  • An analysis of convective boiling heat transfer for refrigerant mixtures is performed for an annular flow to investigate the degradation of the heat transfer rate. Annular flow is selected in this study because a great portion of the evaporator in the refrigeration and air conditioning system is known to be in the annular flow regime. Mass transfer effect due to composition difference between liquid and vapor is included in this analysis, which is considered to be one of driving forces for the mass transfer at the interface. Due to the concentration gradient at the interface the mass transfer is interfered, so is the evaporative heat transfer at the interface. The mass transfer resistance makes the interface temperature slightly higher and, as a result, the heat transfer coefficients decrease compared with those without mass transfer effects. The degradatioin of the heat transfer rate reaches its maximum at a certain composition. The composition difference between vapor core and vapor at the interface has a direct effect on the temperature difference between the vapor core and the interface and the degradation of the heat transfer rate. Correction factor $C_{F}$ for the mixture effects is added to the correlation for pure substances and the flow boiling heat transfer coefficients can be calculated using the modified equation.n.

  • The performance of vertical and horizontal tubes with extended surface of rectangular and triangular cross section was investigated theoretically for boiling heat transfer. A simple method for numerical program assuming one-dimensional heat flow was used to predict the performance of these extended surface tubes. The object of this study was to predict the effects of the height, thickness, numbers and, clearance of the extended surface on boiling heat transfer. The results showed that extended surfaces are quite effective as compared to plane surfaces especially near the bum-out point and to promote heat flux in boiling heat transfer.

  • In this study, three-dimensional numerical calculations are peformed to simulate the flow and heat transfer in helically coiled tube steam generator employing a commercial CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) code. The problem considered herein includes the boiling phase change flow of tube side fluid and the single-phase counter-current flow of shell side hot fluid transferring heat to the tube side flow thru the tube wall. Detailed investigations are performed for both shell-side and tube-side flow fields in terms of density and volume fractions of each phase of fluids as well as for the tube wall heat transfer field in terms of heat transfer coefficients.

  • The flow boiling heat transfer of water was experimentally investigated on plain and sintered microporous surfaces in a mini-channel. The effects of microporous coating on flow boiling heat transfer of subcooled water were investigated in a 300 mm long mini-channel with a cross section of $20{\times}10mm^2$. The test section has sufficiently long entrance length of 300 mm which provides a fully-developed flow before the channel inlet. The bottom side of the channel was heated by a copper block assembled with a high-density cartridge heater and other sides of the channel were insulated. The microporous surface was fabricated by sintering copper particles with the average particle size of $50{\mu}m$ on the top side of the copper block. Heat transfer measurement was conducted at the mass flux of $208kg/m^2s$ and the heat flux up to $500kW/m^2$. Microporous coated surface showed an earlier boiling incipience compared with plain surface regardless of the mass flux. Microporous coating were significantly attributed to local wall temperature and local heat transfer coefficient for flow boiling.

  • Two-phase flow and heat transfer characteristics during the reflood phase of a single heated rod in the KHU reflood experimental facility were examined. Two-phase flow behavior during the reflooding experiment was carefully visualized along with transient temperature measurement at a point inside the heated rod. By numerically solving one-dimensional inverse heat conduction equation using the measured temperature data, time-resolved wall heat flux and temperature histories at the interface of the heated rod and coolant were obtained. Once water coolant was injected into the test section from the bottom to reflood the heated rod of >700℃, vast vapor bubbles and droplets were generated near the reflood front and dispersed flow film boiling consisted of continuous vapor flow and tiny liquid droplets appeared in the upper part. Following the dispersed flow film boiling, inverted annular/slug/churn flow film boiling regimes were sequentially observed and the wall temperature gradually decreased. When so-called minimum film boiling temperature reached, the stable vapor film between the heated rod and coolant was suddenly collapsed, resulting in the quenching transition from film boiling into nucleate boiling. The moving speed of the quench front measured in the present study showed a good agreement with prediction by a correlation in literature. The obtained results revealed that typical two-phase flow and heat transfer behaviors during the reflood phase of overheated fuel rods in light water nuclear reactors are well reproduced in the KHU facility. Thus, the verified reflood experimental facility can be used to explore the effects of other affecting parameters, such as CRUD, on the reflood heat transfer behaviors in practical nuclear reactors.

