  • This study examined the effectiveness of ultrasound on enhancing the dewaterability and volume reduction of bio solids from a waste treatment plant. The test specimen was obtained from a storage tank immediately before the dewatering process at a local treatment plant. The test conditions included the energy levels of ultrasonic waves and treatment time. The tests were undertaken using three types of different treatment processors (7 liter, 1 ton, 7 ton container). The capillary suction time (CST) and the viscosity of sludge, which is one of the influencing factors for dewaterbility, were obtained under various test conditions. The results showed that ultrasound increases the CST of the raw specimens, whereas a significant reduction (20 % of the maximum value) of CST occurred in the sample with ultrasound and flocculent. The decrease in viscosity reached 40 % of the maximum value. A centrifugal test was performed to examine the characteristics of the sludge settlement. The settling rate and time required to reach the final values were both enhanced by the ultrasonic energy. An ultrasonic treatment is potentially useful tool for reducing the amount of released sludge. To examine the possible use of field application, the real scale sonic processor was designed and operated. The results were similar (50 % of the maximum value) to those of laboratory experiments.

  • This study was conducted to investigate removal characteristics for Synedra sp. and filter run time (FRT) according to the cell length in the Nakdong River. When used alone flocculent, the removal efficiency for Synedra tenera (around $100{\mu}m$) was constant with 90.9~94.4%, while Synedra acus (around $300{\mu}m$) had the lower removal efficiency as 60~70%. $PACS_2$ and PAC showed 5~6% higher removal for S. acus than others (HiB and LAS). When added coagulant aid, loess had no effect and also needed more amount of flocculent. Sodium Silicate increased the removal rate by max 10.6%. On the other hand, 2.5 mg/L of Polyamine showed 96.9% removal efficiency for S. acus increasing up to 25% more than $PACS_2$ alone. In the effect of water temperature, the removal for S. acus at $15^{\circ}C$ were 6% higher than at $4^{\circ}C$. There was no significant correlation between the removal efficiencys of turbidity and S. acus. The results of this study was similar to the actual water treatment process's removal characteristics for Synedra sp. depending on the cell length and temperature. In the actual process, the numbers of Synedra in settled water was established natural logarithm function with the filter run time (FRT), so we can predict FRT as Synedra numbers.

  • Because paper industry spends lots amount of water, the recycling of water is very important in economical as well as environmental aspects. In order to optimize the process water recycling system, the efficiency of unit operation for water circulation, such as save-all system, CDS and settling tank, plays an important role in. In this study, the sedimentation efficiency of process water was evaluated by SS measurement with the different amounts of flocculent addition. 3 different kinds of process water were collected from fine paper mill, and applied in laboratory sedimentation equipment for the measurement of settling efficiency of SS materials. The addition amounts of alum and PAC were resulted in optimum efficiency of sediments in the condition of 100 ppm of alum and 500 ppm of PAC respectively. In the comparison of sedimentation efficiency between alum and PAC, alum showed more economical and efficient results. The SS of spill water and the particle size of suspended materials treated by alum flocculents were below 50 ppm and about 1 $\mu$m. It would be considered that the spill water can be substituted to superclear water grade.

  • Primary neoplasms of the ribs and sternum are rare. Most primary bony chest wall neoplasms are malignant, and chondrosarcoma is the most common malignancy in this location The etiology of chondrosarcoma is unknown. Definitive diagnosis of chondrosarcoma can only be made pathologically. The natural history of chest wall chondrosarcoma is one of slow growth and local recurrence. Most tumors of the sternum require wide resection and reconstruction procedures, with potentially serious postoperative problems. Advances in chest wall reconstruction primarily through refinement in muscle transposition and clarification of the functional anatomy and blood supply of trunk muscles, has resulted in a more aggressive resection of the these tumors . Recently we experienced a case with chondrosarcoma of the sternum. A 56 year-old man was admitted to our hospital due to painless, slowly enlarging mass at the left sternoclavicular junctional area. The chest radiograph strongly suggested an underlying cartilaginous neoplasm owing to the appearance of typical flocculent and curvilinear calcifications within the lesion. On CT of the chest, the tumor exhibited a scalloped or lobulated contour, hypodensity of the nonmineralized component in comparison to adjacent muscle, and characteristic stippled cartilaginous matrix mineralization, also typical for cartilaginous neoplasm. The patient underwent wide resection of the chest wall tumor include with a 2-3cm margin of normal tissue on all sides and the thoracic skeletal defect was reconstructed with polytetrafluoroethylene [Gore-Tex] soft-tissue patch. Soft tissue reconstructive procedure was done with the pectoralis major muscle transposition. The patient had an uneventful postoperative course and discharged without adjuvant treatment such as radiation and chemotherapy.

  • We analyze the dependence of disk morphology (arm class, Hubble type, bar type) of nearby spiral galaxies on the galaxy environment by using local background density (${\Sigma}_n$), projected distance ($r_p$), and tidal index (T I) as measures of the environment. There is a strong dependence of arm class and Hubble type on the galaxy environment, while the bar type exhibits a weak dependence with a high frequency of SB galaxies in high density regions. Grand design fractions and early-type fractions increase with increasing ${\Sigma}_n$, $1/r_p$, and T I, while fractions of flocculent spirals and late-type spirals decrease. Multiple-arm and intermediate-type spirals exhibit nearly constant fractions with weak trends similar to grand design and early-type spirals. While bar types show only a marginal dependence on ${\Sigma}_n$, they show a fairly clear dependence on $r_p$ with a high frequency of SB galaxies at small $r_p$. The arm class also exhibits a stronger correlation with $r_p$ than ${\Sigma}_n$ and T I, whereas the Hubble type exhibits similar correlations with ${\Sigma}_n$ and $r_p$. This suggests that the arm class is mostly affected by the nearest neighbor while the Hubble type is affected by the local densities contributed by neighboring galaxies as well as the nearest neighbor.

