The flow at the impeller exit is important to validate engineering design and numerical analysis of pumps. We installed axisymmetric collector instead of the volute casing, so there is no interaction between the impeller and casing. A hot-film probe and a high response pressure transducer are used to investigate the flow at impeller exit and vaneless diffuser region for design and off design flow rate. For a single suction centrifugal pump of low specific speed, the flow field such as velocity, flow angle, and total pressure are measured by traversing the probe across the vaneless diffuser. These data can be used for performance prediction, design, and numerical analysis of pumps.
New Design configurations of the fighter aircraft igloo diffuser were studied based on the closed ventilation type in contrast to the conventional open distribution type. To validate the enhanced and safe performance, the exhaust flow patterns of the two igloo diffuser types were simulated by both experimental and computational approaches as design tools. Flow visualizations were conducted to investigate the exhaust flow patterns in experimental approach. In addition, the commercial code called Fluent was used to calculate flow field properties. Computational simulations provided detailed parametric studies that significantly reduced the amount of experimentation necessary to alter the design parameters of the existing fighter igloo diffuser. The closed ventilation type of the igloo diffuser was shown the better results.
Flow control of flow field is essential to design efficient elements relating to fluid machineries. In this study, flow characteristics of rectangular prism with center gap through-flow at different aspect ratio was investigated to flow control. It was used a FLUENT 6.3 version to study flow field. It was found that the through-flow disturbs the development of vertical velocity component and decreased the vortex size and critical value of a rapid change in pressure coefficient distribution.
In this paper, the relation between displacement of piezoelectric material and electric field was proposed. FEA was introduced to predict the displacement and reaction force of plate spring attached in the piezoelectric material. The relation between displacement of piezoelectric material forced by plate spring and applied electric field were further verified by experimental investigation. Also, the flow rate of gas in piezoelectric valve was examined by experiment. Finally, the relation between electric field and gas flow was derived. Based on these results, these relations can be used in the design of mass flow controller.
FLIC(Fluid in cell) method has been used for analyzing a cold gas flow field in an interrupter of a circuit treater since 1970s. In this paper FLIC method is applied to calculation of a cold gas flow and then combined with the simple are analysis method in order to investigate the flow field characteristics in a puffer type interrupter rated at 145kV 40kA. The results for a cold gas flow agree with the experimental measurement well. The other results such as pressure rise, arc temperature, post-arc current and so forth am also reasonable and show the possibility that the combined program can be applied to the design of UHV interrupters.
Proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is a portable and clean power generation device. The structural arrangement of the flow field has a significant influence on the delivery efficiency of PEMFC. In this article, a new bionic flow channel is designed based on the inspiration of a spider shape. The branch channel width and branch corner are studied as the focus, and its simulation is carried out by the method of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The results show that when channel width/rib width and corner of the branch are 1.5 and 130° , respectively, it is the best numerical combination and the cell comprehensive performance is excellent. The final model using this numerical combination is compared with the traditional flow channel model to verify the advancement of this scheme.
The purpose of this study is to design an effective atmospheric environment system through the design of the dust collection in the air shot room being operated in a domestic shipyard. The ventilation system in the current air shot room mostly uses a dust collecting filter to filter internal particles and releases them in the atmosphere. A conventional design was made too much. In order to prevent an error and draw an optimal design, Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tried to be applied only to air shot room. In the advanced design technique, computer simulation was conducted to secure basic design data. In order to find the basic design of the ventilation system and the flow field in the air shot room at propeller mold workplace of a shipyard, the CFD was conducted. In the case of Model-1 as a conventional workplace, where air flows in the inlet due to the subatmospheric pressure generated by inhalation of an air blower and flows out to the outlet, a discharge flow rate was somewhat low, and there was the holdup zone in the room. In the case of Model-2 as an improved model, the ventilation system was improved in the Push-Pull type, and the holdup of the internal flow field was improved.
The flow at the impeller exit is important to validate engineering design and numerical analysis of pumps. However, it is not easy to measure the flow at the impeller exit and evaluate the impeller performance since there is usually strong interaction between the impeller and the volute casing. We installed axisymmetric collector instead of the volute casing, so there is no interaction between the impeller and casing. A 3-hole Cobra probe is used to investigate the flow at impeller exit and vaneless diffuser region for design and on design flow rate. For a single suction centrifugal pump of low specific speed, the flow field such as velocity, flow angle, and total pressure are measured by traversing the probe across the vaneless diffuser. These data can be used for performance prediction, desist and numerical analysis of pumps.
In this study temperature distribution and gas flow inside a planetary type reactor in which a number of satellites on a spinning susceptor were rotating were analyzed using numerical simulation. Effects of flow rates on gas flow and temperature distribution were investigated in order to obtain design parameters. The commercial computational fluid dynamics software CFD-ACE+ was used in this study. The multiple-frame-of-reference was used to solve continuity, momentum and energy conservation equations which governed the transport phenomena inside the reactor. Kinetic theory was used to describe the physical properties of gas mixture. Effects of the rotation speed of the satellites was clearly seen when the inlet flow rate was small. Thickness of the boundary layer affected by the satellites rotation became very thin as the flow rate increased. The temperature field was little affected by the incoming flow rate of precursors.
A computerized design system of axial fan is developed for constructing 3-D blade geometry and predicting both aerodynamic performance and noise. The aerodynamic blading design of fan is conducted by blade angle distribution, camber line determination, airfoil thickness distribution and blade element stacking along spanwise distance. The internal flow and the aerodynamic performance of designed fan are predicted by the through-flow modeling technique with flow deviation and pressure loss correlations. Based on the predicted internal flow field and performance data, fan noise is predicted by two models for discrete frequency and broadband noise sources. The present predictions of the flow distribution, the performance and the noise level of actual fans are well agreed with measurement results.
