  • A semi-analytical numerical approach for the effective structural dynamic response analysis of spar floating substructure for offshore wind turbine subject to wave-induced excitation is introduced in this paper. The wave-induced rigid body motions at the center of mass are analytically solved using the dynamic equations of rigid ship motion. After that, the flexible structural dynamic responses of spar floating substructure for offshore wind turbine are numerically analyzed by letting the analytically derived rigid body motions be the external dynamic loading. Restricted to one-dimensional sinusoidal wave excitation at sea state 3, pitch and heave motions are considered. Through the numerical experiments, the time responses of heave and pitch motions are solved and the wave-induced dynamic displacement and effective stress of flexible floating substructure are investigated. The hydrodynamic interaction between wave and structure is modeled by means of added mass and wave damping, and its modeling accuracy is verified from the comparison of natural frequencies obtained by experiment with a 1/100 scale model.

  • Recently, a number of wind turbines are being installed due to the increase of interest in renewable, environment-friendly energy. Especially, an offshore wind turbine is being watched with keen interest in that it has no difficulty in securing a site and can get high quality of wind, as compared with a wind turbine on land. The offshore wind turbine is transferred to and installed on the site by an offshore floating crane after it was made in a factory on land such as shipyard. At this time, it is important to secure the safety of the turbine because of its huge size and expensive cost. Thus, a dynamic analysis of the offshore wind turbine which is connedted with the offshore floating crane was performed based on the multibody systems dynamics in this study. As a result. it is shown that the analysis can be applied to verify the safety of a method for the transportation and installation of the offshore wind turbine suspended by the crane.

  • Floating offshore wind turbines (FOWTs) have been developed to overcome large water depths and leverage the abundant wind resource in deep seas. However, wind-wave misalignment can occur depending on the weather conditions, and most megawatt (MW)-class turbines are horizontal-axis wind turbines subjected to yaw errors. Therefore, the power performance and dynamic response of super-large FOWTs exposed simultaneously to these external conditions must be analyzed. In this study, several scenarios combining wind-wave misalignment and yaw error were considered. The IEA 15 MW reference FOWT (v1.1.2) and OpenFAST (v3.4.1) were used to perform numerical simulations. The results show that the power performance was affected more significantly by the yaw error; therefore, the generator power reduction and variability increased significantly. However, the dynamic response was affected more significantly by the wind-wave misalignment increased; thus, the change in the platform 6-DOF and tower loads (top and base) increased significantly. These results can be facilitate improvements to the power performance and structural integrity of FOWTs during the design process.

  • This paper presents the concept design procedure of a floating-type combined renewable energy platform based on hydrodynamic analyses and is focused on the fatigue design of taut-type mooring lines of the platform. Two types of combined renewable energy platforms are considered: a combination of wind turbine, wave turbine and photovoltaic energy plant and a combination of wind turbine, current turbine and photovoltaic energy plant. The basic configurations are conceptually determined from the understanding of floating offshore plants, while the main dimensions have been determined based on a hydrostatic calculation. Fully coupled hydrodynamic analyses have been carried out to identify the motion characteristics of the floating body and the tension histories of the mooring lines. The tension history is used for the fatigue life prediction based on the rain-flow cycle counting method. For the fatigue life prediction, tension life curves from API and the Palmgren-Miner rule are employed.

  • Increasing numbers of floating offshore wind turbines are planned and designed these days due to their high potential in massive generation of clean energy from water depth deeper than 50 m. In the present study, a numerical prediction tool has been developed for the fully-coupled dynamic analysis of FOWTs in time domain including aero-blade-tower dynamics and control, mooring dynamics, and platform motions. In particular, the focus of the present study is paid to the dynamic coupling between the rotor and floater and the coupled case is compared against the uncoupled case so that their dynamic coupling effects can be identified. For this purpose, a mono-column mini TLP with 1.5MW turbine for 80m water depth is selected as an example. The time histories and spectra of the FOWT motions and accelerations as well as tether top-tensions are presented for the given collinear wind-wave condition. When compared with the uncoupled analysis, both standard deviations and maximum values of the floater-responses/tower-accelerations and tether tensions are appreciably increased as a result of the rotor-floater dynamic coupling, which may influence the overall design including fatigue-life estimation especially when larger blades are to be used.

  • A floating green hydrogen production platform is considered a suitable facility for the hydrogen supply chain in the future. In this study, we analyzed the dynamic behavior of a floating green hydrogen production platform according to changes in the outer diameter of the connecting power cable. The platform consists of a floater that generates hydrogen and an offshore wind turbine, and a connection power cable is attached to the floater to supply the electric power produced by the offshore wind turbine. In this study, it was found that variations of the outer diameter of the connection power cable had a minor effect on the dynamic behavior on the floater, and the larger the outer diameter of the connecting power cable, the greater the effective tension. As a result, it was found that the outer diameter of the cable was not a major variable in the entire production system design.

  • The floating offshore wind turbines are usually exposed to the wave and wind excitations which are irregular and undirected. In this paper, the sloshing characteristics of annular cylindrical tank were experimentally investigated to reduce the structural dynamic motion of floating offshore wind turbine which is robust to the irregular change of excitation direction of wind and wave. The formula for the natural sloshing frequencies of this annular cylindrical tank was derived theoretically. In order to validate this formula, the shaking equipment was established and frequency response functions were measured. Two types of tank were considered. The first and second natural sloshing frequencies were investigated according to the depth of the water. It has been observed that between theoretical and experimental results shows a good agreement.

  • In order to install the floating transport type wind-turbine foundation, water pumping is used to sink the foundation. During this process, its mass and center of gravity, and buoyancy center become continuously changed so that the dynamic stability of the floating foundation become unstable. Dynamic stability analysis of the floating foundation is a complex problem since it should take into account not only the environmental wave, wind, and current loads but also its weight change effect simultaneously considering six-degree-of-freedom motion. In this study, advanced numerical method based on the coupled computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and multi-body dynamics (MBD) approach has been applied to the dynamic stability analysis of the floating foundation. The sloshing effect of foundation internal water is also considered and the floating dynamic characteristics are numerically investigated in detail.

  • In this study, we perform the structural analysis of a floating offshore wind turbine tower by considering the dynamic response of the floating platform. A multibody system consisting of three blades, a hub, a nacelle, the platform, and the tower is used to model the floating wind turbine. The blades and the tower are modeled as flexible bodies using three-dimensional beam elements. The aerodynamic force on the blades is calculated by the Blade Element Momentum (BEM) theory with hub rotation. The hydrostatic, hydrodynamic, and mooring forces are considered for the platform. The structural dynamic responses of the tower are simulated by numerically solving the equations of motion. From the simulation results, the time history of the internal forces at the nodes, such as the bending moment and stress, are obtained. In conclusion, the internal forces are compared with those obtained from static analysis to assess the effects of wave loads on the structural stability of the tower.