  • Six types of hemocytes were identified in adult grasshopper, Euprepocnemis shirakii Bolivar. The morphological and ultrastructural characteristics of these cells were characterized by phase contrast, scanning and transmission electron microscope. The prohemocytes are small and spherical cells with large nucleus. The plasmatocytes are spindle shaped or polymorphic cells which show numerous cytoplasmic processes on the cell surface and they have lysosomes and vesicles that may be involved in phagocytic function. Especially, multivesicular bodies are observed in the polymorphic cells. The granulocytes I are spherical shaped cells. They are characterized by a number of electron dense granules measuring $0.2-0.3{\mu}m$ in average diameter and marginal band of microtubules which are always in close proximity to the cell membrane. The granulocytes II are oval or spindle-shaped cells. They contain large electron dense granules measuring $0.5-0.8{\mu}m$ in average diameter. Their cytoplasm is filled with numerous granules. The spherulocytes contain large amounts of spherules that most of their cytoplasm. Spherules filled with fine granules or flocculent materials. The oenocytoids are large spherical cells with few cytoplasmic organelles. Their cytoplasm contains peculiar aspect of motochondria and numerous polyrobosome.

  • In order to induce the rapid alcohol fermentation through the increases of the cell density in a continuous alcohol fermentation of naked barley, the single-cultivation with S. cerevisiae IS-019(SCM, ordinary control), mixed-cultivation with Saccharomyces uvarum IS-026 having a flocculent ability and S. cerevisiae IS-019(MCM), and mash recirculation by single-cultivation of S. cerevisiae IS-019(MRM) modes were investigated. The cell mass in the mixed-cultivation mode was about 10% higher than that of ordinary control but the final alcohol yield was slightlyl decreased. When recycled the mash with the flow rate of 7 l/h from V$_{6}$ to V$_{5}$ fermentors under the ordinary control, the cell density was distributed at 140~170$\times $10$^{6}$ cell/ml depending upon the fermentorsorders, higher about 20% than that of the ordinary control. Under these conditions the alcohol productivity of the maximum and the overall was 12.16 g/l$\cdot $h with an alcohol of 7.6% at the V$_{5}$ fermentor and 1.19 g/l$\cdot $h with an alcohol of 8.94%, respectively. For higher cell mass it was more effective to apply the mash recirculation mode with the single-cultivation of S. cerevisiae IS-019 in a pilot scale multi-stage CSTR.

  • Makgeolli is a traditional cloudy-white Korean rice wine with an alcohol content of 6~7%. The present study investigated the morphological characteristics, carbon-utilizing ability, fatty acid composition, alcohol resistance, glucose tolerance, and flocculence of Saccharomyces cerevisiae Y98-5 and Pichia anomala Y197-13, non-S. cerevisiae isolated from Nuruk, which is used in brewing Makgeolli. Similar morphological characteristics were observed for both isolated wild yeast strains; and the carbon source assimilation of Y197-13 differed from that of other P. anomala strains. Strain Y197-13 was negative for D-trehalose, mannitol, arbutin, I-erythritol, and succinic acid. The major cellular fatty acids of strain Y197-13 included C18:2n6c (33.94%), C18:1n9c (26.97%) and C16:0 (20.57%). Strain Y197-13 was Crabtree-negative, with 60% cell viability at 12% (v/v) ethanol. The flocculation level of strain Y197-13 was 8.38%, resulting in its classification as a non-flocculent yeast.

  • Constraining the structure and thus the fate of giant molecular clouds (GMCs), the primary sites of star formation in galaxies, is crucial to understand the evolution of galaxies themselves. Exploiting the unprecedented sensitivity and angular resolution of the Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA), we have measured the spatially-resolved (~ 20 pc resolution) properties of the GMCs in two nearby late-type galaxies, NGC 5806 (SAB(s)b) and NGC 6753 ((R)SA(r)b), as part of the WISDOM project. Although these results are preliminary, we identified ~ 200 resolved GMCs in NGC 5806 within a radius of 500 pc, most within a nuclear ring structure, and ~ 400 resolved GMCs in NGC 6753 within a radius of 2 kpc, most within a flocculent spiral structure. The GMCs of NGC 5806 have similar sizes but slightly higher linewidths than clouds in the Milky Way disc. Because the GMCs also have higher surface densities, the calculated cloud Virial parameters are nevertheless about unity, suggesting that the GMCs of NGC 5806 are in gravitational equilibrium and thus long lived. This is contrary to other WISDOM results on earlier-type galaxies, where large cloud linewidths are likely due to shear associated with the local (circular) orbital motions (rather than the clouds' self-gravity), and the clouds are either marginally or not gravitationally bound. These results support the notion that spheroids alter the dynamical states of clouds (morphological quenching), that are otherwise (i.e. in galaxy discs) fairly homogenous and similar to those of the Milky Way.
