  • Flow distributions in a rectangular duct with two branch ducts are measured by 5 W laser doppler velocity meter. The fluid flows are also computed by commercial soft-ware of STAR-CD for comparison between them. The Reynolds numbers in the main duct are from 4,226 to 17,491. The ratios distributed into two branches from the main duct are in-variant to Reynolds numbers according to both of numerical and experimental results. However computed velocity profiles at exit of each branch are somewhat different from measured profiles at the same location.

  • This numerical analysis uses the lifting surface method and frequency-domain panel method based on the linear compressible aerodynamic theory. Increased knowledge of flow conditions within mixed-flow fan should indicates means of improving performance of these turbomachines. Thus, only an approximate solution is obtained whose prime intent is to recognize the most significant characteristics of the "ideal" geometry. For a given set of operating condition, the flow conditions within mixed-flow fan depend on the geometry of the machine (three-dimensional flow effects) and on the properties of the fluid. But most treatments of the problem have been concerned with the two-dimensional flow effects for incompressible, non-viscous fluids. Interest in the field of mixed-flow fan resulted in the undertaking of a program to develop reliable design procedures that would avoid the need for lengthy development work.

  • Because Impinging jet has excellent heat & mass transfer characteristics. it has many advantages of cooling. drying. etc and widely applied at industrial fields. Therefore, there have been many experimental investigations and theoretical studies about Impinging jet. The present study is about a cooling characteristic by Impinging jet for a Square Plate on Duct and investigated this characteristic through three-dimensions numerical analysis, using FLUENT. As the result of this study, heat transfer effect is the most appropriate condition when the ratio of distance is 6 between nozzle exit diameter and heat source. diameter of duct is 90mm and height of duct is 60mm. In addition. under the influence of injected jet. stagnant fluid flow into free jet field and this affected the whole flow field. So the shape of duct is a important factor and the researcher confirmed the need of investigation about duct.

  • It is common to design the duct branches where to supply the required air flow for individual room in residential apartment house. However it is difficult to adjust the air volume adequately in small air duct branches in residential ventilation system. The purpose of this study is to figure out the performance of Multidrop chamber coupling system for the residential ventilation system. The experiments were designed to simulate apartment of $84m^2$ and established multidrop chamber duct and general duct on the ceiling of the apartment. Distribution performance of air supply rate were evaluated in this experiments. As a result, distribution performance of air supply rate in the general duct is different from designed air supply rate by about 35% ~ 50% and about 10% in the multidrop chamber system. In additional the sound insulation performance of the multidrop chamber system decreased about 20% compared with general duct system. Therefore, the multidrop chamber system is considered to satisfy proper air supply rate of each room and to improve the sound insulation performance in apartment Houses.

  • This paper presents the thermal hydraulic performance of a three dimensional rib-roughened solar air heater (SAH) duct with the one principal wall subjected to uniform heat flux. The SAH duct has aspect ratio of 12.0 and the Reynolds number ranges from 2000 to 12000. The roughness has relative rib height of 0.045, ratio of dimple depth to print diameter of 0.5 and rib pitch ratio of 8.0. The flow attack angle is varied from $35^{\circ}$ to $70^{\circ}$. Various turbulent flow models are used for the heat transfer and fluid flow analysis and their results are compared with the experimental results for smooth surfaces. The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) results based on the renormalization k-epsilon model are in better outcomes compared with the experimental data. This model is used to calculate heat transfer and fluid flow in SAH duct with the compound roughness of V-shaped ribs and dimples. The overall thermal performance based on equal pumping power is found to be the highest (2.18) for flow attack angle of $55^{\circ}$. The thermo-hydraulic performance for V-pattern shaped ribs combined with dimple ribs is higher than that for dimple rib shape and V-pattern rib shape air duct.

  • The present study addresses the open end correction associated with the reflection and discharge phenomena of a weak shock wave from an open end of a duct. The open end correction of the weak shock wave is investigated experimentally and by numerical computation. An experiment is made using a simple shock tube with an open end, and computation is performed to simulate the experimental flow field using the unsteady, axisymmetric, compressible, flow governing equations. The results obtained show that an open end correction should be involved for shock wave discharge and reflection problems generated from the exit of the duct with an open end baffle plate. With a baffle plate less than three times the duct diameter, it is found that the open end correction is a function of both the diameter of the baffle plate and normal shock wave magnitude. However, for a baffle plate larger than three times the duct diameter, it is independent of the baffle plate diameter. The present computations predict the results of shock tube experiment with good accuracy. A new empirical equation for prediction of the open end correction is found for the weak shock reflection and discharge phenomena occurring at the open end of the duct with and without a baffle plate.

  • In the present study, characteristics of steady state laminar flows of a straight duct connected to a 180$^{o}$ curved duct were examined in the entrance region through experimental and numerical analyses. For the analysis, the governing equations of laminar flows in the Cartesian coordinate system were applied. Flow characteristics such as velocity profiles and secondary flows were investigated numerically and experimentally in a square cross-sectional straight duct by the PIV system and a CFD code(STAR CD). For the PIV measurement, smoke particles produced from mosquito coils. The experimental data were obtained at 9 points dividing the test sections by 400 3m. Experimental and numerical results can be summarized as follows. 1) Reynolds number, Re was increased, dimensionless velocity profiles at the outer wall were increased due to the effect of the centrifugal force and secondary flows. 2) The intensity of a secondary flow became stronger at the inner wall rather than the outer wall regardless of Reynolds number. Especially, fluid dynamic phenomenon called conner impact were observed at dimensionless axial position, x/D$_{h}$=50.

  • The airflow characteristics of an air-conditioning duct with multiple diffusers were investigated through one-dimensional analysis, CFD simulation and experimental measurement. One-dimensional program based on Bernoulli's equation and minor loss equations was developed in order to evaluate the air distribution rate at each diffuser. In CFD simulation, three-dimensional flow characteristics inside air-conditioning duct were computed for incompressible viscous flow, adopting the RNG k-$\xi$turbulence model. Also, in an effort to equalize the discharge flow rate at each outlet, the optimization procedure has been performed to obtain the optimum diffuser area. In this process, square of difference between maximum discharge rate and minimum discharge rate is used as an object function. Diffuser area and discharge velocity are established as constraints. After optimization process, determined design variables are applied again in CFD simulation and experiment to validate the optimized result by one-dimensional program. Comparison with the experimental data of airflow rate distribution showed that the developed program seems to be acceptable and can be useful design tool for an automotive air-conditioning duct in an initial design stage.

  • The present study investigates convective heat/mass transfer and flow characteristics in wavy ducts of primary surface heat exchanger. Experiments using a naphthalene technique are carried out to determine the local transfer characteristics for flow in the corrugated wall duct. The aspect ratios of the rectangular duct cross-section are 7.3, 4.7 and 1.8 with a corrugation angle of $145^{\circ}$. The Reynolds numbers, based on the duct hydraulic diameter, are ranged from 1000 to 5000. The local heat/mass transfer measurement is conducted in the spanwise directions. The results show that Tayler-Gortler vortices exist on the pressure surface. Flow separation on the suction surface appears at a high Reynolds number resulting in a sharp decrease in the local transfer rates, but relatively high transfer rates are obtained in the reattachment region.
