  • The flow characteristics of a swirl injector were investigated with the variation of the flow condition and geometric dimensions, such as orifice length for considering the viscous effect and tangential entry port area for considering the swirl intensity. The liquid film thickness strongly influencing on the formed drop size of the spray was measured using a new technique. The film thickness measurement technique proposed here, used the attenuation of fluorescence signal near the injector exit. The breakup length that is important for the flame location as well as the spray cone angle which influences on the ignition performance was measured using a backlit stroboscopic photography technique. From the experimental results, it is found that an increase in injection pressure decreased the film thickness and breakup length, and also enlarged the spray cone angle. A decrease in orifice length and tangential entry port area has a similar tendency of thinner film thickness, shorter breakup length and larger spray cone angle. In the present study, we proposed empirical models of the flow characteristics of the swirl injectors.

  • In this paper, the acoustic performance of a shipboard large-sized room unit is studied. The room unit is a kind of rectangular absorptive chamber with a partition whose surface absorptive material with fabric skin is attached to. The room unit has one inlet and three outlet. At the inlet, a plane damper is installed to control the flow rate. The acoustic performance of a prototype room unit is measured using a HVAC mock-up. It is shown that its insertion loss is comparable with that of a commercially-used room unit but the developed room unit generates flow noise higher than the other one. The major source of flow noise is analyzed by NADS-R, the noise analysis program for room unit. Cone-shaped dampers are proposed to be used as the damper of a room unit to reduce flow noise. It is shown that the cone-shaped damper decrease flow noise remarkably.

  • The non-Newtonian flow curves of polyurethane melts were obtained by using a Physica cone-plate rheometer at various temperatures. The rheological parameters were obtained by applying non-Newtonian flow equation to the flow curves for polyurethane samples. When the polyurethane samples are under increasing-decreasing shear rate modes, the hysteresis loop and thixotropic behavior were shown. Polyurethane melts behave as strong gels when they are subjected to shear flow, but when the applied stress surpasses the yield stress, they exhibit non-linear viscoelasticity. Upon decreasing shear rate, its shear stress remains smaller than the values measured in the increasing shear rate mode, because of broken of its structure.

  • In this study, an ISO 5660-1 cone calorimeter experiment was conducted to examine the effects of changes in flow and thermal thickness around solid combustibles on heat release rate characteristics. Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is a solid combustible material that does not generate char during the combustion reaction. Hence, it was selected for the experiment, and the thermal penetration depth was calculated to distinguish the thermal thickness of PMMA. Furthermore, the thermal decomposition characteristics were analyzed by measuring the heat release rate measured during the combustion of PMMA. This was performed after generating the forced flow around the combustibles by setting the duct flow of the cone calorimeter to 12, 24, and 40 L/s. The results confirmed that the thermal release rate of the thermally thin combustible material was not significantly affected by the change in the surrounding flow. Hence, the thermally thick combustible material was significantly affected by the change in the flow rate.

  • The gun-type gas burner adopted in this study is generally composed of eight slits and swirl vanes. Thus, this paper is studied to investigate the effect of slits and swirl vanes on the turbulent flow fields in the horizontal plane of gas swirl burner with a cone type baffle plate measured by using X-probe from hot-wire anemometer system. This experiment is carried out at flow rate 450 $\ell$/min in the test section of subsonic wind tunnel. The axial mean velocity component in the case of burner model with only swirl vanes shows the characteristic that spreads more remarkably toward the radial direction than axial one, it does, however, directly opposite tendency in the case of burner model with only slits. Consequently. both slits and swirl vanes composing of gun-type gas burner play an important role in decrease of the speed near slits and increase of the flow speed in the central part of a burner because the biggest speed spurted from slits encircles rotational flow by swirl vanes and it drives main flow toward the axial direction. Moreover, the turbulent intensities and turbulent kinetic energy of gun-type gas burner are distributed with a fairly bigger size within X/R<0.6410 than burner models which have only slits or swirl vanes because the rotational flow by swirl vanes and the fast jet flow by slits increase flow mixing, diffusion, and mean velocity gradient effectively.

  • The extended analysis on the diverging flow through asymmetric membrane pores has been performed in this study. Afore rigorous equations of velocity profile relevant to the divergent slit and cone shaped channels, which are widely used as a general pore model, have been obtained by employing a creeping flow approach of Newtonian fluids. As a degree of asymmetry (i.e., diverging angle) is increased, the predicted flow function shifts Toward the center region due to the incorporated wall effect, so that the overall velocity profile becomes decreased. It is true, as expected, that when the divergent channel is in the low diverging angle limit, the channel flow results in the Poiseuillean fashion by utilizing a lubrication approximation. The flow rate equation of each type of channel has been developed from the combined solution of velocity profile and pressure fields. The effect of diverging flow on the flow rate enhancement has been remarkably predicted, in which the flow rate increases with the increase of pore asymmetry. The advantage of our theoretical results lies in the analytical expression for the diverging flow behavior through pore channels as well as its ability to play a fundamental role on the related membrane filtrations such as microfiltration and ultrafiltration.

  • The risks of debris flows caused by climate change have increased significantly around the world. Recently, landslide disaster prevention technology is more focused on the failure and post-failure dynamics to mitigate the hazards in flow-prone area. In particular, we should define the soil strength and flow characteristics to estimate the debris flow mobility in the mountainous regions in Korea. To do so, we selected known ancient landslides area: Inje, Pohang and Sangju debris flows. Firstly we measured physical and mechanical properties: liquidity index and undrained shear strength by fall cone penetrometer. From the test results, we found that there is a possible relationship between liquidity index and undrained shear strength, $C_{ur}=(1.2/I_L)^{3.3}$, in the selected areas, even though they were different in geological compositions. Assuming that the yield stress is equal to the undrained shear strength at the initiation of sliding, we examined the flow characteristics of weathered soils in Korea. When liquidity index is given as 1, 1.5 and 3.0, the debris flow motion of weathered soils is compared with that of mud-rich sediments, which are known as low-activity clays. At $I_L=1$, it seems that debris flow could reach approximately 250m after 5 minutes. As liquidity index increased from 1 to 3, the debris flow propagation of weathered soils is twice than that of low-activity clays. It may be due to the fact that soil masses mixed with the ambient water and then highly fragmented during flow, thereby leading to the high mobility. The results may help to predict the debris flow propagation and to develop disaster prevention technology at similar geological settings, especially for the weathered soils, in Korea.

  • The PFI dual injection engine using one injector per an intake port was developed for solving the DISI engine cost problem. Excellent fuel atomization and targeting of the PFI dual injection engine made enhancement on the fuel efficiency and engine power. In order to develop a PFI dual injection engine, characteristics of the in-cylinder flow and fuel behavior with respect to fuel injection angle and cone angle of the PFI dual injection engine was investigated. Numerical calculation was conducted to analyze 3D unsteady in-cylinder flow and fuel behavior using STAR-CD. The engine operating condition was 2,000rpm at WOT. As a result, the amount of intake air, evaporated fuel and fuel film according to injection angle and cone angle were presented. The results were influenced by interaction between injected fuel and intake port wall.
