  • In this paper a model following flight control system design using the discrete time quasi-sliding mode control method is described. The quasi-sliding mode is represented as the sliding mode band, not as the sliding surface. The quasi-sliding mode control is composed of the equivalent control for the nominal system without uncertainties and disturbances and the additive control compensating the uncertainties and disturbances. The linearized plant on the equilibrium point is used in designing a flight control system and the stability conditions are proposed for the model uncertainties. Pseudo-state feedback control which uses the model variables for the unmeasured states is proposed. The proposed method is applied to the design of the roll attitude and pitch load factor control of a bank-to-turn missile. The performance is verified through the nonlinear six degrees of freedom flight simulation.

  • In this paper, we propose an adaptive neural dynamic surface control (DSC) approach with $H_{\infty}$ tracking performance for full dynamics of nonlinear flight systems. It is assumed that the model uncertainties such as structured and unstrutured uncertainties, and external disturbances influence the nonlinear aircraft model. In our control system, self recurrent wavelet neural networks (SRWNNs) are used to compensate the model uncertainties of nonlinear flight systems, and an adaptive DSC technique is extended for the disturbance attenuation of nonlinear flight systems. All weights of SRWNNs are trained on-line by the smooth projection algorithm. From Lyapunov stability theorem, it is shown that $H_{\infty}$ performance nom external disturbances can be obtained. Finally, we present the simulation results for a nonlinear six-degree-of-freedom F-16 aircraft model to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed control system.

  • In this study, to propose the prediction method of the crack growth under flight-simulation loading, crack growth tests are conducted on 2124-7851 aluminum alloy specimens. The prediction of crack growth under flight-simulation loading is performed by the stochastic crack growth model which was developed in previous study. First of all, to reduce the complex load history into a number of constant amplitude events, rainflow counting is applied to the flight-simulation loading wave. The crack growth, then, is predicted by the stochastic crack growth model that can describe the load interaction effect as well as the variability in crack growth process. The material constants required in this model are obtained from crack growth tests under constant amplitude loading and single tensile overload. The curves predicted by the proposed model well describe the crack growth behavior under flight-simulation loading and agree with experimental data. In addition, this model well predicts the variability of fatigue lives.

  • For an access to specified helicopter simulator qualification's level C or FTD(Flight Training Device) level 5 of FAA(Federal Aviation Administration) AC(Advisory Circular) 120-63, the mathematical model of a single rotor helicopter flight dynamics is investigated. From the rotorcraft simulation model validated by evaluation of its flight performance, the feasibility of the flight dynamic model that is selected for its effectiveness has been proved. Thereby the simulation environment for evaluation of helicopter flying quality is established with the development of FTD for training and testing the flight performance.

  • Cosmic radiation exposure of the flight crews in Korea has been managed by Radiation Safety Management around Living Life Act under Nuclear Safety and Security Commission. However, the domestic flight crews are excluded from the Act because of relatively low route dose exposure compared to that of international flight crews. But we found that the accumulated total annual dose of domestic flight crews is far from negligible because of relatively long total flight time and too many flights. In this study, to suggest the necessity of management of domestic flight crews' radiation exposure, we statistically analyzed domestic flight crew's accumulative annual dose by using cosmic radiation estimation models of the Civil Aviation Research Institute (CARI)-6M, Nowcast of Atmospheric Ionizing Radiation for Aviation Safety (NAIRAS), and Korean Radiation Exposure Assessment Model (KREAM) and compared with in-situ measurements of Liulin-6K LET spectrometer. As a result, the average exposure dose of domestic flight crews was found to be 0.5-0.8 mSv. We also expect that our result might provide the basis to include the domestic flight crews as radiation workers, not just international flight attendants.

  • This paper shows the design of operational flight program(OFP) using model-based design(MBD) method which is used in various engineering fields to reduce time and flight risks for development. The verification of OFP for DO-178C guidelines carry out by a model advisor function of simulink. The flight control logic on simulink is converted into C-language by auto code generation tool from, then it is implemented on 32bit digital signal processor(DSP). The verifications of flight control algorithm on various weather conditions are performed by the HILS system with Flight simulator program, X-plane.

  • Tilt rotor aircraft can take off and land vertically and cruise faster than any other helicopter. A scaled flight demonstration model of a tilt rotor aircraft has been developed by KARI. Because the flight characteristics of tilt rotor are not well known, the developed scaled model would be helpful to evaluate flight control algorithm of a full scale aircraft. The tethered hover test has been performed in order to improve hover flight characteristics of tilt rotor aircraft prior to flight test of the small scaled model. During the tethered hover test, the performance of rotor speed governor, rate SAS (Stability Augmentation System) and control surface mixers have been evaluated. We expect that the results of real flight hover test would be quite same as tethered hover test. Therefore the tethered hover test results will reduce the risk of flight test properly by fixing some of hidden problems which might occur during the flight test. This paper presents the results of tethered hover test in detail and shows how it could be final ground test before flight test. The control mixer gain and rate SAS feedback gains were modified in order to get higher controllability and stability during the tethered hover flight. The rotor governor showed that it could keep rotor RPM constant with very small deviation even during severe pilot collective input change. The tethered hover test results gave pilot and engineers confirmation and experience about the scheduled flight test.

  • Airborne separation assurance is a key requirement for Free Flight Airspace operations, This paper study the feasibility of airborne separation assurance for free flight Airspaces operations by evaluating the efficiency measurement models. Three qualitatively different methods are utilized; one based Ground and Air conflict probability model, other based Dynamic Density model. the other based Direct operating cost model. The evaluation is Direct Operating Cost model and Two metrics are utilized for the efficiency measurements; airborne separation assurance performed quite well in the Free Flight evaluation; (1) 2 scenario of the conflict situations are resolved; (2) The MD-80 flight peformed separation assurance and efficiency, Not only appling for geometric method algorithm is more efficiently than potential method, but also the most efficiently geometric combined method.

  • Generally, air freight forecasting model used to major factor GNP(GDP), Yield, Exchange rate, as its independent variables. We studied about the factors that affect to Air Freight in Korea, and we found six affective variables. Those are GNP, Exchange rate, Flight routes, Flight numbers, Sum of dollars Export and import. To find the relationship between the Air Freight and GNP, Exchange rate, Flight routes, Flight numbers, Sum of dollars Export and import we used regression analysis. Through the regression analysis, we found some problems in the model. There are collieneraities between the variables, so we took the variables selection model to choose the best affective variables of air cargo. We have defined the the Korean air freight forecasting model with two variables and forecast far the $1996{\sim}2010$ period were made by using this model.
