E1 is analyzed out of the true value range. In the specimen of $\phi$ = 75, the deviation of strain measurement and strength are smallest and 4 all constants are analyzed in the true value range. Therefore, specimen of the angle of around 75 may become preferable if only one specimen should be used in test of a transversely isotropic rock.

The Effect of Adding Kami-guibi-tang to Acetylcholinesterase Inhibitor Treatment on the Cognitive Function of Mild Alzheimer's Disease Patients: Study Protocol of a Randomized, Placebo-Controlled, Double-Blind Pilot Trial

  • Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a chronic neurodegenerative disease that causes disorientation, mood swings, problems with language, and difficulty remembering recent events. Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (AchEIs) and memantine have been used to slow the course of the disease, but they can neither modify its progression nor prevent disease onset. Previous studies have suggested that Kami-guibi-tang (KGT) could be beneficial for supporting cognitive function in AD patients, but few clinical trials have been published. This pilot study aimed to evaluate the effect of KGT in improving cognitive function in AD patients. Methods: The study will be a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, single-center trial conducted using subjects diagnosed with mild AD by neurologists. Study subjects will be randomly assigned to either a treatment or control group. The treatment group will receive KGT granules for 24 weeks, while the control group will receive placebo granules. AchEI administration will be maintained in both groups during the entirety of the study. Subjects will be assessed using the following exams: the Seoul Neuropsychologic Screening Battery (SNSB) for cognitive function; brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for brain metabolite, neurotransmitter, and cerebral blood flow (CBF) measurements; the Korean version of Quality of Life-Alzheimer's Disease (KQol-AD) for quality of life; the Caregiver-Administered Neuropsychiatric Inventory (CGA-NPI) for neurobehavioral symptoms; blood tests for amyloid and tau proteins and general blood parameters; and electrocardiography (ECG) before and after taking the medication. Discussion: Our findings will provide insight into the feasibility of large-scale trials to consolidate evidence for the efficacy of KGT for dementia treatment.   • When the landfill gas generated at the landfill site is released into the atmosphere, methane gas with a high global warming potential is emitted, which adversely affects climate change. When methane contained in landfill gas is used as fuel for internal combustion engines and burned to generate electricity, it is emitted into the atmosphere in the form of carbon dioxide, which can contribute to lowering the global warming potential. Therefore, in order to use the landfill gas as fuel for power generation using an internal combustion engine, it is important to increase the thermal efficiency of the engine. Thus, it is necessary to use a fuel supply system in which gas is injected using an electronically controlled injector at an intake port for each cylinder rather than a fuel supply technology using the conventional mixer technology. In order to use the electronically controlled gas injection method, it is important to accurately measure the mass flow rate according to the conditions of using landfill gas. For this, a study was conducted to measure the injection amount and calculate them in order for the intake port gas injection of landfill gas.

A Study on Detection and Monitoring in land creeping area by Using the UAV (무인기를 활용한 산지 땅밀림 피해지점 탐지 및 모니터링 방안 연구)

  • This paper proposes a method to detect and monitor the land creeping area using a UAV to analyze the damaged area efficiently. Using a UAV, it was possible to secure the safety of the investigators before the field survey and effectively utilize it to establish an investigation plan because an orthophoto can be used to detect and scale the cracks in a land creeping area. In addition, it was possible to analyze the scale of the crack quantitatively by extracting the topographic information from the orthophoto. The study sites were found to have a total crack area of 1.01 ha, a length of 1.07 km, an average width of 10 m, and a step distance of 1 to 10 m. Periodic UAV measurements can be used to detect displacements on the land creeping area and monitor the direction and scale of crack spread. Therefore, it is expected to be used effectively during recovery planning. Applying the UAV to the land creeping area resulted in the qualitative and quantitative results quickly and easily in dangerous mountainous watersheds. Therefore, it is expected that it will contribute to the development of related industries because of the high availability of a UAV in forest soil sediment disasters, such as landslides, debris flow, and land creeping area.

Evaluation of Smoke Control Performance of Ventilation System Using by Hot Smoke Test (Hot Smoke Test를 이용한 주차장 환기설비의 제연 성능평가)

  • Recently, in order to overcome the difficulty of entering a fire source due to the occurrence of a large amount of smoke in the event of a fire in a parking lot, it has used that a method of discharge smoke using air supply, exhaust fans and jet fans installed for ventilation of parking lots. In this study, the variation of flow in the smoke layer was observed using CCTV under two conditions, in which only the air supply fan operates and the manned fan operates together, and the temperature around the plume was compared to Albert eq. to assess its suitability as a parking lot ventilation performance evaluation method. As a result, it was found that the smoke layer could be disturbed if the Jet Fan was operated at the same time, which could lead to the possibility of an initial evacuation disturbance. However, the additional operation of the Jet Fan has been confirmed by the observation CCTV that the emission performance is improved, which is believed to help conduct the suppression operation. The temperature around the plume was measured and compared to Alpert eq, and was analyzed to be about $2^{\circ}C$ lower at the center axis of the plume and $9.0^{\circ}C$ higher at 8 m in the direction of the discharge of smoke. The results of temperature measurements around the plume were lower than the maximum temperature expected in AS 4391 and did not exceed the expected temperature risk caused by the experiment. As with these results, the temperature risk from the progression of hot smoke tests is foreseeable, so it will be available as one of the general evaluation methods for assessing smoke control performance in a parking lot without relevant criteria.

  • Borehole elemental concentration logging, measuring neutron-induced gamma rays by inelastic scattering and neutron capture interactions between neutron and formation, delivers concentrations of the most common elements found in the minerals and fluids of subsurface formation. X-ray diffraction and X-ray fluorescence analysis from core samples are traditionally used to understand formation composition and mineralogy, but it represents only part of formations. Additionally, it is difficult to obtain elemental analysis over the whole intervals because of poor core recovery zones such as fractures or sand layers mainly responsible for groundwater flow. The development of borehole technique for in situ elemental analysis plays a key role in assessing subsurface environment. Although this technology has advanced consistently starting from conventional and unconventional resources evaluation, it has been considered as exclusive techniques of some major service company. As regards domestic research and development, it has still remained an unexplored field because of some barriers such as the deficiency of detailed information on tools and calibration facility for chemistry and mineralogy database. This article reviews the basic theory of spectroscopy measurements, system configuration, calibration facility, and current status. In addition, this article introduces the domestic researches and self-development status on borehole elemental concentration tools.

Characteristics of Groundwater Levels Fluctuation and Quality in Ddan-sum Area (낙동강 하중도 딴섬의 지하수위 변동 및 수질 특성)

  • Confined aquifer, which is separated with upper clayey or silty materials, is partially distributed at the depths of the sediments in Ddan-sum area on the lower Nakdong river. Measurements of groundwater levels at 13 sites explain that groundwater flow shows seasonally various due to seasonal rainfall and agricultural water use. From 9 long-term monitoring data of groundwater levels at 7 sites, 3 types of groundwater levels time series can be classified using principal component analysis. The first type is seen in the center of Ddan-sum and has a round-shape graph due to a weak response to stream water levels. The second type exists in the outer part of Ddan-sum and shows sharply peak-shape graph due to a rapid and strong response to stream water levels and rainfall. The last type, which is seen in a deep layer, has a periodicity by tital effect. From geochemical analysis at each monitoring sites, [$Ca-HCO_3$] type happens in the center of Ddan-sum far from Nakdong river, and [$Na-HCO_3$] and [$Ca-SO_4(Cl)$] types exist in the outer of Ddan-sum affected by river quality.
