This study was carried out to compare a conventional alkaline flotation deinking conditions with neutral deinking conditions with and without enzyme addition with respect to the ink removal efficiency and theflotation deinking filtrate quality such as chemical oxygen demand, cationic demand, suspended solids. Based on ink removal rate the neutral deinking condition without enzyme was better than the alkaline deinking condition, and the neutral deinking with enzyme addition turned out to be the best. The brightness of the deinked pulp was found to be the same trend as the ink removal rate. Flotation reject rate for the neutral deinking condition without enzyme was higher than that of the alkaline deinking condition, but that of the neutral deinking condition with enzyme was lower than that of the alkaline and the neutral deinking condition without enzyme. On the freeness of the deinked pulp, the neutral deinking condition with enzyme had the highest value and the alkaline deinking condition had the lowest value among the conditions tested. On the filtrate of the flotation stage, the cationic polymer demand of the neutral deinking condition with enzyme was much lower than the other conditions. Suspended solids and chemical exygen demand for the neutral flotation deinking filtrate was lower than those of the alkaline flotation deinking filtrate.
Presence of old newspapers printed with waterbased flexographic inks leads to a significant loss of brightness of the deinked pulp by flotation process. It has been shown that neutral or acidic flotation deinking has many advantages in recycling of flexo printed newsprints. A comparative experimental study was performed to evaluate the deinking efficiency of three alcohol type deinking agents in flotation deinking of flexo printed newspapers. Zeta potential of neutral deinked pulp was less negative than alkaline deinked pulp. Also neutral deinking was advantages in reducing turbidity, COD, and cationic de-mands of deinking process water.
Presence of small amount of old newsprints printed with waterbased flexographic inks leads to a significant loss brightness of the deinked pulp by flotation process. Recently there has been an increased interest in employing neutral deinking processes to solve the problems associated with waterbased flexo ink. A comparative experimental study was performed to evaluate the efficiency of neutral deinking and conventional alkaline deinking for ONP furnishes contaminated with flexo ink. It was shown that neutral deinking provides significant improvements in brightness, yield and freeness as compared with alkaline deinking. Flotation efficiency was different depending upon the type of surfactants used in neutral deinking. The result of this study showed that alcohol type surfactant is superior to fatty acid type surfactant in neutral deinking efficiency.
Although cleaner and cheaper deinking of ONP could be performed at the neutral or low alkaline condition excessive loss from froth-flotation is unavoidable and so reduction of alkali or caustic soda dosage sacrifices recycling yield. Now the new trade-off regarding alkali dosage versus flotation yield is urgently required in order to set the optimized neutral or low alkaline deinking process of ONP. Lipase from Thermomyces Lanuginosus has an effect on desizing and deacetylation reaction and it could be applied to the stock of pre flotation secondary stage in order to reduce the flotation reject without the sacrifice of optical properties of flotation accepts. Instead of inorganic base, lipase could be applied as a biochemical catalyst for the selective modification of valuable hydrophobic particles in deinking stock, for example cellulose fines and inorganic fillers covered by hydrophobic additives or contaminants. When the enzymatic hydrolysis of ester bond could be made on the surface of hydrophobic particulates, unwanted float of fine particles could be prevented. Now the enhancement of flotation selectivity or the modification of the hydrophobicity of deinking stock is expected to be promoted by the enzymatic pre treatment. And the reduction of recycling cost with the saves of raw material, recovered paper would be possible as a result.
Flotation deinking is a common practice for removing ink from recovered paper, and it is becoming a key process in many recycling paper mills. Flotation deinking was successfully introduced to the paper recycling industry in the 1980s, and its applications in wax removal, stickies control, and fiber fractionation have attracted great research interest. A successful flotation process has three major efficient subprocesses: the detachment of the ink particles from the fibers, the effective adhesion of the ink particles onto air bubble surfaces, and the removal of froth and ink particles from flotation cells. Surfactants can affect these subprocesses either positively or negatively. To understand how a surfactant can positively and negatively affect the flotation deinking process, the basic chemistry of surfactant in solution should be discussed.
