  • The heat produced by the fission in the fuel of HANARO, 30 MW research reactor, is transferred from the primary cooling water to the secondary cooling water through heat exchangers, and the heat absorbed by the secondary cooling water is released into the atmosphere by the 33 MW cooling tower which is a mechanical induced draft and counter flow type. If the outlet temperature of cooling tower exceeds 33 of due to the loss of the cooling tower performance under reactor operation above $50\%$ of the full power, the reactor power should be reduced to half of the full power for safe operation. Therefore, the cooling capability of cooling tower should be maintained for the reactor to be normally operated. To predict the capability of cooling tower for full power reactor operation of 30 MW, the performance test of cooling tower was done at the reactor present power of 24 MW and the capability was respectively evaluated by characteristics and performance curves methods in accordance with the Code of Cooling Tower Institute of U.S.A. to confirm the reliability of evaluation. As a result, it was confirmed, through the results of each evaluation, that the cooling capability of cooling tower meets the design required heat load. Also, the equations of the performance and the characteristics curves of the cooling tower, based on the collected data during this performance test, was obtained for developing the calculation program to predict the cooling capability during reactor operation.

  • This study reveals that the user industry has a limited role as a source of technological capability in the case of the machine tools in Korea where the user industry is relatively mope advanced than other capital goods industry. The study examined the sources of technological capability in terms of migration of workforce and flow of product design information. Although the capital goods sector is generally regarded as being the sector where the user producer interaction is important the user industry failed to be the seed-bed of technological capability to develop machines. This study argues that this finding could have implications to the specificity of capital goods in a developing country.

  • This paper presents a sequential framework that calculates the total transfer capabilities of power transmission systems. The proposed algorithm enhances the Power System Transfer Capability Program (PSTCP) in conjunction with the Continuation Power Flow(CPF) that is used for steady-state voltage stability analysis and modified Arnoldi-Chebyshev method that calculates rightmost eigenvalues for small signal stability analysis. The proposed algorithm is applied to IEEE 39-bus test system to calculate TTC.

  • In this study, an ascending capability experiment was performed with largemouth bass and bluegill, which are exotic fish species inhabiting (the freshwaters) in Korea. The experiment was performed by dividing the subject fish into four groups according to their size and at four flow rates for each group. The number of fish passing through a reference line was analyzed by recording videos, and their swimming and ascending capabilities were observed by the naked eye. The number of fish passing through the reference line did not include those returning downstream within five minutes due to the high flow rate. The flow rate used for the analysis was the mean of the flow rate values measured at the left bank, the right bank, and in the middle of the stream. The results showed that the number of exotic fish migrating upstream decreased as the flow rate increased, regardless of the species and size of the fish. The comparison between the fish species showed that the ascending capability of bass was higher than that of bluegill, but the difference was not significant when considering the difference in the size of the fish. In addition, the upper limit flow velocity allowing the ascending of the exotic fish species was 1.11 m/s, when considering the fish returning to the downstream after the upstream migration and experimental error. The results of the experiment may be used as fundamental data for the blocking of fish and the management of exotic fish species by means of a high flow rate current. Further experiments, verification, and monitoring may need to be conducted continuously to determine whether the fish are able to pass through the reference line at a high flow rate, when they attain a high or cruising velocity. Additionally, the reaction of the fish species should be investigated by considering the response to external forces as well as pressure differences due to the flow rate.

  • A theoretical model for predicting the capability curve of cellulose acetate filter is derived. The pressure drop is expressed as a function of the filter dimensions, the tow fiber characteristics, the filter weight, the fluid flow rate, and a filter fiber factor. Where, the filter fiber factor is affected by the distribution of the tow fibers within the filter, the relative orientations of the tow fibers, and their cross-sectional shapes. The minimum and maximum fraction of solids in capability curves determined from experimental data. Also, the filter fiber factor is expressed as a function of the filter length, tow fiber length, and tow fiber diameter. Capability curves predicted by the suggested model in this work correspond well with capability curves by experimental data.

  • In this study, it is performed numerical simulation on multi-phase flow by means of CIP-CSI2 scheme. It is applied In a two-phase free surface flow problem at a high density ratio equivalent to that of an air-water system, for examining the computational capability. The method that is being developed and improved is a CIP(Constrained Interpolation Profile) and CSL2(Conservative Semi-Lagrangian) based Cartesian Grid Method.

  • In this paper the performance of meta-heuristics algorithms such as GA (Genetic Algorithm), DE (Differential Evolution), PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization) and SA (Simulated Annealing) for the problem of TTC enhancement using FACTS devices are compared. In addition to that in the assessment procedure of TTC two novel techniques are proposed. First the optimization algorithm which is used for TTC enhancement is simultaneously used for assessment of TTC. Second the power flow is done using Broyden - Shamanski method with Sherman - Morrison formula (BSS). The proposed approach is tested on WSCC 9 bus, IEEE 118 bus test systems and the results are compared with the conventional Repeated Power Flow (RPF) using Newton Raphson (NR) method which indicates that the proposed method provides better TTC enhancement and computational efficacy than the conventional procedure.

  • Previous counter-current flow limitation (CCFL) and critical heat flux (CHF) studies included investigations on the inlet entrance, inclined channel and gap effects for the most part. In this study, the local CHF correlation was presented to be used in the numerical analysis for the 3 dimensional hemispherical geometry. Also, first-principle analyses were performed to determine the maximum heat removal capability from the debris through the gap that may be formed during a core melt accident. The maximum heat removal capability by gap cooling can be applied in quantitatively assessing the severe accident management measures.

  • Two-dimensional prediction capability of several analysis codes, such as XFOIL, MSES, and KFLOW, is compared and analyzed based on computational results of airfoil flows. To this end the transition transport equations are coupled with the Navier-Stokes equations for the prediction of the natural transition and the separation-induced transition. Experimental data of aerodynamic coefficients are used for comparison with numerical results for the transitional flows. Numerical predictions using the transition transport model show a good agreement with experimental data. Discrepancies have been found in the prediction of the pressure drag are mainly caused by the difference in the far-field circulation correction methods.

  • This parer propose a new method to calculate nodal price which is very useful data in electric market under non-optimal operation. To calculate nodal price, we employ marginal cost and power flow, and consider network loss, generator capability, and line capability. The proposed method is applied to the test system and the usefulness is verified.
