Prediction of scour around single vertical piers with different cross-section shapes

  • In the present work, a 3D numerical model is proposed to study local scouring around single vertical piers with different cross-section shapes under steady-current flow. The model solves the flow field and sediment transport processes using a coupled approach. The flow field is obtained by solving the Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) equations in combination with the k-ω SST turbulence closure model and the sediment transport is considered using both bedload and suspended load models. The proposed model is validated against the empirical measurements of local scour around single vertical piers with circular, square, and diamond cross-section shapes obtained from the literature. The measurement of scour depth in equilibrium condition for the simulations reveal the differences of 4.6%, 6.7% and 13.1% from the experimental measurements for the circular, square, and diamond pier cases, respectively. The model displayed a remarkable performance in the prediction of scour around circular and square piers where horseshoe vortices (HSVs) have a leading impact on scour progression. On the other hand, the maximum deviation was found in the case of the diamond pier where HSVs are weak and have minimum impact on the formation of local scour. Overall, the results confirm that the prediction capability of the present model is almost independent of the strength of the formed HSVs and pier cross-section shapes.

Application of Image Technique and Optical Fiber Sensor for Air-water Mixture Flow (기포흐름 측정을 위한 영상기법 및 광섬유센서 적용)

  • Measurements of multiphase flows containing bubbles have been limited because most existing methods target one phase flows. Especially, multiphase flows with a high void ratio have been rarely successful in measurements due to the sudden change of density and thick interfaces between air and water. This study introduces two methods that are capable of measuring flow fields regardless of bubble void ratio, named bubble image velocimetry and bundle fiber optic flow meter. The calculation of the depth of field is suggested to reduce and estimate errors by perspective image velocimetry. The bundle fiber optic flow meter is designed to increase a measurement rate using many optical fibers with a thin diameter. The two methods measured bubble plumes to test reliability and the velocity measurements show good agreement. In addition a hydraulic jump, one of the multiple flows in rivers was measured to test applicability of the methods.

  • The Cheju Current (CC), defined here as a mean eastward flow in the Cheju Strait, mostly carries water of high temperature and salinity originating from the Kuroshio in winter and spring, the Cheju Warm Current Water (CWCW). The strong core of the eastward component of the CC is found close to Cheju Island (Cheju-Do, hereafter) in winter and spring with a peak speed of about 17.0 cm/s. The eastward flow weakens towards the northern Cheju Strait, and a weak westward flow occurs occasionally close to the southern coast of Korea. The volume transport ranges from 0.37 to 0.45 Sv(1 Sv=10$^6$ m$^3$/s) in winter and spring. Seasonal thermocline and harocline are formed in summer and eroded in November. The occurrence of the CWCW is confined in the southern Cheju Strait close to Cheju-Do below the seasonal thermocline in summer and fall, and cold water occupies the lower layer north of the CWCW which is thought to be brought into the area from the area west of Cheju-Do along with the CWCW. Stratification acts to increase both the speed of the CC with a peak speed of greater than 30 cm/s and the vertical shear of the along-strait currents. The strong core of the CC detached from the coast of Cheju-Do and shifted to the north during the stratified seasons. The volume transport in summer and fall ranges 0.510.66 Sv, which is about 1.5 times larger than that in winter and spring. An annual cycle of the cross-strait sea level difference shows its maximum in summer and fall and minimum in winter and spring, whose tendency is consistent with the annual variability of the CC and its transport estimated from the ADCP measurements. Moored current measurements west of Cheju-Do indicate the clockwise turning of the CC, and the moored current measurements in the Cheju Strait for 1530 days show the low-frequency variability of the along-strait flow with a period of about 37 days.

Daily influent variation for dynamic modeling of wastewater treatment plants

  • Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) with activated sludge system are widely used throughout the most common technologies in the world. Most treatment plants require optimization of certain treatment processes using dynamic modeling. A lot of examples of dynamic simulations require reliable data base of diurnal variation of the inflow and typical concentrations of parameters such as Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen (TKN), etc. Such detailed data are not available, which leads to problemsin the application of dynamic simulations. In many examples of plants, continuous flow measurements are only performed after the primary clarifier, whereas measurements from influent to the plant are missing, as is the case with the examples in this paper. In some cases, a simpler, faster and cheaper way can be applied to determine influent variations, such as the "HSG-Sim" method ("Hochschulgruppe Simulation"). "Hochschulgruppe Simulation" is a group of researchers from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Netherlands and Poland (see http://www.hsgsim.org). This paper presents a model for generating daily variations of inflow and concentration of municipal wastewater quality parameters, applied to several existing WWTPs in Bosnia and Herzegovina (B&H). The main goal of the applied method is to generate realistic influent data of the existing plants in B&H, in terms of flow and quality, without any prior comprehensive survey and measurements at the site. The examples of plants show the influence of overflow facilities on the dynamics of input flow and quality of wastewater, and a strong influence of the problems of the sewerage systems.