  • An experimental study on saturated flow boiling heat transfer of R113 was peformed in a vertical narrow rectangular channel with offset strip fins. Two-phase pressure gradients and boiling heat transfer coefficients in an electrically heated test section were measured in the range of quality $0{\sim}0.6$, mass flux $17{\sim}43kg/m^{2}s$, and heat flux of $500{\sim}3,000W/m^2$ Two-phase friction multipliers were determined as a function of Lockhart-Martinelli parameter. Local boiling heat transfer coefficients were analysed in terms of mass flux, heat flux and local vapor quality. Correlation for boiling heat transfer coefficients was proposed, which was in good agreement with experimental data.

  • The effect of oil on flow boiling of R-123 in a plain tube bundles was experimentally investigated for a range of quality and heat flux. It is shown that the heat transfer coefficient decreased as the oil concentration increased. Comparison with the previous pool boiling data reveals that the reduction of heat transfer coefficient by oil is more pronounced in pool boiling, and the difference increased with the increase of oil concentration and heat flux. Within the experimental range, the variation of mass flux or quality has negligible effect on the heat transfer coefficient.

  • This paper reports an experimental study on flow boiling of pure refrigerants R l34a and R l23 and their mixtures in a uniformly heated horizontal tube. The flow pattern was observed through tubular sight glasses with an internal diameter of 10㎜ located at the inlet and outlet of the test section. Tests were run at a pressure of 0.6 MPa in the heat flux ranges of 5-50㎾/㎡, vapor quality 0-100 percent and mass velocity of 150-600㎏/㎡s. Both in the nucleate boiling-dominant region at low quality and in the two-phase convective evaporation region at higher quality where nucleation is supposed to be fully suppressed, the heat transfer coefficient for the mixture was lower than that for an equivalent pure component with the same physical properties as the mixture. The reduction of the heat transfer coefficient in mixture is explained by such mechanisms as mass transfer resistance and non-linear variation in physical properties etc. In this study, the contribution of convective evaporation, which is obtained for pure refrigerants under the suppression of nucleate boiling, is multiplied by the composition factor by Singal et al. (1984). On the basis of Chen's superposition model, a new correlation is presented for heat transfer coefficients of mixture.

  • Mist cooling is widely employed as a cooling technique of high temperature surfaces, and it has heat transfer characteristics similar to boiling heat transfer which has the convection, nucleate and film boiling regions. In the present study, mist cooling heat transfer was experimentally investigated for the mist flow impacting on the heated surfaces of mico-fins. The mist flow was generated by supersonic vibration. Experiments were conducted under the test conditions of droplet flow rate, $Q=6.02{\times}10^{-9}{\sim}3.47{\times}10^{-8}\;m^3/s$ and liquid temperature, $T_f=30{\sim}35^{\circ}C$. From the experimental results, it is found that an increase in the droplet flow rate improves mist cooling heat transfer in the both case of smooth surface and surfaces of micro-fins. Micro-fins surfaces enhance the mist cooling heat transfer. Besides, the experimental results show that an increase in the droplet flow rate decrease the heat transfer efficiency of mist cooling.

  • The two-phase flow is observed in power plants, chemical process plants, and refrigeration systems etc., and it is very important to solve the heat transfer mechanism of a boiler, an automic reactor, a condenser and various types of evaporators. Recently, the problem of two phase heat transfer is braught up in many regions with development of energy saving technique. In flow boiling system it is necessary to store data in each condition because the heat transfer characteristics of flow boiling region vary by the change of flow pattern and the magnetude of heat flux to tube length, and be subtly affected by the flow and heating condition. So basic study for knowing flow pattern in heat transfer region and the relation between heat transfer characteristic and flow condition is desired to accumulate data in wide variety of liquid and flow system in the study of heat transfer of two phase flow. In this study R-113 was selected as working fluid whose properties were programmed by least square method, and experiment was conducted in the region of mass flow $1.628{\times}10^6$~$4.884{\times}10^6$/kg/$m^2$hr with inlet subcooling 10~3$0^{\circ}C$, sustaining test section inlet pressure to 1.5kg$_f$/$cm^2$abs.
