The application of flexo printed ONP and OCC leads to brightness decrease of deinked stock in ONP recycling system. The largest problems are due to accumulation of flexo ink & introduction of brown fibers. All these are emphasized by variations in the amount of flexo printed ONP and OCC in recovered ONP stock. Most of the brightness problems caused by flexo ink can be helped and solved by applying a proper polyelectrolytes as coagulation agent and flocculation agent. This requires exact evaluation of sedimentation or dissolved air flotation potentials of flexo ink and polyelectrolytes. Effect of bleaching chemical (H2O2) addition level on the increase of brightness of OCC included stock has been investigated by lab scale test.
An innovative batch electrolytic system consisted of electrolytic basin, which was equipped with DSA(Dimensionally Stable Anode) type insoluble electrode, Ti/IrO2 anode and H-C metal cathode, and flotation separator was developed for the efficient treatment of shipboard emulsified oily wastewater. The electorod cleance and current density of elecrolytic basin to ensure maximum treatment efficiency of oily wastewater was evaluated as 6 mm, 3 A/dm3, respectively. The electrolytic efficiency of oily wastewater was affected by the operationtemperature, and it means that the temperature controller to ensure the stabiity of the process is required. The conductivity in the electrolytic basin was increased with the percentage of sea water in the oily wastewater, and over 90% of treatment efficiency of oily wastewater could be obtained at 7% of sea water. The oil removal rate was increased according to the increase of the quantity of electricity, and the maximum value of electrilyic rate constant was 288 mgoil/A.min. The information obtained from this study might be used for development of an efficient continuous electrolytic system treating the emulsified oily wastewater.
The effect of wettability of deinking agents which formed with various nonionic surfactants against the pulp fibers and ink particles were studied, And the effect of flotation processes on the deinking were also investigated. The wettabilities of the deinking agents against the water and ink particles were measured by Washburn tube and sessile drop techniques, respectively. As the water absorption increased (i.e., hydrophilicity increased), the ink removal increased, which indicates that the ink removal is strongly affected by the detachment process due to the swelling of the pulp. Also, when the contact angle of air/ink/deinking agent increased, the hydrophobicity of the ink particles increased, the efficiency of the ink removal and the brightness increased.
Dissolved Air flotation (DAF) has become increasingly important in the field of drinking water treatment, however, the research to investigate the mechanism of collision between bubble and particle has been limited. The electrostatic repulsion forces between them are critical to collide with each other. Zetapotential of bubble and particle show their electrostatic condition. In this research, a setup to measure the zetapotential of rising microbubble is made using electrophoresis method and measured ZP of bubble in our Lab. The results show the effect of pH on zetapotential of bubble. The findings from this research are compared with other results. It will he helpful to understand and explain the mechanism of collisions between bubble and particle on different conditions of bubble charge in DAF process.
Cellulolytic enzymes were prepared from alkaline resistant microorganisms which were newly screened from calcic soil. Characteristics of enzymes and enzymatic deinking efficiency of wastepaper were investigated. The results were summarized as fellows: 1. The recovery rate of crude enzyme was 93.7% in Bio-B and 57.4% in Bio-F. 2. The protein content in crude enzymes was lowest and the thermal stability of crude enzymes was highest in Bio-F. 3. The brightness gain of Bio-F deinked pulp was best in ONP and Bio-B deinked pulp was best in MOW. 4. The reject yield was increased with enzymatic deinking flotation process. 5. The residual ink area of paper was increased with enzymatic deinking and large size of ink particles were remained in paper.
Toner used in xerographic printing process is hydrophobic powder with low surface energy. The toner ink film fused on paper surface can be efficiently detached from a fiber surface during pulping, but it does not fragment again into fine toner particles. Ink agglomerates that result have too large particle size to be deinked by flotation. The purpose of this study is to enhance toner agglomeration using 1-octadecanol for improving the toner removal by screening. The effect of pH, pulping temperature, and 1-octadecanol on toner agglomeration and removal by screening was investigated using image analysis methods. Results showed that the size of toner agglomerates increased substantially when pulping was carried out at high temperature under acidic condition. When toner agglomerates showed spherical shape, the particle removal efficiency of screening was improved.
Bioreactors are devices used by sewage treatment plants to process sewage and which produce active sludge, and sediments separated by solid-liquid are treated in anaerobic digestion tanks. In anaerobic digestion tanks, the volume of active sludge deposits is reduced and biogas is produced. After dehydrating the digestive sludge generated after anaerobic digestion, anaerobic digested wastewater, which features a high concentration of organic matters, is generated. In this study, the decomposition of organic carbon and nitrogen was studied by advanced oxidation process. Ozone-microbubble flotation process was used for oxidation pretreatment. During ozonation, the TOC decreased by 11.6%. After ozone treatment, the TOC decreased and the removal rate reached 80.4% as a result of the Ultra Violet-Advanced Oxidation Process (UV-AOP). The results with regard to organic substances before and after treatment differed depending on the organic carbon index, such as CODMn, CODCr, and TOC. Those indexes did not change significantly in ozone treatment, but decreased significantly after the UV-AOP process as the linkage treatment, and were removed by up to 39.1%, 15.2%, and 80.4%, respectively. It was confirmed that biodegradability was improved according to the ratio of CODMn to TOC. As for the nitrogen component, the ammonia nitrogen component showed a level of 3.2×102 mg/L or more, and the content was maintained at 80% even after treatment. Since most of the contaminants are removed from the treated water and its transparency is high, this water can be utilized as a resource that contains high concentrations of nitrogen.
This study was done in an effort to evaluate the possibility of recyclability of moisture-proof paper. Because it is difficult to recycle laminated moisture-proof paper, a mixture of styrene-butadiene latex(SB latex) and wax emulsion was used as moisture-proof paper chemicals. A bar coater was applied to make moisture-proof paper and the coated weight was 17 g/$m^2$. The mixing ratios of SB latex to wax emulsion were 85 : 15, 87 : 13, and 90 : 10, respectively. It was observed that the moisture-proof paper treated with SB latex and wax emulsion at the appropriate ratio could be recycled effectively. The moisture-proof paper was similar to base paper in degree of pulping, and there was no significant difference in dispersion between moisture-proof paper and base paper. Most of wax particle which caused the spots during drying process could be removed by flotation process. Tensile strength and tear strength of handsheets made of both moisture-proof paper and base paper after pulping was measured to examine the fiber bonding and no significant difference in mechanical properties was observed.

A new technique for recycling process water was developed in order to reduce the calcium hardness of the closed OCC recycling system. Calcium ions present in the white water were precipitated as calcium carbonate by a reaction with sodium carbonate and the CaCO$_3$precipitates were easily removed from the system by a dissolved air flotation(DAF) method. After the DAF stage, CO$_2$-gas was purged into the water because the pH of Na$_2$CO$_3$-treated white water was reduced to neutral by CO$_2$gas. Since CaCO$_3$precipitate tends to stick onto the fine fiber surface and then is selectively removed from the water, a proper amount of suspended solid in the process water acts as an important factor in deciding the removal efficiency. By the application of Na$_2$CO$_3$addition - DAF - CO$_2$purging to the short circulated white water the calcium hardness was significantly reduced by 92% and more. The removal of calcium ions with fine fibers led to drainage improvement, reduction of fresh water consumption, and enhanced efficiency of wet-end chemicals.