The recycling rate of recovered paper in Korea is the highest in the world, 92%, but remanufacturing yield is low due to the extremely poor quality of the paper. The poor quality, in turn, influences to the reject amount in deinking process. To increase the yield of old newspaper recycling process, hydrophobic degree of inorganic pigments of deinking stock must be reduced. To determine the hydrophobicity, Pitch Potential Deposit Tester (PDT) was newly designed and applied with respect to the SB latex property of various quality used in Korea; its hydrophobic degree according to Tg, gel content, charge and particle size of latex and optimum designing condition of SB latex. And below are the conclusions: 1. The reason of excessive reject from old newspaper deinking process for total amount of printed ink is loss of inorganic pigments. When lipase, a biochemical catalyst, was applied with the purpose of preventing inorganic pigments loss about more than 70% of total reject weight and promoting hydration of pulp for deinking, deinking process yield of pre flotation secondary stage increased remarkably without any changes of deinking efficiency. 2. Lipase improved deinking stock by cutting ester linkage on surface of hydrophobic materials to promote its hydration. From this, it reached the conclusion that hydration degree of stock exercises significant effect on flotation deinking process yield. 3. Inorganic alkali promotes hydration of deinking stock. But there have been needs for more fundamental measures other than inorganic alkali of promoting hydration for yield improvement. For this, this study intended to find out reasons of chemical properties change on surface of hydrophobic material by change of pH. 4. Pitch Deposit Test (PDT) was performed for understanding principle of why surface of coating flake from OMG is hydrophobic and why it becomes hydrophilic when pH of stock is alkaline. As a result of this test, it is determined that swelling property by change of pH of latex film, which were used as coating adhesive is the reason for hydrophobic change. 5. Hydrophilicity of coating flake increased with hydrophilic pigments. And as more of SB Latex adhesive was used and higher of calcium hardness of stock became, its hydrophilicity decreased. SB Latex adhesive film is reformed by mechanical friction. For having hydrophilicity under neutral pH, strong bruising action such as kneading is required. 6. Because swelling of adhesive film decreases as Tg of SB latex gets lower and mean diameter gets smaller, it shows hydrophobicity under neutral pH. This lowers hydrophilicity of coating flake, which leads to easy elimination with flotation reject on DIP process. Therefore, for improving future flotation yield, it is necessary to develop to use eco-friendly clean SB latex by raising Tg and increasing mean diameter for recycling, and as a result, to reduce excessive loss of coating flake as a reject from deinking process.
Nowadays blending ratio of OMG (old magazine) in recovered paper used for manufacturing newspaper have been increased. When large amount of OMG is consumed in newsprint mill, brightness can be improved by inorganic pigments of coating layer. On the other hand decrease in yield of deinking process will be encountered because the pigments can be removed as reject of froth flotation process. Therefore selection of the optimal deinking agent is an important. Non-ionic surfactant have been used widely in newsprint mill. Non-ionic surfactant has amphoteric characteristics. Hydrophilic group is ethylene and propylene oxide that can induce hydrogen bonding with water molecules. In this regard, cloud point is an important parameter in order to control efficiency of deinking process because hydration of the hydrophobic group can be varied according to temperature of a system. In this study, deinking properties of ONP at high blending ratio of OMG was analyzed according to cloud points of non-ionic surfactants. $L^*$, $a^*$, $b^*$, brightness and effective residual ink concentration did not affected by the change of cloud points. Especially, flotation reject decreased significantly according to increase in cloud point of the non-ionic surfactant. Consequently, when a nonionic surfactant having a cloud point higher than the temperature of the system is used, properties of the deinked pulp can be maintained and yield of deinking process can be improved.
The flexography ink has disadvantage in a deinking process because it tends to form too fine particles in alkali condition to be removed in flotation deinking. The influence of pH conditions on the particle size of phthalocyanine cyan ink used for flexo-printing was investigated to see the effect of pH conditions on flexography ink dispersion. Flexography ink particles prepared by grinding dried ink films were used in this experiment. Greater reduction of the ink particle size was noticed under alkaline pH condition, which was attributed to dissolution of resin component of the ink. Adsorption behavior of flexography ink onto pigment particles was examined using clay and talc as substrate pigments. Pretreatment of inorganic pigments with a cationic poly-DADMAC increased the surface adsorption of flexography ink particles, which improved the removal of the inks by centrifugal sedimentation of inorganic pigments. Most efficient removal of the ink particles was achieved when an optimal addition level of the cationic polymer was used for pretreatment of inorganic pigments, and this optimal addition level corresponds to the surface saturation point of the polyelectrolyte. Adsorption of flexography ink particles onto inorganic pigments improved the ink removal in flotation deinking since the pigment particles has the optimal particle size for flotation deinking.
The objective of this study was to investigate the enzymatic deinking technology. Office recycled papers such as computer printed out(CPO) and white ledger(WL) were used in the evaluation of four different deinking conditions ; alkaline deinking , neutral deinking and enzymatic deinking at alkaline and neutral pH. Filltering pads were prepared after flotation deinking to measure brighteness gain and ink removal efficiency. Three different surfactants were also used in the evaluation of deinking efficiency including surface chemical properties by measuring foam height and stability, surface tension and cloud point of views. The results indicated that the neutral deinking method with enzyme and surfactant addition showed highest deinking efficiency of office recycled papers.
MOW (Mixed Office Waste) mainly consisted of photocopied paper is being recycled to produce tissue or fine paper products. Toner particles that are fused and set on paper surface in photocopying process turns into large and plate-shaped particles after repulping which prevents them to be removed effectively in flotation deinking. The immediate purpose of this study is to find the effective deinking technology that increases the recycling potential of photocopied papers for manufacturing tissue and fine paper products. In this study the effects of pulping temperature and the type of hydrophobic groups of nonionic surfactants on the deinking efficiency of photocopied paper has been investigated. Particle size distribution of the toner particles after pulping and flotation, brightness, yield and ash removal were investigated. The size of toner particles after pulping increased as the pulping temperature was increased. When pulping at the low temperature finer toner particles were generated, however, greater amount of toner particles was found to attach to the fiber. When the pulping temperature was greater than Tg of the toner, the amount of coarse hairy particles increased. When nonionic surfactants with a double bond in hydrophobic groups were used, toner removal efficiency, brightness and ash removal were increased. As the addition level of surfactant was increased, yield decreased rather sharply without improving brightness.
