  • The flooding is the simplest and effective way to disseminate a packet to all nodes in a wireless sensor network (WSN). However, basic flooding makes all nodes transmit the packet at least once, resulting in the broadcast storm problem in a serious case, in turn network resources become severely wasted. Particularly, power is one of the most valuable resources of WSNs as nodes are powered by battery, then the waste of energy by the basic flooding lessens the lifetime of WSNs. In order to solve the broadcast storm problem, this paper proposes a dynamic probabilistic flooding that utilizes the neighbor information like the number of child and sibling nodes. Simulation results show that the proposed method achieves a higher packet delivery ratio with the similar number of duplicate packets as compared to existing schemes.

  • Although flooding has the disadvantages like a transmission of duplicated packets and a packet collision, it has been used frequently to find a path between a source and a sink node in a wireless ad hoc network. Clustering is one of the techniques that have been proposed to overcome those disadvantages. In this paper, we propose a new flooding mechanism in ad hoc networks using cluster formation based on the link density which means the number of neighbors within a node's radio reach. To reduce traffic overhead in the cluster is to make the number of non-flooding nodes as large as possible. Therefore, a node with the most links in a cluster will be elected as cluster header. This method will reduce the network traffic overhead with a reliable network performance. Simulation results using NS2 show that cluster formation based on the link density can reduce redundant flooding without loss of network performance.

  • The Vehicle Safety Communications (VSC) is one of VANET applications for preventing vehicle accidents, and it utilizes vehicle-to-vehicle communication to exchange emergency messages. To propagate such messages in VSC, several schemes based on selective flooding have been proposed. Their common idea is that an emergency message is relayed by one of vehicles receiving the message. However, the schemes do not consider the transmission errors and duplications of an emergency event. In the schemes, if there are transmission errors and a vehicle detects a hazard, there may be vehicles which fail to receive an emergency message. If k vehicles detect a hazard, k emergency messages are created and propagated. The duplications of an event increase reliability of the message delivery but decrease efficiency. In this paper, we propose an emergency message delivery scheme which is efficient and robust to transmission errors. Our proposed scheme utilizes clustering for massage aggregation and retransmissions in a cluster. It also uses an acknowledgment mechanism for reliable inter-cluster communication. Our simulation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms Least Common Neighbor Flooding which is one of the selective flooding schemes.

  • With unexpected torrential rainfall, flash flooding is occurring frequently and its impacts are tremendous. Thus proper natural disaster management plans are required. The disaster management system of the Bimodal tram utilizes the SWMM as a core engine to simulate runoff and urban sewer networks for flooding simulation. To develop the efficient Bimodal tram disaster management system, very detailed subcatchment boundaries and flow networks have to be developed in a GIS data format. Thus the objective of this study is to develop ArcView GIS based module (AV2SWMM) for easy preparation of model input for the tram disaster management system. With the AV2SWMM module, very detailed subcatchment boundaries and flow networks can be developed for accurate simulation of flash flooding at the study site, which were not/hardly possible with SWMM 5.0 interface. The AV2SWMM can be used in developing accurate model input for other regions where the Bimodal tram system is expected to be introduced.

  • It should be primarily aimed to increase survivability consisting of susceptibility, vulnerability and recoverability of naval vessels including ship hull, armament system as well as crews from the design stage to practical operations. With this in mind, swift and efficient actions should be executed on the basis of accurate calculations for the recoverability of damaged vessels. In this paper, it is established how the damage control system of naval vessels is embodied through step-by-step processes intending to cope with various damaged situations that may possibly occur during real operations. It is validated that this system has the applicability to naval vessels through the case study of the battle ship which has been damaged during the operation.

  • On July 12, 1993, a large earthquake (M=7.8) occurred off the south-west of Hokkaido, Japan. The tsunami generated by this earthquake caused a disaster which took a heavy toll of lives, more than 200 persons dead, by the flooding of tsunami in the area of Aonae district in Okushiri island. Investigation after the disaster made clear that southern lowland was flooded by the tsunami coming from west about 5 min after the shock and the second tsunami from the east attacked eastern lowland of the Aonae District about 10 min after the shock. • Numerical simulation with Hwang's scheme, which can analyze shallow-water flow over discontinuous topography, was compared with a laboratory experiment of flooding on a perpendicular floodplain with dam-break flows. The simulation results were in good agreement with the results measured in an experimental flume with a reservoir, channel, and floodplain. The wetting and drying process on a perpendicular floodplain with a dam-break flow was particularly well simulated. The difference in simulation results according to the type of flow resistance was insignificant. The results of this study are expected to improve the accuracy of predicting inundation in urban rivers.

  • Mobile ad hoc networks are expected to be widely used in the near future. However, they are susceptible to various security threats because of their inherent characteristics. Malicious flooding attacks are one of the fatal attacks on mobile ad hoc networks. These attacks can severely clog an entire network, as a result of clogging the victim node. If collaborative multiple attacks are conducted, it becomes more difficult to prevent. To defend against these attacks, we propose a novel defense mechanism in mobile ad hoc networks. The proposed scheme enhances the amount of legitimate packet processing at each node. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme also improves the end-to-end packet delivery ratio.

  • Data dissemination using either flooding or legacy ad-hoc routing protocol is not realistic approach in the wireless sensor networks, which are composed of sensor nodes with very weak computing power, small memory and limited battery. In this paper, we propose the ELF(Energy-efficient Localized Flooding) protocol. The ELF is energy-efficient data dissemination protocol for wireless sensor networks. In the ELF protocol, there are two data delivery phases between fixed source and mobile sink node. The first phase, before the tracking zone, sensing data are forwarded by unicasting. After that, within the tracking zone, sensing data are delivered by localized flooding. Namely, the ELF Properly combines advantages from both unicasting and flooding. According to evaluation results by simulation, the proposed ELF protocol maintains very high data delivery ratio with using a little energy. Also, the property of average delay is better than others. From our research results, the ELF is very effective data dissemination protocol for wireless sensor networks.

  • This study proposed the method for the SWMM data generation connected with the spatial database and designed the data model in order to display flooding information such as the runoff sewer system, flooding areas and depth. A variety of data, including UIS, documents related to the disasters, and rainfall data are used to generate the attributes for flooding analysis areas. The spatial data is constructed by the ArcSDE and Oracle DB. The prototype system is also developed to display the runoff areas based on the GIS using the ArcGIS ArcObjects and spatial DB. The results will be applied to the flooding analysis based on the SWMM.
