  • This paper presents how effective the detention storage is to control floods at a test watershed. HEC-HMS model was applied to simulate the effects of the storages of different levels and installation methods on the flood peak reduction. The results showed that the detention storage may significant reduce the flood peaks, and the effectiveness depends on the sizes of the storage and types of installation. The simulated peak values reduce considerably for the design storm events. The results also showed that alternatives to control flood may be evaluated using the model.

  • This study quantified the flood reduction effect of small stormwater detention facilities by the NRCS curve number. The modified rational equation was used to calculate the inflow volume into the detention facilities. The NRCS curve number in the cases w/ and w/o storage facility was calculated with respect to the rainfall characteristics(rainfall frequency, duration) and the size of storage facilities. Finally, diagrams showing the curve number reduction rate versus the size of storage facility were developed. The diagrams can be used to evaluate the flood reduction effect of storage facility reasonably and efficiently when estimating the optimal location and size of storage facility. The results based on the methodology propsed in this study were also compared with those of previous study for their validation.

  • The disposal of stormwater is one of the major problems in urban water management. One method of reducing peak runoff rates and other detrimental impacts of stormwater is detention storage. Detention ponds as a water quality control alternatives have been investigated by a number of researchers. Recognizing multiple roles such as flood peak attenuation, pollution removal and aesthetic enhancement, the design and management of detentions ponds deserve more research. The purpose of this research is to establish design criteria wet detention ponds to improve water quality. Water quality in detention pond discharge might be improve with physical, chemical and biological alterations. Physical alteration was focused in this study. There are several methods for estimating the suspended solid control capability of wet detention ponds. Existing models of suspended solids removal are based on sedimentation and gravity settling theory. The pollutant trap efficiency of pond is a function of several interrelating factors. Detention time is the most important factor, because it determine gravity settling quantities of pollutants. Desirable modification of physical factors for improvement of water quality in wet detention ponds are volume ratio, area ratio, length to width ratio, depth, out let location, bottom soil type. In order to apply design procedure in actual site, Namak new town development area was selected.

  • Detention pond has an important role in peak flow reduction to mitigate flood damage. Design of detention pond is accomplished through the preliminary stage, planning stage, and design stage in general. New development projects produce increased peak flow and flow amounts. In this case it is necessary to design the detention pond easily and simply. The simple procedure of detention pond design is proposed in this study. The relevant variables are peak flow ratio ($\alpha$) for the before and after development, and storage ratio which is ratio of storage volume to flow amounts. Simplified method for the detention pond design with runoff reduction is easily used for practical purposes.

  • This study proposes rainwater infiltration retention blocks as a solution to the flooding problems caused by recent climate change and developed a flood prediction simulation program to select the optimal site for installing rainwater infiltration retention blocks that can minimize damage from floods. By applying the existing 2D flood analysis model G2D and adding a reservoir function, the volume of water before and after installation can be determined through simulation results.

  • Rapid changes of urban hydrologic events need new management operation rule of detention reservoir which is essential outflow control system in urban area. Therefore, this study is to develop the outflow management method of Seoul city considering the Han river flood characteristics, to analyze the inundation of detention reservoir according to variation of design storm patterns, and to examine the safety of gate due to design flood water level. From this study, new operation rule is presented. The design storm patterns are determined by instantaneous intensity method and Huff's quartile method. And the inflow hydrograph of detention reservoir is obtained by applying ILLUDAS model and RRL method. The operation rule of existing drainage pump is designed to have linear relation between storage and pumping discharge. But in this study, it is effective for preventing inundation when the operation rule of drainage pump have Gaussian function which is combined the storage of detention reservoir with its inflow according to increasing or decreasing of inflow hydrograph.

  • The ability to defend against floods in urban areas was weakened, because the increase in the impervious rate of urban areas due to urbanization and industrialization and the increase in the localized torrential rainfall due to abnormal climate. In order to reduce flood damage in urban areas, various runoff reduction facilities such as detention ponds and infiltration facilities were installed. However, in the case of domestic metropolitan cities, it is difficult to secure land for the installation of storm water reduction facilities and secure the budget for improving the aged pipelines. Therefore, it is necessary to design a storage system (called the detention pond in trunk sewer) that linked the existing drainage system to improve the flood control capacity of the urban area and reduce the budget. In this study, to analyze the effect of reducing runoff amounts according to the volume of the detention pond in trunk sewer, three kinds of virtual watershed (longitudinal, middle, concentration shape) were assumed and the detention pond in trunk sewer was installed at an arbitrary location in the watershed. The volume of the detention pond in trunk sewer was set to 6 cases ($1,000m^3$, $3,000m^3$, $5,000m^3$, $10,000m^3$, $20,000m^3$, $30,000m^3$), and the installation location of the detention pond in trunk sewer was varied to 20%, 40%, 60%, and 80% of the detention pond upstream area to the total watershed area (DUAR). Also, using the results of this study, a graph of the relationship and relational equation between the volume of the detention pond in trunk sewer and the installation location is presented.

  • Accurate quantitative assessment of flood control effect of side-weir detention basin as a flood countermeasure was highly required, in which one-dimensional HEC-RAS model has been widely utilized in practice. When the submerged overflow occurred particularly driven by limited storage capacity of a given detention basin, HEC-RAS model could not be sufficiently applicable by guaranteeing acceptable accuracy without reliable benchmark dataset. From this perspective, a dedicated unsteady experiment was planned and carried out to physically realize such submerged overflow for accommodating better accuracy. Subsequently, the experimental results were applied to validate and calibrate HEC-RAS unsteady modeling to provide flood control effect of the detention basin for various inflow scenarios. After following this procedure, the modelled results indicated that there appeared within -5% of difference in stage height and maximum 2.4% accuracy to assess the flood control effect, thereby ensuring the calibrated HEC-RAS unsteady model to be accurate with practically acceptable error range.

  • In this study, a numerical analysis was conducted using a two-dimensional diffusion-wave analysis model to analyze the validity about the application of eco-friendly prefabricated rainwater detention system in grit chamber and permanent pond. As a result of the analysis, it is confirmed that the flood prevention effect, such as a decrease in peak flow rate and a delay in peak time, is excellent, so it is considered reasonable to apply eco-friendly prefabricated rainwater detention system in grit chamber and permanent pond.

  • To solve the urban flood problems, it must get the enough channel conveyances and pumping capacities. It needs set up the detention system to control the flow over the channel capacity. Inspite of this detention system, the peak flow may increased by rainfall distribution and the delay of flow. This shows a design model of detention system which can consider the time problems from mutual connections of the detention storages and pumping flow using IDP(Incremental Dynamic Programming) method.
