Surfactant enhanced in-situ soil flushing was peformed to remediate the soil and groundwater at an oil contaminated site, and the effluent solution was treated by the chemical treatment process including DAF(Dissolved Air Flotation). A section from the contaminated site(4.5m$\times$4.5m$\times$6.0m) was selected for the research, which was composed of heterogeneous sandy and silt-sandy soils with average Hydraulic conductivity of 2.0$\times$10$^{-4}$ cm/sec. Two percent of sorbitan monooleate(POE 20) and 0.07% of iso-prophyl alcohol were mixed for the surfactant solution and 3 pore volumes of surfactant solution were injected to remove oil from the contaminant section. Four injection wells and two extraction wells were built in the section to flush surfactant solution. Water samples taken from extraction wells and the storage tank were analyzed by GC(gas-chromatography) for TPH concentration with different time. Five pore volumes of solution were extracted while TPH concentration in soil and groundwater at the section were below the Waste Water Discharge Limit(WWDL). Total 18.5kg of oil (TPH) was removed from the section. The concentration of heavy metals in the effluent solution also increased with the increase of TPH concentration, suggesting that the surfactant enhanced in-situ flushing be available to remove not only oil but heavy metals from contaminated sites. Results suggest that in-situ soil flushing and chemical treatment process including DAF could be a successful process to remediate contaminated sites distributed in Korea.
This study aims to suggest wastewater treatment options for diaper recycling by identifying characteristic analysis of wastewater from diaper recycling process and efficiency evaluation of wastewater treatment units. The wastewater characteristic analysis showed that the concentration of organic pollutants and ionic materials were very high comparing to seawater. Through the investigation of similar wastewater treatment, six treatment units were identified to reduce pollutants. It is found UF(ultra-filtration), DAF(dissolved air flotation), fenton oxidation, electro-coagulation and chemical-coagulation are effective in reducing organic pollutants while membrane system and ion exchanger are effective in reducing ionic materials. Even though the target of water quality should be secured in terms of managing organic pollutants level, the application of treatment unit for reducing ionic material needs lots of considerations. This result suggests that reuse of pulping wastewater after controlling organic pollutants is better than direct discharge of pulping wastewater. To select the appropriate wastewater treatment unit, an economic analysis about operation condition, wastewater flow, cost, efficiency should be considered.
Dissolved air flotation (DAF) is an effective solid/liquid separation process for low density floc particles such as algal, color-alum and clay-alum flocs produced from low turbidity water. The removal of taste and odor-causing organics (2-mthylisoboneol and geosmin) originating from algae in drinking water is a local and worldwide concern. Although DAF has been effectively applied for the removal of suspended solid, its application for the treatment of dissolved organic carbon is very limited. In this study, a new hybrid system consisting of adsorption and DAF processes was introduced for the simultaneous removal of algae and taste and odor-causing organics. Powdered activated carbon (PAC) was used as an adsorbent. In this proposed system, the major concern of eliminating the spent PAC from the system was also addressed. It was found that zeta potential of algae and PAC was increased with coagulant dosage, and the removal efficiency in DAF was also enhanced up to 90~95% under the given experimental conditions. Based on this study, the hybrid process was found to be a promising technology for the simultaneous removal of algae and dissolved organic pollutants.
New problems have been recently posed on the abnormal foaming (Scum) in an aeration tank and the sludge flotation in a final sedimentation tank during the activated sludge process. However, the activities of the causing bacteria, Nocardia-amarae in an aeration tank have not been searched out at all. Therefore, in this article the activities of Nocardia-amarae in an aeration tank have been closely examined by means of the changes of (F/M) ratio, SRT and inflowing substrate using continuous type and fed-batch type. Summarized results of experiments are as follows. 1. Regrading continuous culture when synthetic wastewater was used substrate neither the increase in the number of Nocardia-amarae in the aeration tank nor the Occurrence of Scum was observed. 2. In the case of fed-batch culture, Nocardia-amarae in the aeration tank increased due to the partial change in substrate and the effect of SRT was significant. 3. Once the scum was formed and the quantity of added Nocardia-amarae and substrate were not changed, the effect of STR was not significant.
Presence of small amount of old newspapers printed with waterbased flexographic inks leads to a significant loss of brightness of the deinked pulp by flotation process. Recently there has been an increased interests in employing neutral deinking processes to solve the problems associated with waterbased flexo ink. A comparative experimental study was performed to evaluate the efficiency of neutral deinking and conventional alkaline deinking for ONP furnishes contaminated with flexo ink. Effects of the deinking processes on pulp quality and white water characteristics were examined. It was shown that neutral deinking would provide significant improvement in brightness, yield, and freeness as compared with conventional alkaline deinking. There was no increase in brightness when OMG was added in the furnish up to 20 %, and it was attributed to the redeposition of flexo inks on chemical pulp fibers.
A study was made on the processing of domestic blast furnace slag by flotation and chemical purification for the use of slag as a raw material in making soda lime glasses. Feasibility study has been made for the use of reprocessing slag as a source material for both coloring and chemical components (such as CaO, $Al_2O_3$, MgO and etc.) in the glass making process. Chemical composition of chemically purified slags ranges; $SiO_2$ 34.5~37.5, $Al_2O_3$, 16.2~14.1, $Fe_2O_3$ 0.33~0.14, CaO 34.5~38.8, MgO 4.0~5.2, NmO 0.16~0.39, $TiO_2$ 0.23~0.35, S 0.08~0.42, ignition loss 3.3~8.4 and others 0.48~0.51%. It was found that either amber or greenish color could be easily obtained with the addition of salg up to 24%, however the slag addition to glass batches much impaired the transmitancy of glass products, thus a glass made with 7% slag addition showed 82% in transmitancy value at 510 nm.

The application of flexo printed ONP and OCC leads to brightness decrease of deinked stock in ONP recycling system. The largest problems are due to accumulation of flexo ink & introduction of brown fibers. All these are emphasized by variations in the amount of flexo printed ONP and OCC in recovered ONP stock. Most of the brightness problems caused by flexo ink can be helped and solved by applying a proper polyelectrolytes as coagulation agent and flocculation agent. This requires exact evaluation of sedimentation or dissolved air flotation potentials of flexo ink and polyelectrolytes. Effect of bleaching chemical (H2O2) addition level on the increase of brightness of OCC included stock has been investigated by lab scale test.