  • Experimental study was conducted to reveal the instability such as leakage flow and rotating stall in an axial flow fan. For this study, unsteady total pressure probe and multi-hole pressure probe were specially designed for measuring the flow field upstream and downstream of rotor. The measured pressure signal was analyzed by Single and Double Phase Locked Averaging Technique. From the result of total pressure fields at inlet and outlet of the rotor, the useful information on the structure of the stall cell in radial direction was provided. Also, detailed flow measurements were carried out with a specially designed high frequency multi-hole pressure probe, providing some insight to the leakage flow and their interation.

  • In this study an air flow meter was developed for MPI engine using ultrasonic sensors. The major characteristcs of the ultrasonic flow meter are high speed response, flow direction recognition and linear output. The air flow rate measurements were conducted at upstream of the throttle and intake manifold. The characteristics of the ultrasonic flow meter are compared with those of the Bosch hot wire flow meter at both steady and unsteady engine conditions.

A Study on the Flow Characteristics in Axial Flow Rotors with Varying Tip Clearance (축류회전차에서 팁간극의 변화를 고려한 유동특성에 관한 연구)

  • The tip leakage flow passing through the clearance between rotor blade tip and casing shroud has been known to occupy an important portion of the rotor overall loss. In this study, flow characteristics in axial flow rotors with different tip clearances is investigated by experimental and numerical methods. The experimental study was carried out to measure static pressure and velocity profiles at the real rotating test rig. The axial flow rotors used for the experiments have ten blades and three different rotor diameter. The tip clearance heights are 1mm, 3mm, and 4.5mm. Measurements were done using spherical type five-hole probe by non-nulling method. The numerical study was carried out to calculate pressure distributions and velocity vectors at the same condition as the experiments in the flow fields of axial flow rotors using Phoenics code.

Coolant Flow Characteristics and Cooling Effects in the Cylinder Head with Coolant Flow System and Local Water Passage (냉각수 공급방식 및 국부적인 물통로의 형상 변화에 따른 냉각수 유동특성 및 연소실 벽면의 냉각효과)

  • For the countermeasure of expected higher thermal load in miller cycle engine, coolant flows in the cylinder head of base engine with several coolant flow methods and drilled hole passages were measured by using PIV technique. And the cooling effect was evaluated by measurements of wall temperatures according to each coolant flow method. It was found that the series flow system was most suitable among the discussed 3 types of coolant flow methods since it had the best cooling effect in cylinder head by the fastest coolant flow velocity It was also found that for drilled water passage to decrease the large thermal load in exhaust valve bridge, nozzle type is more effective compared with round type of water passage, and its size has to be determined according to the coolant flow pattern and velocity in each cylinder.

An Experimental Study on Flow Angle with Swirl in a Horizontal Circular Tube (수평 원통 관에서 선회를 동반한 유동각에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • Flow angle with Swirl in a horizontal circular tube and a cylindrical annuli were experimentally studied for its visualization. This present investigation deals with flow angle, flow visualization studies and vortex core by using oil smoke and a hot wire anemometer for Re = 40,000 and 50000 at X/D = 41, 59 and 71 in a horizontal circular tube. In the swirl air flow, a vortex core was formed at high swirl intensity along the test tube. The flow angle and the vortex core depended on the swirl intensity along the test tube. The results of flow angles with swirl measured by flow visualization and hot wire reasonably agree with those of Sparrow One of the primary objectives of this research was to measure the flow angle with swirl in a cylindrical annuli along the test tube for different Reynolds numbers. The Reynolds number for these measurements ranged from 60,000 to 100,000 with L/D = a to 4.

  • A flow stabilizer, which is made of a honeycomb and three different mesh screens, is located downstream of a butterfly-type valve, for the reduction of flow disturbances behind the valve. Mean flow and turbulence measurements as well as flow visualizations are conducted in the downstream region of the deepens the non-uniformity of the streamwise velocity component and turbulence. The mesh screens considerably reduce the turbulence and enhance the uniformity of mean velocities. The combination of the honeycomb and the three mesh screens results in an efficient reduction in the flow disturbances. In addition, the flow stabilizer proves to have a good performance in the suppression of turbulence at a short distance.
