  • Dissolved air flotation (OAF) is a solid-liquid separation system that uses fine bubbles rising from bottom to remove particles in water. In this study, we investigated the effect of L/W (L; Length, W; Width) on the hydro-dynamic behavior in DAF system using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) and ADV (Acoustic Doppler Velocimetry) technique. The factual full-scale DAF system, L/W ratio of 1:1, was selected and various L/W ratio (2:1, 3:1, 4:1 and 5:1) conditions were simulated with CFD. For modelling, 2-phase (gas-liquid) flow equations for the conservation of mass, momentum and turbulence quantities were solved using an Eulerian-Eulerian approach based on the assumption that very small particle is applied in the DAF system. Also, for verification of CFD simulation results, we measured the factual velocity at some points in the full-scale DAF system with ADV technique. Both the simulation and the measurement results were in good accordance with each other. As the results of this study, we concluded that L/W ratio and outlet geometry play important role for flow pattern and fine bubble distribution in the flotation zone. In the ratio of 1:1, the dead zone is less than those in other cases. On the other hands, in the ration of 3:1, the fine bubbles were more evenly distributed.

  • Low pressure air flotation (LAF) pilot plant for sludge thickening was installed in Chung Nam N.S. municipal waste water treatment plant to verify its application possibility. Effects of operating conditions such as coagulant dosages and microbubble water ratio on thickening of the mixed sludge were examined. Microbubbles which were generated in the chamber of $1.5kgf/cm^2$ by high speed collision method with foaming agent were used to float sludge. Solid loading of $30kg/m^2/hr$, solid contents in thickened sludge of 60,300 mg/L and SS removal efficiency of 99% were obtained through long period operating LAF in conditions of mixed sludge concentration of 14,400 mg/L, coagulant dosage of 27.6 mg/L, foaming agent addition of 4.0 mg/L and microbubble water injection ratio of 9.7%.

  • The study is to propose the optimal separation technique of heavy metals (Pb and Zn) contaminated in soil for improving the removal efficiency by various applicable techniques. The heavy metal contaminated soil samples near abandoned mine X-1 and X-2 were used for the study. Firstly, the wet classification process was shown more than 80% of removal efficiency for lead and zinc. Meanwhile, the magnetic separation process was shown low removal efficiency for lead and zincs because those heavy metals were non-magnetic materials. For the next step, the flotation separation process was shown approximately 24.4% of removal efficiency for zinc, while the gravity concentration process was shown approximately 57% of removal efficiency for lead, and 19.9% of removal efficiency for zinc, respectively. Therefore, zinc contaminated in soil would be effectively treated by the combination technique of the wet classification and the flotation technique. Meanwhile, lead contaminated in soil would be effectively treated by the combination technique of the wet classification process and the flotation process. Furthermore, the extraction of organic matter was shown more effective with aeration, 3% of hydrogen peroxide and 3% of lime such as calcium hydroxide.

  • In the coagulation/sedimentation (C/S) process of the water treatment process, the inflow of massive algal bloom causes many problems including fouling of filter media. This study was conducted to find out the way to remove the algae's harmful effects by addition of pre-treatment prior to C/S process. Many Jar-tests were conducted such as (1) ACF (Algae Coagulation Flotation) process using natural algae coagulant (Water $Health^{(R)}$), (2) ACF + C/S process and (3) C/S process with a variety of conditions using cultured algae. The average values of turbidity were (1) 0.42 NTU for ACF process, (2) 0.13 NTU for ACF + C/S process and (3) 0.25 NTU for C/S process. It was shown that the treatment efficiency of ACF process could get low turbidity results, and ACF + C/S process could achieve more efficient results than those of C/S process. Any negative effects of ACF process to the efficiency of C/S process were not observed in ACF + C/S process. In order to reduce the unfavorable effects of algae, it was found out that the introduction of ACF process in the forms of (1) ACF or (2) ACF + C/S could be one of the effective and alternative solutions.

  • White waste papers are very important resources in the paper industry, but their use is limited because of the residual of fluorescent whitening agent (FWA). So the removal of FWAs from waste paper is an important task in the recycling process to improve the use of recycled resources. In this study, we focused on the FWAs used for surface treatments and carried out physical and chemical treatments to remove them from white waste papers. The white waste papers were disintegrated with a surfactant in different pH and temperature conditions, and then handsheets were made for the measurement of the fluorescence index, which is proportional to the amount of FWAs on papers. The effect of the flotation process on the removal of FWAs after disintegration was also investigated. The fluorescence index decreased as the disintegration time increased, but over a relatively long time, the fluorescence index increased again, which indicated the readsorption of the FWAs detached from the cellulosic fibers of the white waste papers. The lowest fluorescence index was shown when the waste papers were disintegrated with a 0.3% surfactant addition at pH 10 and at $45^{\circ}C$. However, the flotation treatment was not effective, because the flotation induced contact between the detached FWAs and the cellulosic fibers, and re-adsorption occurred.

  • The total amount of graphite reserves in Korea is about 260 thousand tons. Graphite larks international competitiveness it is mined in only few mines, but recently the demand of portable electronic has increased. Therefore a research for manufacturing domestic high purity graphite is necessary because all of high purity graphite used electrode of 2nd batter depends on expensive importation. A preprocessing level for producing high purity graphite, flotation was conducted using microbubble column machine. In this research $D_{50}=10.314{\mu}m$ sample was used which was produced after grinding 29.50% F.C. primary crushing sample($D_{50}=69.393{\mu}m$) for 20 minutes through attrition mill. As a result using this sample, product above 95% F.C. with recovery over 90% was obtained with only after first stage process through the microbubble column.

  • In recovering copper from the copper converter slag, various separation methods, such as flotation, sieving and magnetic separation had been tried. The copper converter slag used in this study was prepared in two ways, i.e. 2 hour cooled and 10 hour cooled. From the flotation of copper slag, 45% Cu concentrate is obtained and the amount of copper recovery is about 93%. Before the flotation, copper in the slag could be also pre-recovered using sieving and separation. It is also found that as the content of copper in the concentrate increa-ses, that of arsenic increase, while zinc and iron contents decrease.

  • The Electrocoagulation-Flotation (ECF) process has great potential in wastewater treatment. ECF technology is effective in the removal of colloidal particles, oil-water emulsion, organic pollutants such as microalgae, and heavy metals. Numerous studies have been conducted on ECF; however, many of them used a conventional plate-type aluminum anode. In this study, we determined the effect of changing operational parameters such as power supply time, applied current, NaCl concentration, and pH on the turbidity removal efficiency of kaoline. We also determined the effects of different electrolyte types (NaCl, $MgSO_4$, $CaCl_2$, $Na_2SO_4$, and tap water), as well as the differences caused by using a plate-type and mesh-type aluminum anode, on the turbidity removal efficiency. The results showed that the optimal values of ECF time, applied current, NaCl concentration, and pH were 5 min, 0.35 A, 0.4 g/L NaCl in distilled water, and pH 7, respectively. The results also revealed that the turbidity removal efficiency of kaoline in different electrolytes decreased in the following sequence, given the same conductivity: tap water > $CaCl_2$ > $MgSO_4$ > NaCl > $Na_2SO_4$. The turbidity removal efficiency of the mesh-type aluminum anode was significantly greater than the plate-type aluminum anode.
